Text from Pages 1 - 236 of the 1967 volume:

Dedication Mr. Leslie Griffiths, as adviser to the Class of 1967, has been an understanding friend. Dur- ing the past tu'O years, his interest in us has been immeasurable. By working closely with our class officers and the chairmen of various class func- tions, Mr. Griffiths has demonstrated clearly his devotion to the seniors. His ability to accept us as young adults and to communicate with us on this basis has made him a natural choice as ad- viser. We, the Class of 1967, feel we can never begin sufficiently to repay Mr. Griffiths' many kind endeavors in our behalf. By dedicating our yearbook to Mr. Griffiths, we have tried to dem- onstrate our gratitude and warm feeling for him. Mr. Griffiths confers with class officers. Dr. Robert H. McCarn Superintendent of Schools Dr. Robert H. McCarii received his A. B. Dei;ree aim laude from Holy Cross College in 1929. Since that time he has received an M. Ed. Decree from Boston College Graduate School of Educatitm and an honorary D. Litt. Degree from St. Francis College. Devoting much of his time to organizations and groups concerned with educational and ail- tural pursuits. Dr. McCam presently is serving as President of the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents and is on the Board of Directors of the Fitchburg Art Museum and the Community Action Committee. He is active in the American Association of School Adminis- trators, as well as in the New England AsstKia- tion of School Superintendents. Dr. McCarn has always shown genuine concern for the academic and extra-curricular achieve- ments of the students of Fitchburg High School. Under his guidance Fitchburg High School has continued to excel. Stanley A. Goode Mr. Goode confers with Mr. McDonough ■ To the Class of 1967: You cannot predict with certainty what life holds in store for you in the way of changes and challenges. You do not know what the future may demand of you in the way of skill and understanding. Nor do you know what the future may offer in the way of opportunity for fulfillment and enjoyment. Life is a long, rough road and the prizes go to those with tenacity, durability, resiliency and the capacity to pick themselves up after they have taken a fall. You know now that you have the ability. Have faith in your long-term capacity to use this ability constructively. Do not let that faith be shaken by momentary setbacks. We here at Fitchburg High School have tried to prepare you to face this reality; now it is up to you to explore the various fields in which you might exercise your skill and judgment. You should continue developing the capacity of your mind to reach out, to create, to aspire, to be aware, to dream, to love and to conceive a moral order. You are the only ones who can put such a pattern together — your life. Let it be a life that has dignity and meaning. As you keep these thoughts in mind, may I extend my best wishes for personal success and happiness to each and every one of you. Sincerely yoius, Principal Francis A. Carbone Science Co-ordinator is i Martin J. McDonough Physical Education Director George B. Spires Vocational Director Carlton R. Thorne Director of Music PAGULTY II r Miss Madeline M. Donovan Department Head Business Department In our competitive society there are many rewarding positions opened to those trained in the various business sciences. Our Business Department, headed by Miss Madehne M. Donovan, seeks to prepare its students for worthwhile careers in the secretarial and clerical fields. Under the Part-Time Program of the department students attend classes for one week, while on alternate weeks they are employed in secretarial work in the School Department or in various school offices. In this way a student gains actual business experience. The Business Office further assists students by finding them employment outside school, as well as helping many select business and secretarial schools where they can further their education. Our Business Department offers its students the proper preparation and guidance necessary for employment in the field of business. Joseph J. Buono Miss Augusta Cottone Did I type that? Miss Eleanor Dinkin Miss Maryann DiPalma Miss Janice Donabedian 12 Mrs. Pauline J. Rodriquenz D. Robert Romano Mrs. Lucille Sullivan Thomas J. Treac)' 13 Miss Lillian M. Taylor Department Head English Department The English Department, under the direction of Miss Lillian M. Taylor, seeks to aid the student in speaking, writing, and appreciating good English. In addition to the regular English classes in the College Preparatory Course, there are honors divisions for outstanding seniors, juniors, and sophomores; and for the first time this year there is an Advanced Place- ment Program in English. In addition to the regular English classes in the Business and General Course curricula there are now three courses in Basic English for juniors, sophomores, and freshmen. In these courses the student is also introduced to English literature — a literature that is unequaled in variety, quantity, and general excellence. Through this study and interpretation of literature, the student is encouraged to study and to think logically and critically, to express himself creatively, and to develop an appreciation for his own literature. Thus, he becomes more aware of his own cultural heritage and begins to have a better under- standing of man. Thomas J. Angelopoulos Mr. James P. Benedict Miss Ruth Boyer Miss Joan Buffinton Edward Gastonguay Richard Hodges Miss Irene Holland Bernard A. Horgan Foreign Language Department John C. Baimas Department Head Our Foreign Language Department, under the guidance