John J. Dillon Department Head Social Science Department The Social Science Department, under the direction of Mr. John Dillon, offers courses in United States History, Ancient History, World History, Government, and Sociology. In these courses the student learns about the development of his nation, the values of society, and the responsibilities of citizenship. Through the study of history, it is hoped that the student will develop an understanding and an appreciation for other cultures, as well as his own. A study of the history' and the government of the United States is essential for the high school student today, for it is he who will choose the leaders of tomorrow and shape our governmental policies. Vocational Department The aim of the Vocational High School is to prepare students in a particular field of work by supplying technical knowledge and developing necessary skills. Occupational training is an important part of the total program. The students at- tend classes one week and on the alternate week they attend the different shops including auto mechanic, carpentry, electrical, and machine. Those who complete the Vocational Course receive a diploma from Fitchburg High School and a trade certificate which qualifies them to begin employment immediately after graduation. The students of the Vocational School are a part of Fitchburg High School and can participate in all extra-curricular and athletic activities.
