Industrial Arts Department The industrial arts program specializes in training stu- dents in technical and industrial fields. This is achieved through study, planning, and construction experience in laboratories and shops. The program seeks to prepare skilled workers for society as well as to enable students to understand and deal intelli- gently with their industrial environment. Also emphasized by the department is the need for safety and for training in a student's particular field, Russell R. Cook Department Head Erkki Koutonen John S. Who says I have dishpan hands? Physical Education Department Throughout history physical education programs have been fashioned to fit the cuhure of the people. Our society today has been made extremely conscious of the need for physical fitness. Because we are living a more automated life, not conducive to exercise and extensive physical activity, programs are being devel- oped which stress the importance of physical education. State laws are being passed requiring schools to extend the time allotted to physical education, and federal programs are encouraging wide participation in physical fitness activities. Although Fitchburg High has a very active varsity spxjrts schedule, the core of the physical education program is aimed at developing each individual to his greatest potential. Through calis- thenics, gymnastics, forms of dance and sports, the body becomes a smooth running mechanism, and the mind functions with keen awareness. John J. Conway Mrs. Lina I. Korpi Marco J.
