English Department How vast and limitless are the doors opened by the study of English! There is no other area of learning so essential to the total program of our studies, or of such value to the student's personal, social, and occupational life. Our free democratic society places heavy responsibihties upon its citizens. English courses develop the necessary skills in logical thmking, critical reading and hstening, as well as creative expression. Training in the appreciation of hterature develops the student's aesthetic sense and directs him to a mature understanding of human nature. Our English Department, under the direction of Miss Lillian M. Taylor, offers a program designed to serve the needs of each individual student and geared to provide the highest possible type of English experience.

John C. Baimas Department Head Foreign Language Department In our modern times speech is becoming the chief distinguishing mark of nations, and, therefore, a knowledge of more than one lan- guage is of greater importance than ever before. The ability to under- stand and to communicate is a valuable tool in our ever progressing world. Our language Department enables students to achieve a thorough training in various language skills. Of the languages offered, Spanish and German are taught on a three-year basis and French in a four-year program. These courses develop an appreciation of the aesthetic and intellectual qualities of other literatures and a serious insight into the cultures of the nations concerned. Latin, a major classical language, is taught on a four-year basis, including an Advanced Placement Program. Through this extensive and complete study, a student acquires not only a knowledge of an ancient vocabulary, but also a better understanding of his own lan- guage. Mrs. Carol G. Adams WiUiam J. Boyle Heaven to earth intercom. 16
