Mathematics expresses in simplified form complex ideas. Upon these concepts we have based complete areas of science that will aid us in the exploration of space — the ocean of tomorrow. If we are ever to chart the infinite reaches of this last frontier, we must have a pure and perfected form of mathematics. Although specialization in one field is now essential, the study of the world around us, as well as the world beyond us, requires at the minimum a background in mathemat- ics. Because of this ever-increasing need, the Mathematics Department of Fitchburg High School presents the basic concepts of mathematics so that the student will have a knowledge of the rudiments of mathematics when he begins to further his education and choose a field of speciahzation.
