I we are about lo inlro luce the players of this high school game, shy and aggressive, short and tall, cautious and carefree — they are as varied as the possible paths on which to travel, follow us and meet them. 94 We shall soon part. Let us make a compact, here, that we will never forget one another. And whatever happens to us later in life, if we don't meet for twenty years afterwards, let us all remember how we grew so fond of each other. And even if we are occupied with most important things, if we attain to honour or fall into great misfortune — still let us remember how good it was once here, when we were all together, united by a good and kind feeling which made us, for the time we were loving, better perhaps than we are. We must know that there is nothing higher and stronger for life in the future than some good memory. If we carry many such memories with us into life, we are safe to the end of our days, and if we have only one good memory left in our hearts, even that may sometimes be a means of saving us. Certainly we shall all meet again, certainly we shall see each other and shall tell each other with joy and gladness all that has happened. Ah, how splendid it will be! Well, let us go!
