(Left) Ron Cordio It's not as easy as it looks, is it? (Below) Wayne Spraque tries to paint but Tim Stansel's clowning around makes it hard. (Left) Diane Garcia and Jimmy Digeronimo Look out here comes Heidi Huckaby! (Above) Dan Dino Miller knows all the right tools to have for painting the rock. Painting the Rock is a momentous occasion in the life of an F.H.S. student. Every year, on the Friday after the seniors graduate, the next class gathers at the Rock, one of the highest points (in more ways than one) to leave their mark on the city. If you think about it. the location of the Rock is symbolic of the painters' new status at the school. The rock is among the highest spots in Fitchburg, its painters are among the highest in the school — Seniors! Fortunately. June 6. 1985 brought us perfect weather. By 3:00 p.m. almost 100 people had gathered at the Rock, relaxing, and waiting for the paint to arrive. But before the paint arrived, the police did. After a It's good to be alive! Tim Stansel short visit, they departed, and the paint showed up, soon after. At first, progress was slow. The limited number of brushes and rollers, the lack of experience, and shortened tempers all combined to form a less than enthusiastic crowd, but once everyone had a hand print or a slogan decorating his or her clothing, things went a lot more smoothly. Despite a few spills, slips, and skids, no one was badly injured. Tim Stansel, however decided to try his hand at paint skiing. Luckily, he managed to stay on his feet all the way down the rock. Asked about the incident, Tim's only comment was It's good to be alive! Another daredevil, Dean Miller, was able to hold a roller, a can, and the rope, all at the same time, while continuing to paint 86 . Only too quickly, the task was finished. Now officially seniors, the painters posed for group pictures, grinning uncontrollably and looking like survivors of a paint factory's explosion. On the way home, one senior was reported to have glanced up at the Rock from the end of Main Street, and sighed. Wow! We're really Seniors now. That's us. Yes, it is! Student Life 7
