Wouldn't a 3.0 be easier to take if the gold F weren't at stake? Who would ever want to give up the pride of seeing their YOG painted on the rock? Would Graduation be the same without the anticipation of a week at the beach? Could Thanks- giving dinner ever taste the same if we didn't at least try to beat Leominster? Traditions are what give Fitch- burg High School life. They fill out the skeletal body of reading, writ- ing, and arithmetic and make our high school education a total living experience. The yearbook, a tradi- tion in itself, has chronicled the birth, life, and death of many tradi- tions at our school on the hill. Just as the Class of '83 has started to build their own traditions like the Spring Outing and the Bon Fire, there are a few activities that have fallen by the wayside. A Red and Gray Dance on the day after Christ- mas has gone out along with an event similar to the Senior Recep- tion, called the Junior Reception to the Seniors. Traditions not only come and go, but they also change with almost every class. The Jr. Sr. Relay, which used to be run from Worces- ter, can attest to that. This Yearbook is dedicated to honoring all the new, old, and changed traditions that we as a school, and as individual classes, carry on here at Fitchburg High School. 4 9 13 15 17 Mr. Dean Fuller was a man whom many seniors looked up to. He took over as advisor of our class in the middle of our high school career and, within a short period of time, established good raport with many of us. His fun-loving, and spirited personality gave him the ability to fit in with the students at many different school functions. To you, Mr. Fuller, we are proud to dedicate the 1 983 Boulder for all your kindness and devotion. The Class of 83 sincerely thanks you. T.G'S RAIDERS Four toots of the whistle and the F.H.S. Band is off and marching. Under the direction of Carlton Thome and assistant Marsha Gil- bride, the Band is comprised of over 1 00 members, includ- ing majorettes, flag squad and cheerleaders. The marching Band is con- stantly being called upon to lead off a July 4th parade or just welcome in the Christ- mas season by ushering Santa down Main Street on a cold December day. Along with parades, the Band also offers a fine half time of enter- tainment at all home football games, performing a variety of formations and routines, rehearsed on those cold Sat- urday mornings. Band Group Photo 20 Flag Squad Group Photo Majorettes Group Photo RAH, RAH, RAH Go Banana's! Go Go Bana- na's! Our F.H.S. cheerleaders are a fantastic bunch. There is one thing, however, that many people take for granted — the long hours of practice. Being a cheerleader is not all fun and games. A lot of work goes into the creating, planning, and putting together of routines. Then the cheers are practiced for weeks before being put into action. A good example of this is one routine we never got to see. The cheerleaders had put together a routine to be done at the Thanks- giving rally. However, there were problems with the sound equip- ment and it was canceled. The cheerleaders were very dis- appointed because they had put a lot of time and effort into it. During the summer, the cheer- leaders attend a cheering camp where they learn new cheers, jumps, twists, and pyramids. In the fall the cheerleaders held their own cheering clinic and many area schools attended this function held at the F.H.S. gym. This spring the cheerleaders will be entered in two cheering com- petitions. Because of their great determination they will un- doubtedly come out on top once again. The cheerleaders have school spirit. Debbie and friends show off their acrobatic maneuvers. Steph and April are happily doing a cheer. Cheerleaders Basketball Team Photo Roll out the Paper The Booster Club is made up of a group of school- spirited people. Everyone has seen their amateur artwork displayed in the cafeteria the morning follow- ing a booster club meeting. The Booster Club meets every Tuesday night during the fall. Their responsibilities include organizing and plan- ning rallies, making posters to boost the spirit of fellow students, running bus trips to away games, and running a concession stand at dances, basketball games, and other school functions. Running this concession stand is how the booster club is able to support itself and run its va- rious activities. What is the true meaning of spirit? The people to an- swer this are in the booster club. They are the backbone behind school spirit and they will continue to be such. The fingers say it all. 24 la gets into the spirit of FHS. '83 In the Spotlight The class of 1983 has de- veloped a very fine stage presence since its first pro- duction, a comedy called A Case of Belonging, Pre- sented in the Competitive Plays of 1981 . The cast was a small one consisting of Kim West, Liz Chicknavorian, Donna