BOULDER 1968 . . . Zkrougk the Cooking Qlass Published by the class of 1968 FITCHBURG HIGH SCHOOL UNITI SUMUS FORTISSIMI Fitchburg, Massachusetts FOREWORD (L. We, as a class, ■7 fully realize our responsibilities as future leaders of this chaotic, changing world. We recognize also the seriousness and dedication necessary in preparing ourselves to undertalce this challenge, yet, life viewed too rationally, stripped of all illusion, can appear grim, disturbing and uninviting. Jt is our belief that laughter is the sanctuary between hope and despair, Zherefore, our Aliee'' deals with a type of nonsense not to be talcen too seriously, but rather to be placed within those realms where memories merge with childhood dreams, Zhere's a shade of AHee in us all So , , , trounce - Bounce - Mave anotlier mushroom - follow the white rabbit to discover the 'door with the golden Icey, TABLE OF CO] TE] TS T)edicatm 4 MmiHistrat'm 6 faculty Organizations 87 Sports 49 Activities 71 Seniors $5 Advertisements 161 DEDICATION When a teacher constantly strives for professional improve- ment, displays conscientious loyalty to the highest standards, and inspires students with a desire for education and learning, he commands respect. Moreover when he has a genuine concern for the welfare of his students as people and is blessed with the gift of humor, he wins friendship and affection. Mr. Bruce P. Nattinville, our class advisor, is a teacher of such stature. As our advisor, Mr. Nattinville has not only been aware of our capabilities as young adults, but also has respected us as such, conferring upon us trust and responsibility. Through his unobtrusive guidance and interest, we have achieved success. Recognizing that he is deserving of our boundless gratitude and hoping in some small way to manifest our appreciation, we the class of 1968, dedicate our Boulder to Mr. Nattinville, an inspiring teacher, a devoted advisor, and an invaluable friend. To the Graduating Class: In accordance with the trend of the times and the theme of the day, let me urge you to have the vision to understand espe- cially this one great principle, of seeing greatness and goodness in other people, not those in some far off, distant land, but rather in those who are our friends and neighbors with whom we daily associate, whether they may live in a hovel or a mansion, a ranch house, a farm, a trailer or a cabin, whether they are light-skinned or dark-skinned, native born or foreign bom, rich or poor, edu- cated or uneducated, whether they be truck drivers or college professors, scientists or artists, farmers or factory owners. This matters not. They are your fellow men, who are made and fashioned by the hand of God to His own image and likeness. The power to remain true to your character is one of the secrets of greatness. To hold on to your ideals despite tempta- tions, to abide by the law though others violate it, to stand alone by what is right despite the pull of the crowd, to pursue your purpose despite all obstacles and difficulties - this is the meaning of perseverance. Don't give up, don't quit, and all your defeats will turn to victories. Remember that life is a struggle and a challenge, but because of this it is worth living. You are told about the vast world which you are to encounter. You will find, however, that it is not so vast after all. The world in which most of us actually live and breathe and have our being from birth to death is relatively small. This world will be influenced immensely by your example and your life, what you do, what you say, how you think and how you act. Remember that you can change the world for better or for worse by the power of your personaUty, the kind- ness and charm of your character, the strength of your will and the wisdom of your vision. The world needs each of you as never before. Give of your- self, the best you have, and the best will come back to you. Sincerely, Dr. Robert H. McCam PRINCIPAL Graduating from Boston College with a B.S. in the social sciences, Mr. Goode received his M.A. in education from Fitchburg State College. Although he has been with Fitchburg High for only three years, our principal has long been associated with the youth of Fitchburg as a coach, teacher, and princi- pal. Mr. Goode, as a leader, is concerned with every particular aspect of F.H.S. life. We have seen him at assemblies, at football games, at concerts, at the Sen- ior Reception, and at all activities in which his stu- dents are interested. Mr. Goode has stressed scholarship as the main purpose of education, but he has emphasized also the importance of athletics, of the arts, and of social activities. Our personal development has been influenced greatly by Mr. Goode. He has directed our school lives with a firm but kind hand. As we reminisce over our years at Fitchburg High, we shall remember him as an extra-ordinary leader, counselor, and person. Stanley A. Goode 9 acuity 1 Business Department Since our world is becoming more and more competitive as years go by, it is necessary that students going into business be fully pre- pared to meet daily challenges. Our Business Department, with modern and u{ to-date facilities, excellently trains young people in business procedures and prepares them for careers in secretarial and clerical fields. A program is offered which enables students to work every other week in a school office. This practice gives students invaluable busi- ness experience which can be used as a reference when full-time employment is sought. Many of our business students further their education in business and secretarial schools while others obtain full-time employment im- mediately after graduation. Miss Madehne M. There is no other area of learning so essential to the total program of our studies, or of such value to the student's personal, social, and occupational life. Our free democratic society places heavy responsibihties upon its citizens. English courses develop the necessary skills in logical thmking, critical reading and hstening, as well as creative expression. Training in the appreciation of hterature develops the student's aesthetic sense and directs him to a mature understanding of human nature. Our English Department, under the direction of Miss Lillian M. Taylor, offers a program designed to serve the needs of each individual student and geared to provide the highest possible type of English experience. 