Money Makes the World Go Round At one time or another during High School we all serve time. Some of us are up for 6 to 1 0 at Market Basket Maximum Security, others of us will fry in the Mc- Donald State Pen, but most of us, no mat- ter where we do it, we'll work sometime while at F.H.S. The part time jobs available to students aren't usually the most qiamarous posi- tions in the world. Let's face it, pumping gas, stocking shelves, sweeping movie theatres, sacking groceries, and Happy Meal Engineering aren't exactly jobs that lead to a Nobel Prize. So what makes us 6 fill out piles of applications just to get into the backroom of a place that reeks of fish to wash dishes? $ $ $ $ If someone hadn't already said money makes the world go around , we'd all know it by the end of Freshman year any- way. It was then that they merged into one powerful mass to lead and become role models as upper- classmen. The festivities opened with the watermelon eating contest, an event that took quick moving chops and a fast diges- tive system. Soon the watermelon contestants could wash up with a quick splash from a water balloon. Laundry baskets full of heavy, colorful balloons were ammunition for many eager Seniors ready to start a high spirited war. Within minutes the ammunition was de- pleted, and a more competitive event commenced: the three-legged race. En- thusiastic Seniors bounced, flopped, and staggered to the finish line, all except Joe Kreidler and Sue Lapointe who led the race throughout and won with magnificent style. Slowly, the atmosphere became more intense when the egg throwing contest began. You could see the concentration in the Senior's faces as the eggs mercifully landed in their hands. However, some Mr. Welch and Mr. Goode eye the chicken. Tim Malenfant and Sue LaPointe nasts. aspinng gym- Come on, drop! Amy Alitalo and Mr. Berthiaume try to pass a lifesaver. 11 Senior's were not as fortunate as others and discovered that their coordination is not as concise as they hoped it to be. Many of them wandered away with egg on their face , so to speak. Concluding the outdoor events, was the tug-of-war. Almost everyone participated in this challenge. As the Seniors tested their strength against one another, many came sliding to the ground while others smiled at their success. In the meantime, an on going volleyball game was in action that people came in and out of between activities. Also, a lot of Seniors could be found reminiscing about their childhood swinging on the monkey bars, playing four square and practicing hopscotch. Inside Crocker School, several Seniors discovered the gym. They played a light- hearted game of basketball or swung on the gymnastic rings. Soon, it was chow time and everyone waited in line for fresh- ly baked Kentucky Fried Chicken, which was a break from tradition. Most would agree it was worth the wait. With the familiar WAAF music in the background, the ceremony concluded with a tricky lifesaver pass. The challenge 1 Oh Lori. Oh Tim. OH LORI!!! OH TIM!!!! 12 of getting a lifesaver onto another's tooth- pick is much more difficult than one could imagine. The faculty even got involved in this highly skilled competition. All in all, the Senior Reception was quite satisfying. Just about everyone left with a happy Memory to cherish or dirty clothes to wash from the day's rugged activities. If nothing else, I think the Seniors felt closer together than they ever did before. The pressure-free surround- ings seemed to have stimulated a jovial atmosphere. Hopefully, this enthusiastic mood will last throughout the year and reflect on to our underclassmen peers. Debbie Thibodeau does some fancy footwork, (be- low) Stop smiling Joanne, this is war! 13 Leading Pioneers The class of 1985 invested a hundred and fifty dollars into the rock. It took eight gallons of white paint and five gallons of red paint to create that traditional master- piece. Several seniors spent a Sunday afternoon in Septennber painting. Setting up shop, the seniors assembled safety ropes, which later became their only link to life at treacherous moments. As they painted their way down the rock, their goal became more of a challenge as David Cutting, Reggie Achilles, and others demonstrated. Of course, the seniors always mix work with pleasure. Radios blasted and fashion designers let their creativity go wild. They were making red and white hand- prints on old t-shirts, jeans, and sweat- pants in various collages. Just about everyone had someone's autograph on their attire that would become a souvenir. After two coats of paint and five hours later the ROCK was finished. Painters marvelled at their artwork. They auto- graphed it and picked up camp for the long trip down the trail. Leaving with a smile of accomplishment and a story to share, they all joined to become one lead- ing pioneer. Dave Cutting is all tied up in his his work, (below) Reggie, Brian, Tim and Mich try to keep from sl ip- ping on the paint. 15 lolly Kreidler, the Queen, gives the camera a beau- ful smile. Livia Racz keeps in tune. We Are One FHS! FHS! , roared throughout the stands on Homecoming day. Hundreds of red and white balloons floated into the sky to officially commence the football season and the court lit up the school float. With Holly Kreidler as Queen and Steve Femino as King, the football team already was off to a good start. While the court graced the field wearing elegant gowns and three piece suits, the float rolled around the track and the fans cheered on the team coming on the field. Everyone became one as our team defeated St. Peter-Marian, 30-0. Grasping arms, singing Mr. Touchdown, and exchanging smiles, F.H.S. fans were going strong and remained strong throughout the season. Editor's note: Members of the Homecoming Court were: Holly Seretto, Shelly Monette, Heather Himes, Rachel Maillet and Lori Siart; escorted by Juan Torres, Tim Malenfant, Mike Phaneuf, Frank Balaguer and Chris Cucchiara. The Queen was Holly Kreidler and the King was Steve Femino. Running gracefully, Mile Nelson heads up the court for the first rally of the year. 17 What in the World What in the world would make Michelle Woodard sit on Chris Cucchiara's lap, make Ron Burke sit on Mark Winters lap; make Mr. Sullivan rant and rave in a cardboard box; and make Mr. Berthiaume display his wondrous talent of belly-puffing? The answer, of course, is the Thanksgiving Day Rally. This high pitched, wild frenzy, is the annual excuse for Fitchburg High Football fans to go crazy. It is two hours of entertainment — the term used loosely — on or about the oldest high school rivalry in the I IS or THE country. Fitchburg vs. Leominster. The crowd was especially excited this year with the belief that this was to be the year of the long awaited upset. Mistress of ceremonies, Booster club president Lori Lareau, calmly introduced the cheerleaders as the opening act, and after that the place was wild. After the varsity and junior varsity cheerleaders performed some of their best cheers, it was skit time. As usual, the procrastinating class of 1985 saved the skit preparations until the last week. But, also, as usual, the class of 1985 put on a great show. Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving was a success due to the seniors personalities and props. Then again, what skit could be a failure that included Mr. Fred 'Til sell anything Sullivan and Mr. Ron how far can you stick your stomach out Berthiaume. Also deserving high honors in the Thanksgiving Day skit category was the Freshman class. Their football reunion was original, humorous and Even pregnancy can't keep Mr. Berthiaume from the stage. And now for something completely different, Rob Dassault, a man with three hands. 19 good-naturedly-insulting to certain members of the football team. In addition to the cheerleaders dance routine, the skits, the band, the majorettes and the Raider, some important speeches were made. Athletic Director Doug Grutchfield stated, perhaps the best point, when he said that the Fitchburg High Football team was not playing just for themselves but for the pride of the entire Fitchburg community. That, in fact, is what the (right) Mr. Fred Sullivan-the voice heard around the world, (below) Missy Sulin twirls to the music. I do have nice nails don't I? 20 As the Fans Filed Out. IILM Thanksgiving Day Rally has always been about. It is a chance for the students and faculty of Fitchburg High along with the parents and friends of Fitchburg to show their pride in the Football team. Finally, the stage went to the Football team. Coach Dubzinski talked about the team's record, it's hopes for becoming the first team since '72 to beat the Devils, and it's great players who would lead the team to that victory. Then Coach Dubzinski extended welcome to the student body to come to the game Thanksgiving Day. At last, as the Alma-Mater played, the fans filed out of the auditorium. A 23 Something To Dance About! Thanksgiving week! What a mementous time for F.H.S. Seniors! What a great tinne to cut classes and not get caught! The 1984 Thanksgiving week will be fondly remennbered by the Class of '85. A tremendous rally, joyful, decorated halls, a victory over perennial rival Leominster, and to top it off, a brilliant Victory Dance. Come on guys, what's so funny! 24 Many traditions are associated with the Thanksgiving Dance. Barring a few years with early blizzards, it's always been held on the Friday after Thanksgiving. It has also by tradition been a semi-formal dance. This year was no exception. The girls decked themsleves out in their finest clothes and boys de-mothballed their suits. Another tradition continued this year was that the dance was a Sadie Blen reflects on the evenings activities. Hawkins. The girls finally had a chance to ask their favorite beaus out. Preparations for the dance began on Wednesday immediately following the rally. With the able instruction of Mr. Sullivan, Ms. Manzello, Mrs. Zeiner and Ms. Breau, a bevy of students worked industriously. After a recess for the game, the group reconvened Friday morning to finish the job. The couples began arriving at 7 p.m. They spent the next four hours laughing and dancing to Catch-Five . After the dance many people retired to a meal at Sinagpore. After another filling and wallet emptying meal everyone returned home to dream of the night and cherish the memories. And for entertainment . . . Santa Claus disguised as Chris Cucchiara came to our town 2 days early this year. There to greet him in Fitchburg High's festive cafeteria were several Special Education students who received Christmas cards from Santa and his elves, Amy Alitalo and Sue LaPointe. Santa's helpers posed for the cameras and spread a contagious light spirit throughout the crowd. In addition to Santa's crew, many members of the Student Council planned activities such as craft and pastry booths and coin games. But, the highlight of the fair was the pie eating contest. Definate excitement! Eager students gathered at the tables each with a master plan to devour their pie. Within seconds, Brian Donelan had flipped his apple pie over and plopped it out of tin onto the table. Several followed suit, and unfortunately Brian and his partner Michele L'Abbe didn't taste the sweet pleasure of victory. Another popular spot was the ice cream sundae stand. Students and teachers alike quickly glued themselves in line waiting for a smooth, cold treat. Most would agree, however, that Doc received the best treat of all when he won the handmade gingerbread house that everyone was admiring. Once again F.H.S. created a holiday spirit at the Christmas Fair. The anticipation for Christmas intensified from that day on-for the many who attended went home with an extra boost of enthusiasm. Thanks Student Council! Brian Donelan displays how he eats!!! 27 Don't Ask Them To Clean The Pans A gourmet meal in the style of the Old Country? And speaking of country, how about a country breakfast of delicious pancakes and sausage? Well, not exactly, but you can be sure to find something close at the annual Fitchburg High Band Spaghetti Supper and Pancake Breakfast. The culinary wonderment starts in the fall with the Spaghetti Supper. This year's supper wasn't visited by any freak storms, but everyone had a good time anyway. The talents of the F.H.S. Cafeteria Staff were brought into play to create the feast, including the cooking of that world renouned spag, and the band members were enlisted as servers, waiters and waitresses, salad makers, and a slew of other jobs they aren't suited for. Later in the year comes the ever popular Pancake Breakfast. By this time the band has become proficient with the skills needed to provide the best in dining comfort. Again acting as a horde of serving dervishes they sling the (below) You're smiling now Miss Gilbride, but wait until you taste the spaghetti, (right) Kim Stone serves the finished product. A morning worth of baked sausage grease could daunt even an industrial strength S.O.S. pad. The band parents offered their expertise in the kitchen to create a breakfast that won't soon be forgotten by anyone. Finally, after all the chaos is over, the band heads wearily homeward, thankful that their culinary duties are over for yet another year. Swishing smoothly through a mogul field gives a skiier a feeling unknown to any other athlete. It's a feeling of accomplishment that is so tremendous, it's scary. Knowing that you have conquered a steep battlefield of bumps and ice alerts your sense of excitement. But with danger comes skill. The knowledge of knowing when to and not to turn is vital. One wrong move could mean the end of your skiing season. As you improve with experience so will your technique. Technique is the puzzle piece needed to look like a professional. Of course, one can not forget the social aspects of skiing after al chairlifts are made for two. So often, people get paired up with a stranger who later becomes a good friend. Not to mention the lodge which is filled with frozen bodies huddling around the fire or rubbing each other's hands in an unlit corner. Thus, there is an uplifting sensation of risk that gives gusto to the sport of skiing. 