w e Came We Learned We Conquered We came as sheep lost from the fold — We came as wanderers unknown — e came not knowing why we came. Like many orphans left alone, W e banded others to our lot And strove to conquer the great storm. We battled knowledge many days, Then licked our wounds and cuts in stride And lost the skirmish of revolt. We joined another regiment And banished Colonel Ignorance From all our thoughts and all our plans. A mighty army we arose — The weak were slaughtered in the war — The injured battled for their lives. Defeat, the traitor, fled the scene — Lord Knowledge led our famous corps Through volumes garnished with great depth. Our wisdom grew as days fled by Afraid to challenge armies great Till came the dawn of knowledge true. The battles of our younger days Had left few scars to mark our past As higher ranks were handed us. We came, we learned, we conquered all — We fought the battle to the last And won the right to join the world. But in the future of this world, Sir Ignorance will come again To challenge us in battles great; But with Lord Knowledge on our side, Again we ' ll fight this deadly sin And in the end will win. by Shari Lee Whipple ' 64 FOREWORD

President James J. Hammond Captured on these pages of memory and memorabilia are impressions and likenesses, facts and fancies of the college as you have known it. Herein is recorded and preserved views, feelings, impressions — a different set for each of you — formed out of personal identification and experience. So depicted are buildings and places forever reminiscent of situations and associations; the faculty, those timeless Olym- pians who served you and your purposes in varying measures, roles and capacities; the organizations with which you were identified and to which you pledged lasting loyalty; the students with whom you shared dreams, ideals and escapades. Such is your Saxifrage. Time will tell whether it will be simply a record of your undergrad- uate days, a reference in times of nostalgia, the end of a chapter or the end of the book. It is for each of you a lasting contact with all your classmates. Let not your graduation be an ending but along with other alumni, through continued association with your college in personal, social and professional en- deavor, help to write additional memorable chapters in the history of the State College at Fitchburg.
