Nicholas G. Ruberti Department Head Mathematics Department Mathematics possesses not only truth, but supreme beauty-a beauty cold and austere, like that of sculpture, without appeal to any part of our weaker nature, sub- limely pure, and capable of a stem perfection such as only the greatest can show. — Ber- trand Russell The beauty of mathematics is illustrated in its simplicity. Mathematics expresses in simplified form complex ideas. Upon these concepts we have based complete areas of science that will aid us in the exploration of space — the ocean of tomorrow. If we are ever to chart the infinite reaches of this last frontier, we must have a pure and perfected form of mathematics. Although specialization in one field is now essential, the study of the world around us, as well as the world beyond us, requires at the minimum a background in mathemat- ics. Because of this ever-increasing need, the Mathematics Department of Fitchburg High School presents the basic concepts of mathematics so that the student will have a knowledge of the rudiments of mathematics when he begins to further his education and choose a field of speciahzation.
