SPUNK The Fitchburg State College soc- cer team clinched the New Eng- land State College Athletic Con- ference championship by squeez- ing out a thrilling 2 to 1 win over the visiting Plymouth State College (N. H.) booters before 250 specta- tors at Coolidge Park. The triumph gave Coach Gene Cassassa ' s combine a perfect 8-0 slate for NESCAC competition this fall, and a 9-1-1 record overall. The only loss tasted by the Falcons came in their opening contest, when they dropped a 3-1 decision to New Bedford Tech. The tie was against the Alumj clubs netted thre With the regu:.a P n finished .tho HBC bootcr ; anxiously Na- Co-Captain Dick Threlfall was the hero of the crucial game. The four-year veteran who holds down a fullback position, delivered spectacular maneuver to score the tie-breaking goal with only about a minute and a half remaining to be played. Threlfall raced up from his deep position to head wingman i Jeff Peters ' corner kick past the j bewildered Plymouth goalie. The New Hampshire team scored I first, drilling a shot by Freddy Sul- livan, FSC goalie, early in the sec- ond half. Mid-way through the | third period, Jim Babineau, center forward, evened the count when he : booted Co-Captain Dick Berger ' s i cross pass into the nets from up close. Due to the brilliant defen- sive play of the entire team, the score remained deadlocked until Threlfall ' s heady shot. The victory was particularly I sweet to Coach Cassassa and his ' boys, since they were deprived of an unbeaten league record last year in their final game by the Keene State College team. Following the game, a victory parade took place down Main street. In the evening, a dance was held at the college at which time a victory cake was presented to Coach Cassassa. . and SUCCESS L.