15 John C. Baimas Department Head Foreign Language Department In our modern times speech is becoming the chief distinguishing mark of nations, and, therefore, a knowledge of more than one lan- guage is of greater importance than ever before. The ability to under- stand and to communicate is a valuable tool in our ever progressing world. Our language Department enables students to achieve a thorough training in various language skills. Of the languages offered, Spanish and German are taught on a three-year basis and French in a four-year program. These courses develop an appreciation of the aesthetic and intellectual qualities of other literatures and a serious insight into the cultures of the nations concerned. Latin, a major classical language, is taught on a four-year basis, including an Advanced Placement Program. Through this extensive and complete study, a student acquires not only a knowledge of an ancient vocabulary, but also a better understanding of his own lan- guage. Mrs. Carol G. Adams WiUiam J. Boyle Heaven to earth intercom. 16 Guidance Department In today's rapidly changing world every student must have early, frequent, and systematic appraisals of his abilities. The guidance program meets student needs in many ways. Through varied testing and personal consultations the department helps each in- dividual to shape his goals and to assume the responsibility for self direction. Guidance is an important part of the total educational program in relation to the requirements in advanced education and the opportunities in the world of work. Helping the youth at Fitchburg High School select and enter colleges and occupations is the function of the Guidance Department under the direction of Mr. Reginald H. Quinn and his able staff who might well pride themselves in their endeavors. Reginald H. Quinn Andrew J. Karkos Counselor and student work together to select the right college. Virginia M. Within the four walls of our library are books by a host of authors who have set in best order the results of their learning and wisdom for the benefit of the reader. Books on the ruins of the ancient world and the glories of the modem one, up-to-date ency- clopedias, dictionaries, and almanacs are right at the stu- dent's hand. Under the guidance of Mr. WiUiam Dooley, our li- brary has a total volume capacity of 7,700 books and is considered the best of its size in the entire area. William J. Dooley The library serves as a convenient classroom for audio-visual instruction an office for the recording of marks a sanctuary for study . 19 Nicholas G. Ruberti Department Head Mathematics Department Mathematics possesses not only truth, but supreme beauty-a beauty cold and austere, like that of sculpture, without appeal to any part of our weaker nature, sub- limely pure, and capable of a stem perfection such as only the greatest can show. — Ber- trand Russell The beauty of mathematics is illustrated in its simplicity. Mathematics expresses in simplified form complex ideas. Upon these concepts we have based complete areas of science that will aid us in the exploration of space — the ocean of tomorrow. If we are ever to chart the infinite reaches of this last frontier, we must have a pure and perfected form of mathematics. Although specialization in one field is now essential, the study of the world around us, as well as the world beyond us, requires at the minimum a background in mathemat- ics. Because of this ever-increasing need, the Mathematics Department of Fitchburg High School presents the basic concepts of mathematics so that the student will have a knowledge of the rudiments of mathematics when he begins to further his education and choose a field of speciahzation. This is achieved through study, planning, and construction experience in laboratories and shops. The program seeks to prepare skilled workers for society as well as to enable students to understand and deal intelli- gently with their industrial environment. Also emphasized by the department is the need for safety and for training in a student's particular field, Russell R. Cook Department Head Erkki Koutonen John S. Lukas Art is the application of skill vVilliam Michaels with the expression of imagination. 