of its new Department Head, Mr. John C. Baimas, helps make us aware of our ever- changing world by teaching us the importance of internationalism. To achieve this understanding, we must not only learn the languages of other peoples, but also learn of their customs, their geography, and their history. For this reason, well-rounded programs are available to the students in French, Spanish, Italian and German. French is taught in a four-year program while Spanish, Italian, and German are offered in three-year programs. To provide the student with a classical background by acquainting him with man's heritage, and to give him a strong foundation for future language study, Latin is offered in a four-year program. This year the Latin course has been expanded with an Advanced Placement Program for its exceptional students. William J. Boyle Mrs. Kathr)'n B. Kelly Mrs. Yvette Malenfant French class with Mrs. Malenfant Mathematics Department Nicholas G. Ruberti, Department Head i Frances M. Austin From ancient time, a knowledge of mathematics has been established as a basic and necessary' aspect of education. When, however, one con- siders the complex technical advancement of our modern age, mathe- matics gains new importance. Science and industry depend on large numbers of highly skilled technicians, and in order to supply this urgent need, our schools must graduate students skilled in both practical and theoretical mathematics. To fulfill such needs, our Mathematics Department, under the guidance of Mr. Nicholas G. Ruberti, supplies students with an applicable and well- rounded background in the important field of mathematics by offering a curriculum of two years of algebra, one year of advanced algebra, plane geometry, and courses in basic and modern mathematics. James F. Connors 1 Miss Misslin helps to clear up a student's difficulties in Algebra. Mr. Ryan explains a difficult Geometry problem. Reginald H. Quinn Department Head Guidance Department The demands placed upon high school students to attend college or business schools and to choose suitable vocations necessitate a high quality of guidance and counselling. This quality is found in the Guidance De- partment at Fitchburg High School. Through numerous facilities, in the form of tests, catalogues, brochures, and counselling sessions, students may select the courses of study suitable for their present needs and career aspirations. Our guidance personnel, under the direction of Mr. Reginald Quinn, assist the large number of students in becoming well-equipped, well-trained, and useful citizens. Mr. Karkos and Miss McDermott schedule student conferences. Andrew J. Karkos Virginia M. McDermott Nicholas J. Montesion 20 Physical Education Department Physical education is an integral part of the curriculum of any school. Since the mind functions best in a well-disciplined body, a rigid program of calisthenics and sports develops the student physically and prepares him for a more complete, vigorous life. At Fitchburg High School we follow a program designed to aid not only the athletic youth but also the student who may not have the skill and agility of an athlete. By encouraging each student to develop to his full potential, our gym instructors help to emphasize the importance of physical, as well as scholastic, advancement. John J. Conway Pull ! Don't climb. Well, Jack, looks like an epidemic. Science Department The Science Program, directed by Mr. Leslie Griffiths, challenges the students with theories and principles of the great ancient and modem scien- tists. Besides the basic scientific information available to all students, more advanced and comprehensive study is offered to those students planning careers in the field of science. The program is designed to provide each student with more than a mere working knowledge of the subject; it attempts to instill an enthusiasm for and an appreciation of the physical universe and its laws. Leslie O. Griffiths Department Head Helen M. Brown Richard P. Chabot Albert G. Chouinard Mr. Schedin explains lab procedure. 22 Ronald P. Grautski Arthur S. Koykka John J. Dillon Department Head Social Science Department The Social Science Department, under the direction of Mr. John Dillon, offers courses in United States History, Ancient History, World History, Government, and Sociology. In these courses the student learns about the development of his nation, the values of society, and the responsibilities of citizenship. Through the study of history, it is hoped that the student will develop an understanding and an appreciation for other cultures, as well as his own. A study of the history' and the government of the United States is essential for the high school student today, for it is he who will choose the leaders of tomorrow and shape our governmental policies. 'What jars my preserves!' James T. Angelos Mary Clark Mrs. Catharine Flynn i 24 Vocational Department The aim of the Vocational High School is to prepare students in a particular field of work by supplying technical knowledge and developing necessary skills. Occupational training is an important part of the total program. The students at- tend classes one week and on the alternate week they attend the different shops including auto mechanic, carpentry, electrical, and machine. Those who complete the Vocational Course receive a diploma from Fitchburg High School and a trade certificate which qualifies them to begin employment immediately after graduation. The students of the Vocational School are a part of Fitchburg High School and can participate in all extra-curricular and athletic activities. Ellis 26 Industrial Arts Department Under the supervision