Medeiros and Lisa Johnson. This sophomore play won no awards, with most of the prizes that year going to 1 981 's Games. By the time the Competi- tive Plays of 1982 rolled around '83 was ready with a soul wrenching play about a Jewish concentration camp of World War II. The children of Terezin made a lasting im- pression on not only the audi- ence but also those who were in the production. I Nev- er Saw Another Butterfly won two awards, Best Actor to Bernie Fortin who played Honza and Best Supporting Actress to Liz Chicknavorian who was one of the children Between pesky photographers and dirty mirrors it's a wonder we reach the stage. I Butterflies were stored in their memories. Devil Kim and angel Liz battle over a soul. of the camp. The rest of the cast consisted of Donna Pel- letier as Raja, Kim West as Irena, Eileen Cos tello, Lisa Johnson, Gayle Stone, Carol Strong, Mary Tarpinian and Sue Wazal as youth of Tere- zin. The coveted Best Play award again went to the seniors and '83 had another year ahead of them to wait. The Senior Class Play, Voices From the High School, was another splen- did presentation that exhi- bited the class's tremendous amount of energy. The Com- petitive Plays of 1983 should prove to be the finest produc- tion yet. Raja and Irena discuss their hardships. The case of belonging is finally settled by the I.R.S. 29 The Yearbook Story Only four days until our deadline and we've still got 30 pages to do!!! How in the world am I going to caption this? Where's the radio? We need some music! These are just a few of the things you might hear if you walked into room 315 any day after school. The Boulder is made up of a group of dedicated people who work everyday from 2:02 until 5:00 putting together the 1983 yearbook. Shifty , the yearbook ad- visor, is a hard-working and dedicated person who puts his all into producing the yearbook. The staff is con- stantly striving towards reaching the ultimate goal. The final deadline. In early June, when the book is finally distributed, the smiles for the yearbook staff will be the just reward for a job well done. Wendy takes judo lessons. Sandy expresses her point of view. 30 John hams it up. Jon prepares to photograph his next victim. HEADS OF STATE The position of an elected officer here at F.H.S. is a tenuous one. The Class of 83' has had a different list of officers every year since sophomore year when Don- na Pelletier was President, Ernie Martineau was Vice President. Liz Chicknavorian was Secretary and Koralia Kozogles was treasurer. Ju- nior year saw Donna move to Vice President, Laurie Pelle- tier win Presidentship and Popi Michalos come in as Secretary, and Koralia's post was unshaken. Gary Philip jumped on the bandwagon Senior year to become a co- secretary with Popi, his elec- tion being the only change in 83's officers during its last year in F.H.S. The present Senior Class Officers will re- main as class officers for the remainder of our class' life. The Student Council elects its own officers, as does the Band. This year, both of Sr. Class Officers, Laurie Pelletier, Popi Michalos, Gary Philip, Koralia Kozogles, and Donna Pelletier. Jr. Class Officers. Marty Keohan, Polly Moryll, Stephanie Bourque. Tracy Ingel. Student Council Officers, John Connolly, Tina Novak, Chris Keohan, and Tracy Steeves. these groups have elected seniors but this is not always the case, as last years Band Officers can attest. The dem- ocratic process of election is obviously alive and well here at F.H.S. Freshman Class Officers, Barbara Maulding, Mike Corliss, Mike Kazogles, Chris LeBlanc, Kim Kenney. Band Officers, Lori Wilson, Michelle Fluet. Rebecca Montouri, and Arthur Libby. Sophomore Class Officers, David Cutting, Georgia George, April Alario, and Mike Lavers. CHECKMATE The F.H.S. Chess Club has had only two matches to date, one against North Middlesex that they lost, 5 to 0. and one against Oakmont in which they were victorious. 4 to 1 . At this time, Hank DeBardeleben plays first board with a 1 and 1 record. Bernie Fortin, also hav- ing a 1 and 1 record, plays sec- ond board. Third board is Steve Fortin with a 1 and 1 record. Jerry Heon is on board four with a 0-2 record followed by late comer Ken Carraba on the fifth board with a 1 and 0 record. Mr. William Vass, advisor and coach of the team, organizes the quiet matches that are held after school in the library. Bernie and Steve at the point of determining their ranks wonder what Bobby Fischer would do in a predicament like this. Will Mr. Vass be a worthy opponent for Jerry? Every move is recorded. iKi - r TV All set up to castle. It's Finger Lickin' Good For the past 30 years the school year has begun with the Sr. Reception to the faculty. It has always been an enjoyable event dispite many changes in activities and location. In its first year the reception consisted of