22 Who says I have dishpan hands? Physical Education Department Throughout history physical education programs have been fashioned to fit the cuhure of the people. Our society today has been made extremely conscious of the need for physical fitness. Because we are living a more automated life, not conducive to exercise and extensive physical activity, programs are being devel- oped which stress the importance of physical education. State laws are being passed requiring schools to extend the time allotted to physical education, and federal programs are encouraging wide participation in physical fitness activities. Although Fitchburg High has a very active varsity spxjrts schedule, the core of the physical education program is aimed at developing each individual to his greatest potential. Through calis- thenics, gymnastics, forms of dance and sports, the body becomes a smooth running mechanism, and the mind functions with keen awareness. John J. Conway Mrs. Lina I. Korpi Marco J. Landon What some people won't do Miss Elsie Studley 23 1 Leslie O. Gnffiths Department Head Science Department If man is seeing more clearly into the infinitely small, he is also managing to see more clearly into the great outside universe. Isaac Asimov Since prehistoric ages man has been observing scientific phenomena. Archeologists have uncovered records of early Egyptians who had studied sciences ranging from biology and medicine to astrology. Hippocrates, Galileo, and Michelangelo were but a few pioneers in the study of science. During the centuries which separate us from these modest beginnings, scientific studies and innovations have multiplied several thousand fold. Human beings have been projected through space. Inter-planetary vehicles have landed on other planets. Man has begun to investigate food resources in the world's oceans. He has begun to manufac- ture in laboratories proteins and nucleic acids — the chemicals of hfe. For such advanced studies, a sound background is necessary . Our Science Depart- ment, under the direction of Mr. Leslie Griffiths, prepares today's students for their place in the ever-changing world of science. Miss Helen M. Brown The kids these days are so lazy. Albert G. Chouinard Thomas Crank Happiness is a pnze amoeba and a bug collection. 24 John J. Dillon Department Head Social Science Department This period in history will perhaps be remembered by its revolutions: The riots in Watts which destroyed lives and property; the violence and radicalism, which terrorized the equality marches and protest strikes attended by thou- sands of Americans; the peace demonstrations which question the ideals, morals and rights of government policies at home and abroad, advancements in educa- tion brought about by inspiring instruction for all children and adults; advance- ments toward world-wide peace attained through the efforts of such organizations as our Peace Corps. Today is an era of questioning, seeking, and striving to improve, and to survive in these times one must possess an understanding of people and principles. One must learn from the past to gain from the future. Our Social Science Department presents the basic principles of government and investigates the ages of man and his behavior in society. With such a background, a student has a basis for his future involvement in society. James T. Angelos Harold L. Flynn Whatever happened to those World War I flying aces? Mr. Dillon offers an enlightening word on the problems of today's society 26 27 Vocational Department In this age of computers and satellites, man has become enveloped in the vastly growing field of technology. New advances in technology have brought about changes in industrv that call for skilled personnel. Our Vocational De- partment is helping industry by training Fitchburg High boys for the techno- logical positions that industrial progress has made available. The Vocational School students alternate between classroom studies and practical shop training in auto mechanics, carpentry, electronics, and machine tooling. They thus receive the intellectual background necessary for good citizenship as well as their vocational training. Ernie Lavoie, of the Boulder staff, puts finishing touches on his seismograph project. Contructive criticism offered by Mr. Panek sets prospective electrician straight. 28 Mrs. Kathleen Smith 30 We, the yearbook staff humbly, yet proudly, place into your hands this 1968 edition of The Boulder. May the reflec- tions cast by the light from our looking glass form a spec- trum of each glorious event, each friendship, each hope, and each achievement of the years we have shared together at Fitchburg High School. Gaze intently into its depths, for below its opaque surface lies the true spirit, essence, and humor of the Class of 1968. May it, in the future, serve as a record of our treasured memories and accomplishments. May it provide us with many delightful hours as we hurry along with the White Rabbit. While the rest of the school followed the football games, our runners were pushing and punishing themselves over many rugged miles in practices and meets. There was, however, personal satisfaction for the man who ran his best, whether he finished first or twentieth. Though the team lost the two opening meets to Keene and Narragansett, the harriers won the next five dual meets, placed second in the Wachusett Invitational, finished first in the Ashby Bicentennial Road Race, and won the ninth con- secutive Lunenburg Invitational. Fitchburg ended the season with a seventh place finish out of thirty-five schools in the Class B State Meet. First Row: J. Ward. D. Manon, S. Stacy, R. Meehan. P. Conroy, K. D. Flynn, M. Lepp, T. Aquamen overpowered Boston English, Leominster, Gardner, and East Longmeadow. Much credit was due to Coach Bob Christie for his selfless dedication to our team. Neither he nor the team was dis- couraged by the exhausting workouts each morning before school. Against East Longmeadow the relay team of Steve Smith. Rick Haudel, Don Benere, and Mike McNamara broke the 400 yard relay record, while Tom Progin broke the long standing 400 yard individual record. A proud team can look back to a season which mirrors the persistent drive and en- during ability that Fitchburg High main- tains in competition. HOCKEY Our hockey team began the season with three straight wins over the Alumni, Lawrence Academy, and Notre Dame before it was defeated by Gushing Academy. The pucksters continued their winning sea- son by tipping Murdock two