of Mr. Russell Cook, the industrial arts program specializes in training students in technical and industrial fields. One purpose of this department is to prepare skilled workers for society, as well as to enable students to understand and to deal intelligently with their industrial environment. These goals are sought through a system of study, planning, and manual experience in the work shops. Among the courses are classes in woodworking, arts and crafts, graphic arts, and me- chanical drawing. Russell R. Cook Department Head Robert C. Delisle William J. Dooley Jr. Erkki Koutonen John S. Library In addition to containing excellent reference books, our school library offers students and faculty members alike the services of a book-lending system and a quiet reading room. Management of the library and the selection of all volumes and periodicals are the duties of our librarian, Mr. William Dooley, who also has the task of planning the displays on the school bulletin board. In this endeavor, we believe we have suc- cessfully captured some of the vigor, the warmth, and the spirit of our class. Our Boulder is a tangible reminder of our student years at Fitchburg High School — a reminder of the vari- ous scholastic, social, and athletic activities we, as a class, have shared. Its members inspire and unify the student body at various athletic events and with pre- game publicity, instill students with school pride and school interest. The club members work diligently making posters, planning skits, and organizing rallies. Through the rallies in particular, students lose their status as spectators and become active participants in the event. The Thanksgiving Rally, the single most important activity of the Club, is the prime example of the hard work and cooperation necessary to make this organization a success. Booster Club membership, is always large and reflects the zeal and interest of its members for Fitchburg High School. Seated: E. Bouchard, Secretar)'; J. Crockford, Vice-President. Standing: R. Elected each year by the student body, the council acts as an important link between the students and the faculty. All fund drives as well as all campaigns and elections are sponsored by the council Special activities and school functions are publicized and supervised by the Student Council and it is the duty of council members to see that school disciplinary regulations are obeyed. The prime concern is the pro- motion of school spirit, school pride, and a respectful attitude toward fellow students and the faculty of Fitch- burg High School. Seated: N. Nasis, R. Legere, B. Dramatic Club Who can describe the excitement, the challenge, the fantastic tension of yorking together to produce a play? Class challenging class — each trying to bring its performance to a peak of ex- cellence that will win the award for the best competitive play. But when the award is won, the class becomes a school — competing for the state cham- pionship. This is what the Dramatic Club, under the supervision of Miss Joan Buffinton, offers — an opportunity for every student to express himself in drama whether it is in building a set, selling a ticket, making a costume, or playing a part. It is the quality of this group work — this interdependence — that makes the play, wins the audience. First Row: W. Stacevich, R. Addante, M. Bousquet. Second Row: J. Nado, M. Morse, S. Lord. The club gives stu- dents an opportunity to participate in field trips, to attend lectures, and to view films relating to their scientific studies. The club's main concern is to give students a chance to learn by in- dividual experimentation. Through the scientific ability and enthusiasm of the students, the Chemistry Club has be- come a worthwhile addition to our extra-curricular activities. 41 Senior Literary Club The Senior Literary Club, under the direction of Miss Lillian M. Taylor, strives, through lectures by guest speakers, to increase its members' awareness of the world's great literature. Recently there has been an em- phasis on greater membership participation in the form of student programs. Pupils are chosen for member- ship on the basis of their proficiency in English and are given the opportunity' to become better acquainted with the works of outstanding authors. ''Red and Gray'' The Red and Gray , the combined hterary magazine and newspaper of Fitchburg High School, offers students an opportunity to demonstrate their abil- ities in creative and expository writing. Short stories, poems, articles concern school events, sports, and scholastic achievement, and special features are all included in the magazine. Not merely an entertaining project, the Red and Gray is an educational experience, for the staff spends many hours compiling material and learning how to publish a magazine. Under the supervision of Miss Margaret Mallahy, Miss Charlotte Ruberti, and Mr. Rich- ard Hodges, the Red and Gray staff and editors work to produce a magazine of quality and good taste. Miss Mullahy and Mr. Hodges discuss layout with Red and Gray editors, Joel Goldfarb and Joann Finch. 