His experience, his creativity, his craftsmanship are embodied in his art. Overcoming the frustrations of his imperfections, he strives to create a work of art in which the tiny bits of color, beautiful in themselves, fit together to form the fin- ished piece. Our class is like a mosaic, with each of us an artist contrib- uting his personality, his ideas, as well as his ideals . . . HI . , And as an artist gains more inspiration the harder he works . . . And the final effect of his work is of individual pieces coming to- gether to form a unified ivhole, as we have come together to create the mosaic that is our class. Dr. Robert H. McCarn Superintendent Of Schools With confidence in the young people of Fitch- burg, Dr. Robert H. McCarn continues to display genuine enthusiasm for our future, concern for our problems, and respect for our achievements. Responsibly aware of educational and cultural changes within the city and the state, he takes an active part in our curriculum and activities. His attendance at assemblies and in our class- rooms, his guidance as production consultant in our musicals, and his recognition of our ac- complishments demonstrate his dedication to us. By his trust and support he encourages us to do our best. !8 Miss Madeline M. Mrs. Irene Karkos Miss Linda Lawrence Business Requires Intensive Training Today the business community is expanding faster and faster as in- creasingly newer methods of business administration, technology, and sales- manship are being employed. These sophisticated techniques require well- educated and skilled personnel to use them to the greatest advantage, so that business, a vital element in our industrial society, may fulfill its economic potential. To meet this need, we turn to our schools. Inspiring interest and providing a solid education in the fundamental concepts and constantly improved methods, schools must continue to satisfy the requirements of the business world our generation will be directing. Then, as international trade becomes freer and freer, there may be no limit to the business opportunities today's graduates will enjoy in the future. A human being is an entity possessing emotion, curiosity, intel- ligence, integrity, and a sense of ethics — an entity who thinks. As young adults, it is in school that we have the greatest opportunity to develop these qualities to the fullest potential. Besides teaching us the essentials of grammar so that we may better communicate with our fel- lowmen, our English instructors expose us to the best literature from mankind's history. In a sense, their basic function is to make us more complete human beings by encouraging us to appreciate the ethical les- sons in literary masterpieces, in addition to making us aware of the why and the how of life in our society and how we may react to future crises. The aim is not to produce great philosophers or intellectuals but to show us how to comprehend ourselves as individuals and to un- derstand our hearts and minds and develop them to their highest point for greatness, for nobility — for humanity. A Miss Lillian M. Taylor Department Head Stephen Economides Bruce Nattinville David Moskal Leonard J. Tashman Foreign language — you better believe it! Language Studies Encourage World Unity Diversity in customs and ideals has long been an obstacle to in- ternational unity. With expanding communication systems, however, international involvement has become a reality. Opportunities for travel have acquainted our citizens with many other countries and enriched their knowledge of foreign cultures. Through an under- standing of the languages and customs of others, we can more fully appreciate the development of our own heritage. As we strive for world unity, we must continue our study of foreign languages, for only through an exchange of ideas can we join one world effort for peace and prosperity. Teaching requires great physical endurance. 29 Guidance Offers Plans For The Expanded educational opportunities have opened millions of new jobs to today's youth. With the easier availability of a college education or of many kinds of vocational training, an individual finds many more vocational opportunities within his reach than he would have found fifty or even twenty years ago. In addition to the number and variety of jobs today, the employment situation is made more complex as some jobs become obsolete while other jobs come more into demand. Because of this complexity, vocational and college guidance has become a necessity. High-school guidance departments are using techniques employed by professional job-counseling services to advise those seeking careers. Equipped with data on employment trends, guidance specialists, after testing an individual for special interests and attitudes, can suggest appropriate edu- cational and vocational programs. Thus, with the benefit of excellent guidance, students entering the work world or higher institutions of learning can satisfy their personal need for fulfillment and eventually contribute most effectively to society. Nicholas Montesion ure Reginald H. Quinn Department Head Andrew J. Karkos Vi rginia M. McDermott 30 Total concentration by Barbara Brown emphasizes the need to study. William J. Dooley Knowledge Gained Through Literature All the known world is influenced by books. A wide knowledge in many areas is essential in today's rapidly changing world. The opportunity to read and gain knowledge is at our fingertips, if we will take advantage of it. The library provides an extensive range of information in a vast number of subjects from which students can build a founda- tion to project the ideals and beliefs of a new genera- tion. It is our duty to learn literature so that we can guide our future actions and insure a world of peace. So that's where Mr. Dooley hides his Playboys! The Substitute Award of the Year goes to ... 