Boulder to participate in the Hunter Publishing Co. Yearbook seminar, an annual gathering to teach students all about yearbooks and what goes into making one good. The plan of the morning consisted of everyone meeting at McDonald's around 8:00 am. Mr. Stephen V. LeBlanc, known to most as Shifty, was picking up four people and Wayne Sprague picked up three more, however, Wayne's crew was late for the simple reason of a missing basketball. After we all had our morning munchies with coffee, the group was finally waking up. We discovered that we had forgotten our pillows but it didn't matter because the trunks couldn't have held one more thing. We set out for the Mass Pike listening to a tape of Alice's Restaurant and WAAF. After riding for sixty-miles it was time for a pit stop at Hojo's on the Pike. Another half-hour soon passed and

we found ourselves pulling into the Westfield State parking lot. The enthusiasm glowed in our faces as we entered Scanlon Hall, where we quickly made friends with some kids from Reading High School. Everyone received their room assignments and keys and went to check out the rooms. After unpacking Mr. LeBlanc had each one select different courses to take during the next three days. Some of the courses included The nuts and bolts of a yearbook , Advertising and The Classic Column. Mickey McCay, a graphic designer from the Yearbook Company, sketched people's ideas for themes. Actually one of our original theme ideas was based on the Trivial Pursuit game. After thinking this over we canned the idea in favor of a more original theme: Rock Solid. This theme was discovered by Marie McDonald, Kim Beaulac and Shelley Robertson, who had attended a class on picking themes, by Claudine Bennet. It isn't very easy to create a theme, especially since Fitchburg has so many interesting topics to choose from. At the end of the night each school combined their winnings and participated in an auction for prizes. The last day arrived to quickly for most of us. Saying farewell to new friends, we exchanged addresses. The trip back home seemed to take forever, but in those few days we learned a lot about ourselves and each other and we left Westfield State College as a close-knit group. You could say that we became ROCK SOLID. (Top) Tom Catalini shown with good friend Allison Singhel as Betsy Rosenthal takes a picture.
