For REFERENCE use only Published by The Class of 1976 Fitchburg High School Fitchburg, Massachusetts s earching, We travel through yesterdays we've never known and places long forgotten trying to choose a right path for the future. eflecting, We chart a course pointed out to us by others, and we share the achievements of their continuing search for the understanding of mankind. Succeeding in our own way, we pick up where they left off, and we intensify our search. s Speculating, We wonder how they instilled in us these images that never fade but inspire with time. Driven on, we travel countless roads and wander through long periods of darkness, knowing we must find a better way. cf w earing, As children we soon became familiar with each twist and turn of the road which lay before us. But as adults we emerged frightened into a world as foreign to us as the past. truggling, We took our first steps, stumbling many times, often straying off our track. Still we grew physically and mentally by learning to overcome the obstacles that confronted us. nit ing , We see that in these past three years we have become more than just individuals. Our class efforts have become more meaningful through the discoveries that we could accomplish goals which we thought beyond our reach. J had hoped to set an example and be an aid in helping this class learn to reason out all their decisions and choose the proper way to conduct their lives ... it was my wish that we both could have learned and all come out of this being better people . . . the friendships and experiences that I have gained as an adviser have made me a better teacher as well as a better individual . . . The rewards for being an adviser are many and you only have to be an adviser once to receive them. — Steve LeBlanc — In 1976, our year of graduation, we have been privileged to experience a stimulating transformation in the educa- tional atmosphere of Fitchburg High School. The motivating force behind this change is Mr. Aaron Nelson. Through his involvement in the reconstruction of the disciplinary guidelines, his democratic thinking, and his fairness with students, we have seen a new and different approach to education. Because he has made our last two years more meaningful, we owe him our sincere appreciation. O 2 D 18 Education is not something that is done for a student or to a student. It is what the student does for himself in developing his own powers. Teachers can help; so can a curriculum and an atmosphere of devotion to things of the mind. But ultimately the problem is utterly the student's. Charles Cols Top to Bottom, Left to Right Armand R. LaReau Superintendent of Business Affairs James F. Between quarters, Coach Grutchfield lectures to a tired but attentive team. Cutting off an aggressive opponent, Tony sinks a big two points. Strategically, Dave Caputi lines up a shot from the far comer. 84 Top to bottom, left to right. When you're no. 1 you always draw a big crowd. The team breaks away from the strategic game for a moment to survey the scene. Caputi and Romano cover the basket to snag the rebound. Though hard pressed by Burncoat, Pete goes up for a casual two points. Momentarily losing control of the ball, F.H.S. hoopsters skillfully work to repossess it. Coaches Grutchfield and Cordio watch contentedly as F.H.S. holds a comfortable lead. 85 Guarding a Nashua rival, Romano halts a scoring attempt. LaFrenier confronts a St. Bernard opponent in an attempt to steal the ball. The memories of togetherness we have accumulated as a class, will always be part of our being. The lessons learned will grant us the strength to face and overcome life's many o bstacles. As we look back upon our high school days, The Spirit Of 76 will mean many different things to each of us, or maybe nothing at all. If you have experienced the thrill of pride in victory or the frustration of defeat for your class, if you have shared in the excitement of a class activity or have enjoyed the glow of a personal achievement which reflects upon your class, then you will truly always have The Spirit Of 76. GYMNASTIC CENTER 197 HK1 SPECIAL CTHANKS The time has come for us to look back upon the important role that you've played in our lives and how you've given of yourself as much, if not more than any one person ever could. You've represented a binding force to all of us and contributed the guidance and assistance we needed to successfully complete this yearbook. Without you we realize that this book would not have been a reality but only an unfinished dream. To you, Mr. William Boyle, for all of this and much more we give our deepest thanks. The editors and staff of the 1976 Boulder