45 More reserve energy than a Skfy A HQ Picture if you can a group of refined, Uai I Jt li ai lO. well behaved, controlable students, all working together toward a common goal, this will give you a perfect idea of what not to picture when you are thinking about the Fitchburq High X-Country and Field Hockey members do it up. Though this group has more reserve energy than a can of baked beans, they have about as much restraint as Joan Rivers on the Johnny Carson Show. Seriously though, this group of dedicated hard working individuals is responsible for the exciting and meaningful posters that fill our school during the football season and the decorations in our auditorium for the rallies. Presiding over this years Booster Club are Lori Lareau, president, Karen .1 Mclntyre, vice-president, Ellen Martin, secretary, and Cindy Cuddy, treasurer. In many ways the booster club meetings are as much a social event as a work effort. Membership varies from meeting to meeting and extends to include just about anyone that has made a poster during their stay at F.H.S. Testing ones spelling skills and artistic ability the true challenge of a booster club member is to see how many ways one can keep from getting paint on ones' clothes. The booster club still reamins a viable part of Fitchburgs sports, being the only remaining club in the school, due to Prop 2V2, the club is funded by contributions, fund raising, and dues. Responsible for rallies, poster painting, fan buses and just plain fun. You have really missed something if you haven't been to a Thursday nite booster club meeting. Hi Michelle . . . having fun? Cheerleader, Paula Leger, paints a letter of support. 47 Ah, the glow of the footlights! The thrill of standing in the spots! The pain of hundreds of pennies striking your body! Well, maybe the last example doesn't bring back pleasant memories for the cast. The sadists in the audience enjoyed it pretty well, though! Even with the penny pounding, the 1985 Senior Class Play was a joy for both cast and audience. It all began in early November. A schedule was set up culminating in the play The Clumsy Custard Horror Show , being shown on the nights of Jan. 30th and 31st. But difficulty in blocking (the Worfle had trouble falling) and a sneaky ice storm forced the play to be postponed until Feb. 13th and 14th. After putting those problems behind them the cast settled down and worked diligently until the play. By opening night we were sure we could handle anything. We were wrong. Our lead, Swashbuck Valpariso, lost his voice after the first night. That first night went off with a lot of fun, but the second night had a lot of impromptu . . . changes. The laughs were swallowed up by the ceiling, the audience left for other pursuits, the footlights cooled down, and the cast signed programs while eating Chinese Food. Although The Clumsy Custard Horrow Show will not be seen by us again, it will always occupy a special spot in our mind. 49 We Musta Speak Wid Da Laurie Carlson has a reason to cry wolf. Once a year you can see anyone from Little Red Riding Hood to Queen Elizabeth roaming the halls at Fitchburg High. No, the inmates of Bellview are not on a field day; it's the cast of the Competitive Plays. Headed by Ms. Gallo, this program has been one of the most popular class activities at F.H.S. This dramatic event pits the Sophomore, Junior, and Senior classes against each other. Each class performs a one act play that is judged by three officials. Each class has the opportunity to win awards for Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress and Actor, and the coveted award for Best Play. In March of 1983, the Senior class of 85 made it's debut in A Children's Story . In 1984, the class of 86 filled the auditorium with laughter with the raucous comedy satire, Little Red Snares the Wolf . All those that saw their renouned tree scene will agree that their talent truly blossomed on stage. The class of 85 returned in Victoria at 18 , the story of Queen Victoria's rise to royalty. Tomorrow is Saturday and we can sleep as long as we want to, right? Wrong! say approximately 90 F.H.S. students. They are members of the marching band, and for them Saturday is rehearsal day. Each and every weekend, rain or shine, the Raiders drag themselves out of bed, assemble their equipment, and make their way to Lowe Field. There they practice the music, maneuvers, and teamwork it takes to be a great band. The season starts early for the musicians. School has scarecely shut its doors for the summer, yet they are already sorting music, rearranging sections, and preparing the Freshmen for the tough days ahead. As the season progresses the intensity of Saturday morning increase. The Raiders play for football games, Members of the Raiders Marchmg band — musicians, cheerleaders, majorettes and flag squad. Ron goes Mexican. parades, and countless other events, most of which occur when the rest of the world is asleep. Rainy days are always a relief, because they mean one less half-time show to worry about. The official end of marching season comes about on Thanksgiving day — the day when the band goes on the field for the last time, the day that symbolizes the culmination of four years of hard work for the Seniors. Although this year the band had an extra performance to play for, the Superbowl at Kelleher field, Thanksgiving Day was still the most special, for it was as it always is. the day when everything came together. 55 A Whirl and Two groups that attract little notoriety in school, yet are an intricate part of their organizations, are the Majorettes and Flag Squad of the Marching Band. The members of these two dedicated groups spend long and continuous hours of hard practice trying to coordinate their routines to the bands music for that Saturdays half-time show. Not only do they have to think up a routine each week, but must perform this routine in unison with each other while marching to the beat of the base drum, crossing a football field, and trying to stay in a straight line, and above all not dropping a spinning swirling baton or flag. Most average A Swirl individuals have trouble walking and chewing gum at the same time. The majorette and flag squads attribute all their fine training to two excellent coaches Miss Marsha Gilbrid and Miss Linda Fiorentino. The next time we take notice of the majorette and flag squads we can truly apprecia the hard work and dedication of this truly remarkable group of performers. The 1984 Winter Concert was the culmination of months of intensive work by both the Fitchburg High Concert Band and the Brass Ensemble. Despite