a dinner in the cafeteria followed by skits put on by the Senior Class. Later the reception could be found at Siama Park and was held there for many years. Finally the site was once again moved to its present location at Crocker elementary school. This year's event had no skits and the Colonel ca- tered the meal but participants enjoyed it just the same. Seniors and faculty members joined in games of egg toss and three legged races. They competed with each other in games of volleyball and ultimate frisbee. Students carved jack-o-lanterns for some of the teachers younger children and everyone danced to the tunes of Tolerance. Even though the music and games have changed the spirit of tradition still remains. All the Kings horses Kim serves the winning point Shelly lets one fly. 36 Laurie and Jon stride toward victory. April prays that her egg doesn't break. 37 Rollstone Pride Painting the rock is a tradition at F.H.S. that falls into the same category as beach week. It's an activity that every healthy, high spirited class participates in and yet it's one that has no faculty advisor, student officers or budgeted funds. Classes paint their year of graduation on the rock in the spring of their Junior year after Seniors have graduated. They usually end up painting it many times more after various vandalizations by rival schools. Funds for the gallons of paint are donated by students in the school. Everyone who participates finds that the rock, always a trecherous place, is even more dangerous when covered with wet paint. It is virtually impossible to leave the rock without a few dabs of paint on you but once you've been to just one painting session the number on the hill seems to hold twice as much meaning as it did before. Our pride is showing. Kathy paints the base coat. It's harder work than what Tracy anticipated. Ori- ginally the Relay was run from the City of Worcester to Fitchburg with each run- ner, running a distance of one mile. A few years following that first race the site was changed to Crocker Field with thirty runners running a half mile dis- tance. In the early 70's the Relay was again changed to a quarter mile and twenty-five runners, and for the first time a girls race was added with the girls running a distance of 220 yards each. This traditional race was only marred once by a cancellation due to a lack of interest on the students part. However the students took a pledge never to allow a cancellation happen again. Last years race was held on June 3rd with the Senior boys from the Class of 82 winning their race. The Junior girls ran against the Freshman and Sophomore girls losing by a very close margin. However with the maturity and experi- ence gained, this years Seniors expect to walk away from Crocker Field with the thrill of victory. Deland makes a big handoff. The evening featured the debut of three new performing groups and the band in its first sit-down performance. Stage Bands I and II give their first per- formances at the Winter Concert as does the Chorus. A long fall of practice is finally brought to light. Seen previous- ly as the Marching Band at football games and parades, the Band puts on its first show as a Concert Band. The concert held in the FHS auditori- um, is free and open to the public. Both performers and audience alike enjoy the evening of seasonal music. Who will pay the pipers? Stage Band plays a familiar tune. Lisa gives her all. J } The Band gets into the Christmas spirit. 44 FHS Gets Down This year's dances at Fitchburg High School have had a new dimension added to them with the formation of the band Tolerance. Whether they bring music with their instruments and voices or with their records and superb sound system this new group has really im- proved the quality of dances at Fitch- burg High School. There is nothing like the thrill of a live performance and Tol- erance really puts on a show. Dances at the high school range from punk and costume to semi formals like the Thanksgiving dance. Over the years our gym has served as a very fine dance hall and we hope it will in the coming years. Endless Love. We are Family. Billy, don't be a hero. Jukebox heroes. 