to one. While allowing the opposing teams only two goals, F. H. S. scored fourteen goals in their four wins. Assists and goals by Rick Bennett and John Ar- senault, hard line checking by Jim Wade, Robert Da- vid, and Bruce Maxim, and unrelenting goaltending by John Arminio combined to make such an outstanding season possible. INDOOR TRACK The indoor track team expressed the same win- ning spirit that had influenced all our 1968 varsity teams. A prosperous season was distinguished by victo- ries over Worcester North, Burncoat, Lunenburg, and Wayland, despite one loss to superior Watch- usett. Against the top competitors in the state, Fitch- burg earned points in the shot put, high jump, and the 1000 yard run at Boston. Seniors Mike DeLibertis, Dave Marion, Don Lo- gan, and Bruce Martines gave noteworthy perform- ances during the track season. With many promising juniors and sophomores returning. Coach Gaston- guay can expect an equally successful season next year. The enthusias- tic cheers of team supporters resound through the gym. The girls' intramural sports program is in full swing. Because there are no varsity sports for girls, the intramurals create intense spirit. In both basketball and volleyball, a large percentage of girls from every class is involved, making these games a vital and necessary part of the girls' athletic program. Unbiased sideline officials keep the game honest. 68 ACTIVITIES JUNIOR PROM Originality and color highlighted the Junior Prom of the Class of 1968. As the couples entered at ' GO, they did not collect two hundred dollars, but, instead, they found themselves surrounded by the fantasy of It's All in the Game. While walking down the Boardwalk, past No Parking, through the Jail. and onto Baltic Avenue, the guests them- selves were transformed into players of the game. Along the back wall grew money trees which created the illusion that we, the Class of 1968, had achieved the impossible dream. On each table 3 small train chugged down the criss-crossing tracks, car- rying the couples deeper into the world of make-believe. The rhythmical strains of Frankie Dee and his orchestra provided a background for the game as the couples danced under a canopy of streamers fashioned in alternating shades of pink. No one lost! Everyone was a winner playing our enchant- ing game of Monopoly. Class officers lead the grand march. Where'd the kids go? This presentation of a one-act play by each class has become an institution of Fitchburg High School, and is one of the most eagerly anticipated events of the school year. During our years here, the Class of 1968 has presented three noteworthy plays: Three on a Bench; Gadgets and A Cup of Tea. We acknowledge the time and energy which the casts spent perfecting their performances. Laughter, fun, and good times, the rewards of their achievements, were never lacking. Each performer will always remember stepping onto the hot, brightly lighted stage for that final curtain call. The make up, prop, and backstage crews were a vital and invaluable part of the total performance, giving unselfishly of their time to prepare the final production. As in any performance, the greatest responsibility for all three plays fell upon the directors. With our deepest gratitude we thank our directors Miss Buffinton and Mrs. Gallant for their patience and dedication. 'THREE thousand leucocytes?' Quick. Maude! Here comes our tram!' FlTCHBURG High SCHOOL feci cjEi -iF - • v FlTCHBURG ' '-f • MASSACHUSETTS To the Class of '68: We leave Fitchburg High School with the memories of our past four years reflected in this yearbook. Our first two years we were together as a class, but without unity. As juniors, we became aware of the importance of class activities in forming our class personality. The Junior Prom, It's All in the Game, ex- pressed the originality and determination which characterize our class. How can we forget the ceiling that took so long to build, then admired by those who had accomplished the feat; the relay and basketball game, the much desired perfection we hoped to achieve; then our masculine hero, Francis Fitchburg, flying across the stage to crush Leominster? As a class, we have attained scholastic as well as ath- letic recognition. Whether in the class room or on the field, the Class of '68 has brought honor to Fitchburg High School. Tomorrow these joyful accomplishments will be behind us, but they will give us the strength to face the difficult task of being an adult. It seems that our genera- tion has been severely critical of the adult: we think we know what the adult should be, a subject of serious concern to our generation — to find the ideal self. To become the ideal adult, we must be responsible: we must allow ourselves no compromise that will dwarf the stature of our true selves. It is my wish that all of you may find your special purpose in life and that you may have the health and vision to carry it to fulfillment. 86 Anita Louise Adams Good sense of humor . . . compatible . . . loquacious and easy going . . . enjoys skiing and horseback riding . . . JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS Vice-President, Mona Hachey: President, Thomas Digeronimo; Secretary, Marsha Bennett; Treasurer, Chris Petrides As we step away from Alice's looking glass, the joys, anxieties, victories, and defeats we have shared as a class crystalize. We pause to think, to remember. We have come this far united, but from here our varied pathways will radiate in all directions, and only memories will remain. As you, the Class of 1969, find yourselves united before your own looking glass, may you see reflected the same spirit and purpose which have characterized us. We wish you success.
