Giovanna Fessia of Turin, Italy, became our first American Field Ser v ic e Exchange Student. After a long journey by train, boat, and bus, she arrived at the home of har foster parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester Kubalak, in September of 1958. The National Honor Society, in conjunction with the school board, the localAmerican Field Service Committee, and student body sponsored this program. An assembly welcoming her was held before l400 stu- dents and faculty in the high school gymnasium. In addition, a dance was held in her honor. In June the entire student body bade farewell to this wonderful Italian girl who lived among them and displayed excellent academic and social qualities. Fund-raising projects were hold in order to provide the necessary contributions to support this program. The S650 needed was raised through a dance, a spaghetti dinner, and some contributions from local businessmen with a donation from the school board. Mr. and Mrs. Kubalak are sincerely thanked for their generousity. They gave of their time, effort, and love in order that Giovanna might have a home away from home. We hope Giovanna and succeeding exchange students will carry back lasting memories of Fitzgerald High School, its students, faculty, and community.