31 Mathematics — The Foundation For Modern Research Numbers, specific, and systematic, form the intricate and ever-broadening study of mathematics. As an understanding of our number system and its applications increases, we become better equipped to probe our universe, for every aspect of science is based upon the fundamentals of mathematics. Scientists, now specializing in specific areas of their field, are exploring each mystery more and more meticulously and are continually relying on mathematical principles. Through this unity we have realized the possibility of space exploration and carried out tremendous experiments successfully. Yet, in the field of mathematics loom many obscurities. Only through con- centrated study can we eliminate these obscurities and pave the way to even greater knowledge. With a solid understanding of the mechanics of mathematics, we are prepared to accept that challenge and to contribute to the progression of mathematical research. Nicholas G. Ruberti Department Head Miss Louise Ertie 'Save your Confederate dollars — the South will rise again.' 32 33 A dedicated teacher imparts some of his knowledge to his students. Russell R. Cook Department Head LA. Encourages Pride And Creativity Behind the simple physical representations of the Industrial Arts Department (the violent steel saws in the noisy carpentry shop, the air of quiet creativity in the arts-and-crafts room) there is an idea that the instructors are trying to transmit to their students — pride in manual skill. Men who can handle tools with ability and who can instill their imaginations in the work of their hands are rare and valuable in a world too dependent on pushbutton machines. The in- dividual who can feel the satisfaction and great pride resulting from knowledge of manual arts and the skill to put that knowledge to a constructive use has something that very few people today pos- sess— a mature responsibility and the ability to meet the challenge of a rushing, complex society. It is this responsibility that will send students out into society more confident. Whether they pursue careers in the technological fields or not, they will have a good start for success and personal satisfaction. Erkki Koutonen John S. Lukas William Michaels Louis Romano 34 Today's Society Seeks Physical Fitness In an age which is steadily decreasing the necessity for strenuous exercise in transportation, johs, and other facets of daily life, we must apply increasingly more conscious effort to maintain physical fitness. Today, the first requirement is that we educate ourselves on what is needed for better physical health. In fulfilling this need, our schools, with the help of a national council on physical fitness, are striving not only to educate youth concerning the requirements for better health and physical condition, but also to train youth in healthful habits of exercise and co-ordination. Learning at an early age how enjoyable exercise can be in sports such as basketball, skating, volleyball, swimming, or tennis, an individual will be more apt to continue a program of exercise as he grows older. Thus, we are taking the first step towards lasting physical fitness — a necessity if we are to gain the fullest benefits from our modern, automated society. John J. Conway Mrs. Lina I. Science Shapes Society The futuristic era of ease and marvel foreseen by many science fiction writers is fast approaching reality in relation to our rapidly expanding technology. Science courses all over the United States similar to those at Fitchburg High School are designed to stimulate and educate those envisioning young people who will shape the en- vironment of tomorrow. One of the most fascinating and promising fields to be developed is that of atomic energy. X-ray machines used for treating cancer, for discovering the location of blood clots, or for determining the extent of damaged bones are but a singular example of the use of atomic rays. Furnaces fueled by atomic transformations can be used to create electricity arid to purify water for consumption. Plastics treated atomically can be made to achieve whatever qualities desir- able. Atomic energy will most probably propel the first interplanetary space flight. So long as individuals of education, imagination, and courage are available, the list of uses for atomic energy is unending. Douglas Damon Ronald F. Grautski Leslie 0. Social Science Examines Cultural Growth We are involved in a Renaissance — a reawakening to the ideals and principles formerly rejected but recently considered by so- ciety. People are rising in rebellion today, crying out for recognition of their beliefs. We are caught in this whirlwind of protest, and only we can take the necessary action to calm it. Perhaps this revolt is the key to many of our problems. Perhaps it is only intensifying them and creating new difficulties. We must make our decision and reorganize our society, but first we must be capable of accepting responsibility. Each generation has faced turmoil and employed a variety of suggestions in search of a solution. Let us make a foundation of our ancestors' experience and build upon this foundation a rostrum from which we may project a new hope for peace and security. 38 James T. Angelos Harold L. Flynn How's your liook shot? Vocational Skills Demanded For Progress Little more than ten years ago, the only evidence of manned or even unmanned space flights could be found in science fiction books. Yet now, there is a distinct possibility that our graduation year, 1969, will see American men landing on the moon! If we have advanced this far tech- nologically in only ten years, imagine what we may see within the next fifty years! The awesome space spectacles which we have already wit- nessed represented the efforts of thousands of men, each proficient in the skills of his job. Regarding our future, which is approaching deceptively fast, we realize that a major challenge of our time will be to fulfill the increasing demand for individuals highly skilled in using and developing the technology of their chosen fields. As technology and specialization increase, however, we must