Miss Lillian M. Taylor Department Head English Department The English Department, under the direction of Miss Lillian M. Taylor, seeks to aid the student in speaking, writing, and appreciating good English. In addition to the regular English classes in the College Preparatory Course, there are honors divisions for outstanding seniors, juniors, and sophomores; and for the first time this year there is an Advanced Place- ment Program in English. In addition to the regular English classes in the Business and General Course curricula there are now three courses in Basic English for juniors, sophomores, and freshmen. In these courses the student is also introduced to English literature — a literature that is unequaled in variety, quantity, and general excellence. Through this study and interpretation of literature, the student is encouraged to study and to think logically and critically, to express himself creatively, and to develop an appreciation for his own literature. Thus, he becomes more aware of his own cultural heritage and begins to have a better under- standing of man. Thomas J. Angelopoulos Mr. James P. Benedict Miss Ruth Boyer Miss Joan Buffinton Edward Gastonguay Richard Hodges Miss Irene Holland Bernard A. Horgan

Foreign Language Department John C. Baimas Department Head Our Foreign Language Department, under the guidance of its new Department Head, Mr. John C. Baimas, helps make us aware of our ever- changing world by teaching us the importance of internationalism. To achieve this understanding, we must not only learn the languages of other peoples, but also learn of their customs, their geography, and their history. For this reason, well-rounded programs are available to the students in French, Spanish, Italian and German. French is taught in a four-year program while Spanish, Italian, and German are offered in three-year programs. To provide the student with a classical background by acquainting him with man's heritage, and to give him a strong foundation for future language study, Latin is offered in a four-year program. This year the Latin course has been expanded with an Advanced Placement Program for its exceptional students. William J. Boyle Mrs. Kathr)'n B.