46 47 '83 Cleans Up A fund raising car wash for the Class of '83 was scheduled to fall the weekend after the first week of school. The school committee however, de- cided that this was not to be and the car wash ended up the weekend before school started. For this reason, only a select few who attended a float meeting at the home of one, Laurie Pelletier, heard of the event. At first, only the class officers were working in Stuart's parking lot but as the day progressed more Seniors showed up to help wash cars. Everyone who donated their time and energies found the event to be a worth while and cleansing experience. One Senior thought the red Camaro she washed was the best car of the day while another will always remember washing the last car of the day, Mr. Fuller's. He was a little unsure whether his car would survive but it came out shining clean! All who attended went away wearier and wetter but happy. Tracy and Dana pro-sprayers. Art does his job. Marie momentarily dry. 48 PASTA SHOWERS This year's spaghetti supper was cer- tainly unique. At the first one, the sprink- ler system went off and gave everyone and everything a shower. The firemen came to the rescue to save the drown- ing meatballs and soggy spaghetti. They shut off the sprinkler system and it was discovered that not all was a total loss. However, the spaghetti supper had to be postponed until the following Monday. The second try was much more suc- cessful. The cafeteria was one big mass of hustle and bustle. Everyone filled up on spaghetti, salad, and bread and but- ter. The deserts were made and contri- buted by various band members. Brownies, cookies, and cake were among the many desserts to top off a super meal. The spaghetti supper pro- vided everyone with a full stomach and a chance to get together with friends. Missy goes back for seconds. Finger lickin' good! Karen, an ace lemonade server. Karen's smile is deceiving. 50 Give Me An F The great spirit of F.H.S. at our rallies would send chills up anyone's spine. All the yelling and cheering for our school is an exciting thing to be a part of. Our cheerleaders lead us to clap and stomp with their cheers. The announcing of each individual football player gives everyone a feeling of pride. The famous Thanksgiving Rally al- ways has a special spark. Each class gets a group of people together and they, in turn, plan, write, and rehearse a skit. The cheerleaders do the same. The remaining students and football players always enjoy the entertainment. Even when the rally has come to a close, the last cheer has been done, and the auditorium is empty, the pride lingers on. Three Cheers for the Red and Gray. Coach honors Seniors. Wim tests for support. Fans show their support. 52 Pig pile. Who ordered quicksand. Academic Blood For the first time donor, giving blood means not only needing parental per- mission and getting stickers and pins but dealing with a great deal of anxiety. Will it hurt? Will she have to stick me twice? Will I faint? For everyone who's given before the Red Cross' visit to F. H. S. is no big deal but for the first timers, which most of us are, each step in the process is a test on the nerves. You have to fill out a questionaire, answer those same questions all over again, get your finger stabbed, have your tem- perature taken, have your blood press- ure taken and you still haven't hit the table. If you pass all the preliminaries, and there are those who don't, then you get to have your blood taken. Most peo- ple admit that it's not really as bad as it seems and the back rub is the best part. Members of the student council make sure you get all the cookies and soda you want and after 15 minutes rest you can go back to class and brag about your bravery and demand special treat- ment. All in all most agree it really is a heart warming experience. The gift of Life. Sharon watches the proceedings. Libby's comforter. They train and prepare our athletes for the more challenging varsity teams. After the drastic budget cuts in the athletic department, there are only four JV teams left, football, bas- ketball (boys and girls), and field hockey. The two fali teams had vastly different records with the football team collecting 8 wins to 2 losses and the field hockey team pulling in only 1 win against 5 losses and 8 ties. The two winter teams also had contrasting records. The girls Basketball team had 3 wins and 15 losses while 1 5 wins and 4 losses went to the boys Basketball team. It should be interesting to see how these athletes fare in later years on var- sity teams. Robin blocks out her opponent. Although every member of the team is a vital part of the group's success it has been a tradi- tion to award the extraor- dinary players. These play- ers are the ones who show great determination, team spirit as well as fine sports- manship. They've always done an excellent job while here at F.H.S., therefore it only seems proper to award and congratulate them so they realize that they are appreciated by the school and especially the Class of 83. fiAm IN ooV Mac receives his award. Dues from the treasury of each graduating class pay for the first year of member- ship for every graduate. Every year membership dues of two dollars are collected and go to the Alumni Fund, from which schol- arships of well over $20,000 dol- lars are given to graduating seniors. The two Lennon sisters, both secretaries in our main office, are responsible for keeping records on all FHS graduates, mailing dues envelopes and coordinating alumni fund raising events.
