FIRE! I George Baho checks the depth of the water on the 4th floor. It happens when you least expect it. You'll be sitting in class for 20 minutes, then DING DING DING, another fire drill! Everyone slowly rises, some grinning at the thought of breaking out of class for ten minutes, others griping at the thought of breaking out of class for ten minutes, other griping about having to go outside into the cold weather. The students slowly trudge down the halls, leaving through whichever exit they see their friends go out. Outside we all stand huddled together in the streets, talking about the test you were taking, yelling to your friends, sneaking a cigarette, or just trying to keep warm as you stand defenseless in the t George Baho brings in the speedry I machine. — ■ The task begins, on removing all ' the water. January wind. The teachers yell to get on the sidewalks, and you grumble about the cold, wondering when you can go back into the build- ing. You take your sweet time, stopping at your locker and walking down the second floor three times before you go back up to History class. No one ever takes a fire drill seriously. Ever since first grade, we've been drilled, listened to lectures, and watched films about fires. Yet we always regard fire drills as a nuisance or an excuse to get out of class. But the fire alarms have served their purposes in the past few years, such as when the sprinklers went off in the kitchen in '83, or the bomb scare in '86, and the most current sprinkler scare this year, when the fourth floor, for some mysterious reason, decided it wanted to get wet, send- ing the entire school to the cafe and gym. Even though fire drills usually result in 10 minutes of standing in the fresh outdoors, let's just re- member that they're for our safety. student Life 19