an ever decreasing audience, the band was warmly received and applauded for their performance of Rondo, and the holiday number A Christmas Portrait. In the absence of the Stage Bands, the talents of some of the band's brass players were called on to participate in a Christmas Ensemble. This group played many holday sing-a-long tunes including the ever popular Jingle Bells. For the band's Freshman members, this is the first experience with High School stage performance. Both the music style and the playing involved are much different than that required during the outdoor Football season. For the Senior members, this is a reflective time, a time when many first realize that they will be moving on. Some will go on to perform in college and private bands, and some will end their music career with the Spring Concert. Mr. Thorne leads the band to a fine performance. The Christmas Brass Ensemble plays Jingle Bells. Livia Racz makes a fine Christmas Portrait . Capturing Memories Yearbooking is a talent. It's a combination of journalism skills, photography expertise, formating abilties and simply an eye for perspective. Any of these talents are useful to be a member of the yearbook staff. Another asset that is needed in a person is perseverance. You could spend days putting two pages together even a week to write an article. It takes time to make an article perfect so that it has no grammer or spelling mistakes not to mention the right technique. Writing this year has been emphasized in our yearbook so that years from now people will recall the most vibrant memories. Not only are journalism skills important but so are photography skills. To capture a football player catching a touchdown or someone getting splashed with a water balloon definately takes dexterity. Action is the main ingredient for a stunning picture. If an observer can say, Wow, how did they get this picture? A photographer knows he or she has completed the task. Aside from snapping the photographs, someone has to know where to place the pictures on the page. The size and position of a picture What's that Uvia? April Page is always willing to lend advice. can certainly effect one's visual image. For instance, if the most predominant photograph isn't in the middle of the page, the reader might ignore the rest of the photos. Layouts are crucial! Bring all these skills together as one and you get a super team. Their dedication to excellence propels them to stay from one in the afternoon until nine at night. Then, when that polishec book is off the press and in the yearbook's staff's hands, an enormous feeling of achievement explodes in each and everyone of them. For they have just helped to capture history! The Yearbook staff at B. U. for the New Englar Scholastic Journalism Conference. 60 61 The yearbook isn't all balls and chains though. A good part of it includes trying to nnd the keys to Shifty's locker so we can dip into the supply of Bit-O-Honeys and Charm's Pops. Why just before our last deadline, Meesh and I (doesn't that bug you not knowing who am) spent about ten minutes pulling dead skin off of our lips with tape. I know it sounds kind of gross, but we found it interesting at the time. Other countless hours were spent trying to sneak pictures of the elusive Jeannie LaBelle into the yearbook. Some of the captions we came up with for pictures would have made Xavier Hollander blush or Eddie Murphy crack a smile. Some of the most memorable moments of yearbook were the time Meesh set off the alarm on the third floor and set Shifty into fits of laughter, when we all stuck our faces out the window to watch a fight on the front stairs, and when we made gooney faces in the plastic yearbook mirror. We all managed to have a good time while we worked , sort of like the seven dwarfs, but we whistled 'What A Day For A Daydream . So while you thought we were all in room 315 working our tails off to meet a deadline, we were, but we were doing it while we listened to Shifty's battered radio and ate Kentucky Fried Chicken. This nnarks the beginning of class competition. The first true test, however, of who is better, really comes the day that the Junior-Senior basketball game is held. Three weeks prior to this competition, class advisors canvas the halls in dire search of basketball talent . Their second task is to seek out two head coaches. This year Junior girls were coached by district runner up boys basketball coach Doug Grutchfield. Coach Grutchfield was handed the unnerving task of molding together a well disciplined girls team. The boys were coached by ex-football standout and Vice Principal Peter Stephens. While the loyal Junior fans patiently waited for the appearance of their girls basketball team, the Freshman and Sophomores were busy battling each other. The time had finally arrived! When the Junior girls took the court they resembled Tom Selleck's harem — fresh from Diamond Head. Outfitted in sunglasses and Hawaiian shirts, they certainly didn't resemble any basketball team ready to do battle with the mighty Seniors of 84. In the first quarter the Class of 85 took a slight lead as heavly favored Senior boys could not believe what was happening. The Junior boys were able to compete on an equal basis with the 65 Running Like Mercury We were all nervous. None of us had run yet, but still our hearts were pounding in our chests. Sonne of us couldn't run to save our lives and some of us ran like deer. Today though, we all had to run like the God Mercury. How did we get ourselves into this'' , was running through many of our minds then. Every eye would be trained on us when we started our run. The class depended on us to steal the victory away from the Senior Class. They had defeated us in basketball and this was our last chance to humiliate them before they graduated. Our strategy was simple. We saved most of our fastest runners for the last legs of the race. Of course, this could blow up in our faces if they took the lead early in the race. Our best runners would have been wasted. We were also hoping that the bear that hid in the pine trees would jump on the Seniors backs instead of ours. Not exactly a strategy that General Patton would have been proud of, but nonetheless, the only strategy that we had. As for the result, well, history speaks for itself. Chorus Officers: t 1ary Morey and Kim Stone Class office at Fitchburg High is not just an adventure, it's a job. After being elected in the Spring of the past year an officer comes back into school in September and instantly begins his or her work. Whether it is class office, band office, student council or any other position, there are always some really hectic moments. Organizing a dance at the last minute, planning a sleigh hde, or putting together a Thanksgiving skit can turn out to be a harrowing experience. Many of the officers put in long extra hours that most people aren't even aware of. Some one has to do the decorating for