You have worked closely with many of us and have instilled in us a spirit of togetherness which we can never forget. It was always a heart-warming feeling to see Room 209 buzzing with all types of activity after it was opened at 8:17. The familiar address, Hey, bug,” the constant plea to buy this and to buy that, and the merciless call for class dues, That will be two dollars please” will echo in our memories. Your door was always open for suggestions pertaining to our class or the school in general. You always listened to our problems with patience, and with enthusiasm encouraged our p lans for the future. In victory, you were by our side in the celebration; in defeat, you were there, too, with the right words to help us accept our loss. Therefore, for the devotion which you have shown to our class, we gratefully dedicate this yearbook to you with the hope that it will always stand as a symbol of our unity wherever we may be. Because you've got Soul, The Class of 1970 Dr. James N. Finch Superintendent of Schools To the Class of 1970, This year has been one of great change for all of us, and particularly for me as a new superin- tendent. I have seen much in our schools to be proud of, but nothing more important than the vitality of the students of Fitchburg High School. Since moving to Fitchburg I have attempted to participate as often as possible in school and senior activities. Fun and games at the senior reception to the faculty, the tremendous rocking enthusiasm at the football rallies, the Thanksgiving dance. The Red and Gray, competitive plays'; and Half a Sixpence,” and many other cultural, social, academic and athletic events stand out in my memory. I have been proud to become part of the Fitchburg family, sharing in its individual and group successes and efforts. I am impressed with your vitality, intelligence and good sense, and honor the association I had with the class of 1970. Sincerely, James N. Finch 18 Assistant Principals James J. Com- plete knowledge of our language helps us to communicate effectively with others, to understand their problems, and to respect them as fellow individuals. Through our classroom discussions, theater trips, and reading of great literature, w-e are exposed to many philosophies, ranging from those of Socrates to those of Becket. By accepting ideas we feel are deserving and by discarding those that we feel are not relevant or necessary to our beliefs, we are able to establish our true identities. In this way, we become more capable of bringing forth the more creative facets of our personalities. Our English Department under the expert guidance of Miss Lillian M. Taylor assists us in acquiring a sound knowledge of great literature and correct grammar, so that in the future we shall be better able to express our philosophy, hopefully for the good of all. Quinn Department Head Guidance Department The primary concern of guidance is the individual in his social setting.” Joseph Hoilis In an ever-changing world, many young people are asking, Why? What am I doing here?” These individuals need direction and our Guidance Department offers this needed counseling. The counselors are attempting- not only to steer us to the right college and vocation, but also to help us instill purpose within ourselves. Who can forget the cafeteria meetings, six-cent stamps, blue Request to Report” slips, and those three compact cubicles. Only with proper guidance such as we have available here, can a student find himself. Then he can join with others for the betterment of his social environment. Jame s T. Angelos 30 Industrial Arts Department Without tools man is nothing; with tools he is all.” Thomas Carlyle A person with reason and imagination, equipped with adequate tools and training, can build castles wherever he chooses. Our Industrial Arts Department promotes practical knowledge, cre- ativity, and dexterity, advantageous in every area of life. In ad- dition to gaining manual skills, students acquire insight into the studying, planning, and completion of projects of all kinds. Such challenges as overcoming the problem of a clogged thickness planer, applying the remedy for everything — add one-eighth of an inch,” and spending two years on a .coffee table have been successfully met by the students themselves. Mr. Russell Cook and his staff work closely with the students, guiding each toward the tools with which he can shape the future. Russell R. It is the foundation for all sciences and therefore plays a very' important role in our individual lives. Although we shall not all become scientists or mathematicians, we shall, however, always employ the fundamentals of mathematics in our daily lives — in our business transactions, or simply in the many instances of weighing, measuring, or counting. Our Mathematics Department strives to provide us with a sound basis in this language of numbers and to excite our curiosity in this important field. We’ll long wpiember the pastel green paper and math pads on which we v%rked out those difficult mathematics problems— from angles to those fascinating but intriguing functions for our advanced math- classes. We should not only know how to use figures formulas, but also to understand the reasoning beh In this way, the systems and formulas of mat! become clear to us and lead us into the other trig d Aippty them, lines will ific fields. and in Richard Lavers Edmund Ryan William Vass Library . . .the mind is restless, turbulent, strong and unyielding ... as difficult to subdue as the wind.” Bhagaved-Gita Each of us in his constant search for truth and wisdom will gain better understanding of himself. Through knowledge, which can be acquired by reading, one has vast opportun- ities to discover his potential. These personal findings, which will appear as one continues to search, will emphasize his individuality. From its crooked clock to the copying machine, from books of etiquette to Shakespeare, our library offers us an oppor- tunity to investigate that which interests each of us. Aroused by curiosity, each of us, with a restless and constantly in- quiring mind, will learn why he is unique. William J. Dooley With Mr. Dooley’s careful appraisal, we are offered a varied selection of literature. 34 Physical Education Department The body must be repaired and supported if we would preserve the mind in all its vigor.” Pliny the Younger, Epistles Teaching the student to volley and serve, dribble and shoot, and push-up and sit-up is not the primary concern or worth of the Physical Education Department. More valuable is the lesson in citizenship that the course imparts to each student by instilling in him the importance of cooperation and competition. Through a wide range of activities, the youth have the opportunity to use their time and energies efficiently and constructively. Underneath the pain of leg-raising and squat thrusts and the dread of showers, there is knowledge that our gym teachers, in their con- cern for both our physical and mental welfare, are helping to develop our bodies, to strengthen our minds. But everybody likes the way I give out towels! J. Robert Paul John J. Conway Athletic Director Marco J. Landon Miss Elsie Studley 35 — v 1 Arthur S. This is one of the most perplexing questions we face today. Our new's is filled w'ith reports of demonstrations, w'ar and starving mil- lions. We seek to avoid past mistakes, yet in the unknown years before us, the only certainty is change and the need for continual adaptation. In order to preserve the moral and spiritual values w'hich ' we cherish and to avoid previous errors, we shall have to face the future with open minds and the skills necessary for intelligent action. Our social sciences department cannot solve the w'orld’s most pressing, problems, but it tries to provide a practical background through definitions, transparencies of current events, informal discussion, essay tests, theses, and other methods equally familiar to us. Above all, this department seeks to promote understanding, respect for one’s fellow man and an active sense of responsibility. These are the keys to a happier and more successful world for all. We must provide the world with the answers. Are the answers blowin’ in the wind” all around us waiting to be seized and used?
