John C. Baimas Department Head Foreign Language Department In our modern times speech is becoming the chief distinguishing mark of nations, and, therefore, a knowledge of more than one lan- guage is of greater importance than ever before. The ability to under- stand and to communicate is a valuable tool in our ever progressing world. Our language Department enables students to achieve a thorough training in various language skills. Of the languages offered, Spanish and German are taught on a three-year basis and French in a four-year program. These courses develop an appreciation of the aesthetic and intellectual qualities of other literatures and a serious insight into the cultures of the nations concerned. Latin, a major classical language, is taught on a four-year basis, including an Advanced Placement Program. Through this extensive and complete study, a student acquires not only a knowledge of an ancient vocabulary, but also a better understanding of his own lan- guage. Mrs. Carol G. Adams WiUiam J. Boyle Heaven to earth intercom. 16

Guidance Department In today's rapidly changing world every student must have early, frequent, and systematic appraisals of his abilities. The guidance program meets student needs in many ways. Through varied testing and personal consultations the department helps each in- dividual to shape his goals and to assume the responsibility for self direction. Guidance is an important part of the total educational program in relation to the requirements in advanced education and the opportunities in the world of work. Helping the youth at Fitchburg High School select and enter colleges and occupations is the function of the Guidance Department under the direction of Mr. Reginald H. Quinn and his able staff who might well pride themselves in their endeavors. Reginald H. Quinn Andrew J. Karkos Counselor and student work together to select the right college. Virginia M. McDermott The effective counsellor must keep informed of opportunities open to students. 18