the Thanksgiving dance or carry crates of chocolate into the band room before a big sale. This is not to say that the officers do all the work by themselves. No, much like to actual president the officers can count on a few hard working friends to be there when an extra hand is needed, or maybe even an extra car (Volkswagen). Any officers job comes with it's equal share of compensations though. Officers get more exposure than most students do, and they get to walk in the halls without anyone ever asking them for a pass. (Just kidding Mr. Goode.) They get free tickets to the sleigh rides. (Don't get me wrong, they pay for their own tickets, but they get to keep all of the useless leftovers that no one else bought too.) Probably the least pleasant part of being an officer is when a person has to get up in front of the entire student body and try to convince them that they are better for the job than anybody else. This is difficult because most of them start off with the same amount of expehence, none. Sometimes they have to run against fnends that they would have liked to have in office if it weren't for the fact that they were running too. So there you have it, a little bit about what it is to be an officer. Doesn't it sound like loads of raucous fun. I bet you'll be crying for months because you never ran for an office now. 71 From the first day we timidly walked through the kindergarten doors, we have depended on teachers for knowledge, guidance and support. At the high school level, those needs have more than trippled with the addition of more demanding courses, frantic college and career choices and everyday human problems. Yet who do we still t urn to for help? Teachers. This year, the Boulder extends special thanks to special teachers — the administrators. During our high school years these have been the people in charge of our knowledge, guidance, and support. Gratefully we thank the Class of 1985's Administration Lineup: Principals: Ernest Hunter, Joseph Laino, Stanley Goode Deans: Richard Masciarelli, Peter Stephens Advisors: Mary Pat Wilson, Stephen LeBlanc, Fred Sullivan Secretary: Mrs. Cioffi Guidance Counselor: Reginald Quinn Athletic Directors: Tom Crank, Doug Grutchfield It's a long list — but there's an even longer one. And that's the list of this year's actual dedication. This years decisive yearbook staff dedicates The Boulder to all the teachers — elementary and secondary — who have filled our needs. Perhaps it seems anti-climatic to not name one person as previous classes have done in their dedications. But think about it. Can we exclude any one of our teachers from dedication — from thanks for having taught us something, be it important or trivial; for having made us tougher; made us more human; made us laugh? Of course certain teachers stand out in our minds as being the favorite or the best, but each year it seems we have a new Student's pet And although we could easily dedicate this book to our most recent favorite, it would hardly be fair. Who's to say our favorite first grade teachers weren't as wonderful as our favorite 12th grade teachers? Of course our needs have changed now and we might prefer a teacher who can help us solve physics problems over one who can help us tie our shoes. But back then, getting that shoe lace tied was a big need because if it weren't tied we couldn't play kickball at recess. Do you remember your Kindergarten teacher? I do because, ironically, he was Mr. Deschenes. Now at six years old our needs were simple. The only knowledge we needed was our ABC's. The greatest guidance was in buttoning our coats or putting on our boots. The only support we needed was a pat on the head for remembering which way to walk to school. But at six years old and away from home for the first time in this odd place called Kindergarten, those needs were the most important ones in our lives. Who filled those needs? In my case it was this very kind, dark-haired teacher with glasses who used to let kids play in a sandbox. Mr. Deschenes was my favorite most important teacher because he helped me out with the necessities of that time, as all our teachers have every year of our schooling. Simply because our needs change shouldn't mean that those who filled past needs must become less important. Also, who's to say that my favorite teachers are also yours. We've all been exposed to so many different personalities and styles that everyone has a different choice of the ideal, most loved teacher. Someone's idea of a hilarious teacher is someone elses idea of a teacher who wastes time. For one who finds a teacher sincere, there's another who thinks t hey're insincere. The point is we all have various memories of teachers who stand out in our minds as being the best. It is for these reasons that the Yearbook Staff leaves you to make your own personal dedication. So that you may never forget the teacher who taught you to read; who told you a joke; who told you a dirty joke; listened; who gave advice; who stimulated your mind; who put you to sleep; who made you appreciate; who caught you cheating; who didn't send you down to Mr. Stephens for cheating; who was your friend; who, most importantly, taught you something worth learning. One of our toughest competitors, Doherty, breaks our spotless record, 9-1, with the season opening game. In the closing seconds of the game we led with Craig Lareau's six points, but, Doherty still had 56 seconds to do damage to the score, 6-6. Then Matt Dubuque kicked an extra point giving Doherty a 7-6 lead with 18 seconds left. Unfortunately, our Raider players didn't know what they were up against since this was our first meeting with Doherty. Although, this loss may have helped us. Unquestionably, defeat can make a team stronger rather than weaker. Our homecoming game against St. Peter-Marian proved to be quite profitable. Phil Morrilly took a handoff, zoomed up the middle, went 30 yards and scored our first touchdown. Marvelling the crowd, Ed Sever blocked a St. Peters punt, grabbed the ball in mid-air, and dashed 35 yards for a TD. Later in the second quarter, Scott Wirtanen caught a 25 yard TD pass from Craig Lareau. Two minutes before the half, Dave Brown scored a 1 9 yarder. Craig, Phil and Reggie, Ready for action. Polishing our record with a 30-0 win for our first CMC victory, our Raiders were rolling on. Kept in high spirits, we dominated over Wachusett, 14-6. The dynamite two-some of Craig Lareau and Scott Wirtanen kept the morale up. They linked up for a 45 yard touchdown pass. Also, in the spotlight, Mike Kazogles, intercepted a tipped pass with two minutes to go in the ballgame. Then, Joe Kreidler scored from 13 yards out a couple of plays later and Mike Romano kicked two barefoot extra points. Establishing a winning streak, our Raiders clubbed St. Ber nards, 35-6. Although St. Bernards got the first touchdown, Brown returned an ensuing kickoff 75 yards for the tying points. Mike