take greater care to provide for the intellectual and cultural needs of our workmen and specialists. With these challenges met, we can only guess at the technological feats which will be made possible by the voca- tional skills of our generation. George B. Spires Vocational Director A. This room is as tastefully done as I am. m The Red and Gray is the most important joint effort of our student body. By contributing material for publication, by working on the various staffs to produce an appealing, meaningful magazine three times a year, or simply by buying copies, the stu- dents of the different classes not only grow a little closer as a single group but create a representation of our school that expresses the best that is in us, what concerns us, what we do, and how we do it. The Red and Gray encourages the writers among us to print their works, the artists to exhibit their drawings, and students in general to express their opinions or introduce themselves to their classmates through the Personals column. It permits us to know each other and our school better. The members of the various staffs derive the greatest benefit. Our creative imaginations, ingen- uity, and just plain hard work result in something of which we can be justly proud. Our adventures in last minute rushes for advertising and for material, the sore spots and the triumphs, the anticipation with which we open each issue — all this experience in journalism, we will not forget. FHS rrLaugh-In Provides Impetus For Victory Over Leominster Fitchburg Fats and his boys do away with the Leominster Mob. if Cross Country Under the excellent coaching of Mr. Erkki Koutonen, the Red and Gray harriers rolled to an impressive 7-1 season. The climax of the season came when Fitchburg's team nipped Keene, N.H., last year's runner-up in the New England Championship. Victories were tallied over Nar- ragansett, Nashua, Notre Dame, Leominster, and St. Ber- nard's. For the tenth straight year the Red and Gray won the Lunenburg Invitational. With the excellent coaching of Mr. Koutonen was coupled the fine running ability of Jake Ward and Steve Thibault. Because of this combination, our runners were able to cap- ture places in the Knights of Columbus, the Wachusett In- vitational, the District Ill's, and the N.C.M.C. conference meets. These two boys also scored in the state meet in Boston. With some fine underclassmen returning next year, Coach Koutonen is looking forward to another successful season. Where's FAT MAC? Swi imming New head Coach Vince Herring began the '68-'69 season with a successful outlook and a promising team. Although there were a number of star swimmers, the Raiders definitely lacked depth. They were always able to tally a good number of points in a meet, but they never had enough back-up strength. Co-Captains Steve Holt and Rick Haudel showed excellent form when they broke seven long-standing individual records. Along with the fine swimming abilities of the entire squad, Fitchburg was lucky to find Vince Herring after losing a tremendous coach in Mr. Christie. Mike Levin practices his rhythmic breathing. Steve Holt gets the go from Rod Stocking. 69 I Chris Petrides eludes Nashua with his Albanian finesse. Basketball With the competent coaching of a dedicated Ted Paulauskas and the reliable performance of the en- tire bench, the Raiders were able to build a squad based on team effort. Through a well-executed at- tack F.H.S. dealt St. Peter's a re- sounding blow to enliven our spirit. In a mid-season clash we overpowered the mistakenly rated No. 1 St. Bernard's 81-58. Many times we were at a definite height disadvantage but by determined practice and spirited play the bas- ketball team played characteristi- cally superior ball. Hockey Team This season the hockey team found itself facing one of the toughest schedules in recent years. Although the squad was small and inexperienced, they played well against more skillful and more experienced opponents such as Manchester Central, Nashua, and Cushing Academy. Aggressive and determined, the members of the team maintained high spirits and enthusiasm for each game. Jn spite of the season's record, the boys never lacked pride in themselves. Fierce action during Manchester Central game finds Dave Gauvin making a necessary check. First Row: R. Huhtala, J. Guercio, B. Damien, J. Bourque, G. Stevens, L. LaRoche, J. Ward, S. Thibault, J. We regis- tered solid victories over Leominster, Wor- cester North, Marlborough, and St. John's, losing only to a fine Worcester Doherty Club. Essentially, our success was accomplished by the dedicated efforts of a unified team. Highlights of the season were the achieve- ments of Leo LaRoche and John Osborne. Leo captured first place in the shot put at the All State meet with a heave of 53' John, who developed the high jumping form of Dick Fosbury, broke the school record with a jump of 5' 10 With the return of many promising trackmen, Coach Gastonguay is hopeful of another rewarding season. In conclusion, we have seen that our mosaic is significant not only as an individual composi- tion, but also as one of the many elements contributing to the total view of our world culture. Upon realizing how we fit into the pat- tern of society, we now see that it is in a state of constant motion and change. To preserve the con- tinuity of this pattern is the chal- lenge facing the class of 1970. May each member of their class offer his intellect and his spirit to the artistic creation of the new mosaic. And may their year bring them reason for pride in their accomplishment. 194 BUILDING fx WEBCO MATER 195 591-593 Park Ave. Worcester, Mass. 753-3433 PIZZA— DELI— SUBS Where Quality Excels DRIVE IN PARKING .118 River Street Fitchburg, Mass. 342-0843 Roy's Texaco You Are Welcome At Our Station 267 Mechanic Street OtdMf Restaurant — Cocktail Lounge Village Store Delicious Yankee Food in a Rustic Setting Serving Continuously Every Day, 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Westminster, Mass.