Romano added an extra point so Fitchburg led by one point. Being the great performer he is, Brown took an inside handoff from quarterback Lareau and scored from nine yards out. Rich Gallant motored in a 60 yard touchdown run and the extra point was good by Shawn Kelley. Now, our Raiders faced a greater challenge, undefeated CMC opponent Holy Name. Our opponents 7-0 lead only inspired our Raider players to work harder. The show began with a 50 yard pass from Lareau to Scott Wirtanen. Next, Brown scored an amazing three touchdowns in the game giving F.H.S. a 28-7 lead. 102 bowl An inspired Raider defense held Holy Name in check while Joe Kriedler and Phil Morrilly added points to increase the Fitchburg advantage. Shortly after, Doug Anderson recovered a St. John's fumble on the Pioneer's two. Rich Gallant raced into the end zone on first down after the recovery and Romano successfully kicked both PAT'S. After a scoreless second and third period, Lareau again found Wirtanen open for a touchdown pass. Leading 32-0 at the end of the first half, there was no doubt of the outcome. The reserves proudly played most of the second half. Reserve Todd Deacon brought the crowd to its feet with a fine 75 yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Breaking a three year jinx, our defensive unit overpowered a usually tough Bedford team. There was no question as to what the result of this game would be. After five years of ties and one point games, Fitchburg defeated Bedford 24-0. Defensive linebacker Chuck Sandberg intercepted a pass on the 7 and ran it in for the Raider's first score. Defensive backs Mike Connolly and Scott Wirtanen added a couple of interceptions, setting up two of Fitchburg's scores, as the entire defensive unit was praised by Coach Dubzinski on this Saturday. Aside from a Thanksgiving victory, a win over Super Bowl 1 2 victor Milford, must have been one of our sweetest victories. Dave Brown scored the first TD on an inside reverse, and Mike Romano added a last second field goal to put the Raiders ahead 10-0 at half time. Dave Brown and Phil Morilly added a touchdown each in the second half and Milford became Fitchburg's 9th victim with the dreaded Blue Devils remaining on the schedule. 105 106 The drum line, led by senior Stephen Howard, performs one of its fine halftime numbers. An estimated crowd of 10,000 jammed the bleachers; that is except for the Leominster side. Because of Leominster's losing season and the rise in ticket prices, their side of the field was dotted with blue while Fitchburg fans oozed in the holes. Before, after and during the game an electricity sizzled in the atmosphere. Raider fans united doing their version of the wave, grasping bodies to the Mr. Touchdown theme and patting many winter coated backs. Each time a touchdown was made, a zap of high emotion joined the young and the old alike. People became symbols rather than individuals. When Dan Doiron caught his first and last touchdown pass from 107 Scott Wirtanen, the fans went into hysteria. Throwing their arms up and waving their red and white pom-poms, they were more than proud of him. Also, Dave Brown, Phil Morrilly, Craig Lareau, and Mike Romano, gave the fans something to cheer about. The defensive unit of Mike Connolly, Chuck Sandberg, Doug Anderson and Ed Bever, were outstanding players who were also continually noticed on the field all day. At half time, the band and cheerleaders put on a smashing show. The traditional Joshua fought the Battle of Jericho performance entertained the crowd more than it ever had before. Smiles shined underneath the band members hefty hats and Chuck and Dave shake loose a fumble as St. Germaine winner Doug Anderson recovers it for Fitchburg. (above) Dean. Unfortunately in the closing minutes, Dean Romano (five tackles, one sack) broke his ankle. A mellow hush filled the air as Dean was wheeled to the ambulance. Soon, however sparks of electricity were bursting again in the bleachers. 5 ... 4 ... 3 . . . 2 . . . 1 . . . !!, the crowd hollered, pouring onto the field congratulating the players, lifting Shawn Kelley above their heads and literally crying with happiness. As Raider fans emptied into the city, cars, decored with red and white streamers and balloons, honked their horns down Main Street. Thousands of them tasted victory rather than cold turkey. Leominster's heads were low, they knew who deserved to win. The Cow loop , the Goody-Goody run , Oak Hill and the dreaded run from Sheldon's ice-cream (without the ice cream) are a few of our traditional long-distance runs. Occasionally we do a sprint work-out at Crocker field. When meet day arrives, we load the bus along with the boys cross-country team. Our destination is Coggshall park, our home course. Although our stomach's aren't quite steady when we enter the park, we try to psyche ourselves up with some rousing cheers for F.H.S. We warm up with various calisthenics led by the team captains. Two minutes before the race begins, Coach gets us in a huddle with our hands in the center, this signifies that we are a team, then he gives us a short pep talk. We yell 1-2-3-Let's go! and make our way to the starting line. Tension and anxiety well up inside of us as we wait for the gun or the go, signifying the start of the race. When it's heard, a mass of bodies and legs lunge fonward as everyone hopes to get ahead yet tries not to trip anyone or fall. The beginning is a fast pace, but once we reach our corner, everyone settles into their own pace. Throughout the course there are hills and more hills. It's a challenge to run through the woods and avoid the stumps, rocks, mud and occasionally brooks, but the pine needles do provide a cushion for pounding feet. Cross-country running is a unique sport. Each competitor runs for her team yet — she is also trying to acheive her best time. Once one finishes a race, she is filled with a sense of accomplishement and pride for having just participated. Coach Gastonguay puts up the season's schedule and it looks like such a long time on paper. In reality, however, the season slips by so quickly and for us Seniors the 4 long years are quickly ending, all the races, all the time spent together, all the memories . . . Things were going pretty successfully until our 2nd meet against Gardner which we lost 34-28. Cross-town rival Leominster went under and we managed to keep up a winning streak until St. John's. Our last home meet against Lunenburg came too fast. It was the last shot at getting on the all-time top ten list on our home course Frank Balaguer did a little more than that on that day. Frank went on to finish 40th at the State meet. What really matters though is that all of us who were on the team have memories that no one can ever take away from us. Like Franky's break-dancing fits in the locker room, cruising in Ace's car listening to ZZ Top, or having shampoo fights in the showers. It is these things, not how many meets we won or lost, that make-up the memories that will stay with us. 113 Frenzy Fielders F.H.S. 0 Notre Dame Academy 1 F.H.S. 0 Leominster 6 F.H.S. 0 St. Bernard s 1 F.H.S. 0 Holy Name 3 F.H.S. 0 Wachusett 4 F.H.S. 1 Notre Dame Academy 2 F.H.S. 0 Leominster 0 F.H.S. 0 Wachusett 3 F.H.S. 0 Notre Dame Academy 1 F.H.S. 2 Leominster 0 F.H.S. 1 Notre Dame Academy 1 F.H.S. 2 St. Bernard's 0 F.H.S. 1 Hudson 2 F.H.S. 1 Holy Name 1 (left to right) front row: Cindy Cuddy. Field Hockey 84 This year's field hockey team may not have made it to the districts or even had a winning season, but they did accomplish a feat that each player will always remember. For the first time in years, Fitchburg beat Leominster. Although this rivalry was not accompanied by thousands of cheering fans or given any publicity, the effort and desire to win was as intensely competitive. The achievement experienced by each member was like they had just won the superbowl. The final record could not be bragged about, but the team must be commended for it's unrelenting determination and hard work. Girls Basketball team was in the hot, tense gym at Wachusett Regional High School. This is the setting of the 1984-1985 Raiders basketball teams' most memorable game. With a season record of 16-5, it would probably be assumed that their most memorable game would be one of the sixteen wins Yet that 49-51 battle with nemesis Wachusett proved to be the incentive for carrying out the teams' intensity to the end of the season and to the districts. Fitchburg had never beaten the Mountaineers and in recent years hadn't even come close. So to have come within two points of a dramatic win up there was a victory in itself. It proved to the team that it was possible to beat the Wachusetts and St. Peters of the league. It made them work hard to prove it to everyone else in the districts. The game was mostly equal the entire way and a nail-biter at the end. With a little more than twenty seconds left in the game, Karen Lamarine was fouled and sunk one of the one and ones, tying the score at 49. Wachusett got the ball and with twenty seconds got fouled. They hit both shots, the Raiders failed to score again and the game was history. But not before Pam Briggs scored 27 points and Jean LaBelle, Kelly Rice, Karen Lamarine, Aida Colon and Michelle Bernard made their presence known. The second half of the Wachusett game was representative of the various talents of this years team. It revealed the great ball handling ability of Junior Tri-captain Kelly Rice; the defensive talent of Senior Tri-captain Jean LaBelle, Sophomore Jane Baho and Junior Michelle Bernard; the outstanding offensive performances of Sophomore Karen Lamarine and Aida Colon; and the all around talents of Tri-captain Pam Briggs. Pam has been the major reason for the girls most successful record that the team ever had. It was a record that put the Raiders in the District E State Basketball Tournament for the second consecutive year. And it was in those districts that Pam reached a personal goal: She became the first girl in F.H.S. history to sink her 1000th career point. Congratulations to Pam, Coaches Tony Alario and Dan Brasili and the entire varsity and JV team. 117 Joanne pulls down the rebound with authority. 118 ah, what a perfect shot! Who said District Championship games aren't played in December. These words were exchanged following the first home basketball game against St. Johns. The Raiders were led by Harvey Earley, 15 Pts. and team defensive standout Mike Connolly, who came up with a steal and a free throw to seal the Raiders first victory of a long 21 game schedule. The boys basketball team has grown to expect hard work and victories, however this years team was to play in a tough Christmas tournee. The Raiders beat Medford in the opening game, but fell short to the States number one ranked team Cambridge Rindge and Latin. The following night proved to be no easy task as the team who is unaccustomed to losing droped its second game of the season. Fresh off two defeats the Raiders were in dire need of a victory. Cross town rival St. Bernards proved to be the right medicine as they defeated the Bernardians 75-50. Rebounding was a major difference with F.H.S. dominating the boards. Center Rich Spike Carlson and forward Rich Gilchrist collected 16 and 15 rebounds, respectively. Fitchburg's third victory was short lived as they dropped their next two games to Philips Academy and Brockton. Having played six games out of the conference it was a welcome relief to start playing back in the C.M.C. The Raiders accepted the challenge and knocked off eight wins in a row. Fitchburg knows all about losing streaks in football and Leominster likewise experiences the same feeling in basketball. Fitchburg's football team ended an 1 1 garme Thanksgiving losing streak by beating L.H.S., and the Blue Devils returned the favor, ending a 7 game losing streak of their own with a thrilling 56-53 victory in the second meeting of the year. The encouragement and hard work of the girls is rewarded each Saturday morning. On Saturday, the boys and girls with their radios, bags and good luck mementos, squeeze into the bus as they head for Worcester South's Indoor Track. The events held are hurdles, high jump, shot put, 50 yard dash, two mile, mile, 1000, 600 and 300 yard runs. Being a cheerleader does not mean instant glamor or popularity. Against popular belief, cheerleaders are athletes. Cheerleaders must try out for the squad as every other team does. These tryouts consist of cheers, dance routines, jumps, cartwheels, tumbling and splits. The girls are all judged on appearance, voice, facial expression, eye contact, jumps, athletic ability and coordination. In addition to being hard work, cheering takes up a great deal of time. Cheers and dance routines must be made up and practiced. In the summer, camps and competitions are held. Special routines must be made for rallies. And of course, the cheerleaders' first duty — the actual games, require many hours of practice. Cheering, however, has its rewards. New friendships are made and confidence in ability grows. Ultimately, cheerleaders work together as a team. They are themselves dedicated to supporting other athletic teams. Kim dazzles and dances to Boogie Blues. Hey Hey Hey! What do you got to say! We see them occasionally at the rallies or on the day of the Kim EnA in and Sue Boucher, camera. Let's wave to the Chicken bowl, but generally we tend to overlook them. What we should not overlook is the fact that the Jay-vee cheerleaders practice just as hard and cheer with just as much spirit as the cheerleaders on the varsity level. They do routines, plan steps, practice cheers with as much intensity as all other athletes but with practically no glory. Coached by former Fitchburg High cheerleader Lori Pelletier, this years squad worked hard and succeeded, to create a celebrant, winning atmosphere for the Jay-vee games' crowd. So the next time you are one of the crowd, show some support for the girls who constantly support — join in a Jay-vee cheer. Like the basketball team, the cheerleaders put in many hours of practice each week. Walking into the cafeteria, you can hear the coach yelling Michelle, straighten your legs! or Deepen your voices and SMILE! Cheering the Raiders on to victory makes the practicing worthwhile. The cheerleaders try to generate excitement and school pride in all of the fans, and usually succeed. The basketball players will probably agree that the bus rides to away games would be a lot less interesting without the cheerleaders along. They'll probably never forget Hey la, hey la, hey la, Hey ... We know a guy whose name is Danny ... and so on. These ardent fans don't only strut their stuff in front of the crowds at basketball games. They compete in three cheering competitions, one in which they have won first place. Their vibrant personalities and persistance will always put these girls on top. (Top) The Cheerleaders support Red Raider, Brian Donelon, as he incites the crowd's spirit with his mighty voice. Nothing could keep F.H.S. from having a hockey team, not even the axe of Prop. 2V2. Through their own cost, the athletes shared the expense of funding a hockey team. None of this could have been accomplished without the time and energy of the team's coach, John Membrino. He spent many long hours on the phone lining up ice time and games. This task was even more difficult due to the lack of support. But even that couldn't break the spirit of the team members. Despite lack of funding, borrowed uniforms, and no practice time on the ice, the team finished a respectible 7-12-3. All 15 team members can look back with a sense of pride knowing they gave 1 00% of themselves in pursuit of athletic competition. 135 I know you all, and will a while uphold The unyoked humor of your idleness; Yet herein will I imitate the sun, Who doth permit the base contagious clouds To smother up his beauty from the world. Years from now we may open up our yearbook and wish for some sentimental remembrance of our years at Fitchburg High. Maybe some of us would rather a little bit humor. Hey, I'm sorry. I had a good time.) The title of president has been just that, a title. Mike, Sam and Mich deserve that title just as much. It's hard to think that it's all over. Four years of high school gone. At times it seemed like it would never end. Now that it has we may find that we wish we had some of the old times back again. I think all of us will look back to look back to the sleigh rides very much, (sorry about that) but you all have some memories locked up somewhere. Something funny or more likely some girl or guy that you had a secret, deep rooted, truly heartfelt lust for. Don't get any ideas, I wasn't talking about myself, (maybe . . . O.K., I was, but you still don't know who she is, and you never will either) You must remember one dance for some type of reason, or a rally where the cheerleaders got you really excited (and for you girls, maybe it was a football player). How about a party at the Rock, a day at the beach, or a night at beach week. When we first came to Fitchburg, the teachers probably didn't think anything special of our class. We were just another wave to hit the beaches here. Since that time we have proven ourselves to be outstanding in many areas including sports, academics, and our, shall we say, originality. When the staff at Fitchburg High finally started to notice us though, many of the faculty members said that they expected a lot from our class, I don't think they intended it to be this much! We've held the most Hawaiian dances in the northern hemisphere, we've gone through the most class advisers in school history (they're all still living), we even spent the entire night making our float in an old broken down barn. I don't think that there is one person in our class that will soon forget that it was the Thanksgiving day game to 1984 when the Red Raiders broke Leominster's winning streak. We'll remember the basketball team's great season, the Senior class play, the Senior reception and a score of other times that we've managed to leave our mark at Fitchburg High. I'll probably look back at this article years from now and wish that I had said something differently or mentioned something that I forgot to say at all. But one thing I won't forget to say is thank you. (Yes I mean you.) I'd like to thank everyone in the class for the past four years. They've been the best in my life. Hopefully they've been the same for you. I'd especially like to thank all of my classmates, teachers, and friends that have gone the extra distance to make high school worth remembering. Good-bye, good luck, and hey, just once in a while, take a minute and give three silent cheers for the Red and Gray. Reginald H. What a group. I've worked for seven months with all you crazy people and I have to say that it's been one of the most enjoyable experiences I'm sure I'll ever be involved with. I know there were times when we all thought we 'd never get all 93 pages together never mind 216. fvlaking all those changes was not an easy job. Writing all those articles, the centuhan page, baby faces, favorites, and especially those hair-pulling underclassmen pages. But we did it and we did one heck of a job. I'm very proud of this book and of all the people that help put it together. No Yearbook Editor could have asked or re- ceived such a more dedicated, sensitive, hard-working and definately unique group of individuals. I'd like to give special thanks to Jean, or Bean as I always called her. She'd always be here before or after basketball ready to go. And I still say we should become a duet singing, or trying to anyways She's Come Undone. You're the best. Then there's Chris. You always made me laugh, whether it be in some crazy article you wrote, the way you dressed, or coming out with those should have been censored remarks. Your the most incredible person I've ever met. I'm forever grateful to all you creative literaries. You all wrote terrific articles. Especially April who wrote the foot- ball article and hadn't the slightest knowledge about the game. And Joanne who couldn't stand writing articles or captions but always put 100% effort into it and always sounded super. A heartwarming thanks goes to the rest of the 1985 Boulder Staff. Your support was appreciated more than I can express. Last but no way near the least, how can I begin to express my deepest gratitude to our yearbook advisor Stephen V. LeBlanc. Your support, suggestions and advice stuck with us and saw us through. Speaking for the staff and myself, not just thank you, but the most sincerest Thank You of All. Although we may never pass this way again the mem- ories and the feeling of that great accomplishment that came out of 315 will be embedded in your and myself s mind for a lifetime.