45 Music Department Our Music Department provides the musically inclined student with a num- ber of interesting activities. Supervised by Mr. Carlton R. Thorne, the Music Department has established a well- earned reputation for excellence. The Marching Band, acknowledged as one of the best bands in the area, represents Fitchburg High School dur- ing the football season and in many parades. The band also provides the music for school assemblies and various school performances. During the year, the band, the chorus, the orchestra, and the Dance Band perform in the Christ- mas and the Spring Concerts — the two musical highlights of the school year. The Music Department offers courses in Music Theory for the serious student of music and provides an opportunity for talented students to audition for the District and the All-State music groups. Football The Fitchburgh High football team worked hard this year and was rewarded with a successful season. At the outset of the season Coach Landon and his assistants, Mr. Conway and Mr. Tower, were hopeful bat appre- hensive. They had many promising underclassmen, but few experienced seniors. Co-captains Scott Thomas and Kenny Bedard and N.C.M.C. all-star John Monaghan, proved to be steady players and good leaders while the underclassmen learned quickly and helped greatly in producing a winning team. Other senior starters were Jim Parisi, Charley Forcier, and Mike Fiorentino who gave valuable assistance, while Dick Hurley, Paul Barnicle and Den Gagne provided needed depth. 50 A crucial moment. Gary Arsenault (62) stops an Athol runner. Co-captains Scott Thomas (19) and Ken Bedard (16) meet with opponents for toss of coin. Scott gets good pass protection from the line. Yogi DiPasquale picks up valuable yard- age against St. Bernard's. Scott Thomas directs the attack in the Rindge Tech game. CROSS COUNTRY The cross country team completed another successful season, ending with a record of 5 wins and 1 loss in dual meets. After losing the opening meet to Keene, the New Hampshire state .champions, the team went on to win its 5 remaining meets, including contests with intra-city foe Notre Dame and rival Leominster. The team was also very successful in invitational meets and the State Meet. The F.H.S. harriers competed in the Knights of Columbus Race in Worcester, winning 16 trophies and placing 3 runners, Co-Captain Bob Legere, Paul DiPerri, and Kevin Wiley, among the top ten. The team also won the Wachusett Invitational and the Lunen- burg Invitational meets. Fitchburg finished the season by placing third in the State Meet in Boston, and again Legere and Wiley were among the first ten runners. Under the mentorship of Coaches Koutonen and Gastonguay, the F. H. S. cross country' men have again proven themselves worthy of their reputation as fine runners. 56 Coaches Gastonguay and Koutonen ■ Fro;; Row: R. Wilbur, M. Fiorentino, S. Thomas, D. Auger, D. One of the reasons for the poor record was the caliber of the teams the F.H.S. hoopsters played outside the conference. The teams, including Natick, Boston Tech, and Nashua, had size and experience and were pre-season choices for their conference championships. The experience our boys gained by playing such formidable opponents was rewarding, for the Red and Gray then found the conference teams much easier to defeat. During pre-season practice Coach Oliva and his new assistant, Mr. James Benedict, were disappointed with the lack of height on the club, but were very satisfied with the spirit, enthusiasm and co-operation of the players. Under the direction of Coach Robert Christie, the Fitchburg High swim team, in its first meet, scored forty-eight points to overcome a powerful Boston EngHsh team by one point. Although trailing by nine points halfway through the meet, the F. H. S. squad fought back to win in the final event, the four hundred yard relay. In the second meet, our team was defeated by the exceptionally fine group of swim team alumni. Even though they lost the competition the F. H. S. Mermen displayed spirit, determination and ability. Fitchburg High suffered another disappointing loss in the season's third contest. Our competent swimmers were definitely superior to those of Leominster, but Fitchburg lost the meet through disqualifications. Outstanding seniors on the squad were Barry Cringan, Brian Donnelly, Jim Driscoll, Joel Goldfarb, Anti Maki, David Rocker and Vaughn Stewart. Brian Donnelly shows excellent form in his backstroke. This year's team, comprised mostly of underclass- men, includes seniors Daniel McCarthy, David Bean, and James Krull. One of the outstanding players on the squad was a junior. Rick Bennett, who led the team in goals. Coach Conway was very optimistic about his team's progress and felt that the squad, with Jeff Dedo as net tender, showed great improvement. 64 F.H.S. puckman gets off shot against N.D. First Row: P. In addi- tion to the three captains, Seniors Don Skehan and Rick Melder, and Juniors Mike Delibertis and Kevin Wiley were consistent scorers. The F.H.S. board pounders also competed in the B.A.A. meet in Boston, where DiPerri placed third in the mile and Legere came in fifth in the 1000 yard run. JUNIOR PROM Al Di La took us from everyday living to a majestic, serene Roman garden. Tali white pillars entwined with lush green i 'y enhanced the dignity and beauty of the scene. Crepe paper flowers and painted trees seemed real in the soft, dim light, as we danced to the music of the Bud Forrest Orchestra. Another decoration was the attractive fountain, a single spray of water filling a pool upon which flowers floated. Certainly our junior prominade was an unforgettable and lovely evening for us all. COMPETITIVE PLAYS The class of 1967 has had a successful and ex- citing experience in dramatics. For three consecutive years our class has won the best actress award, and our senior play took all the top honors. The sophomore year production, Antic Spring , was a light-hearted comedy in which Marsha Gallo won the best actress award for her exuberant and girlish portrayal of Blossom. Rae Shepherd received the award in our junior play, Two Crooks and a Lady , in her role as Mrs. Simmes-Vane, the shrewd, elderly paralitic. In Andante , our senior play, Mary- lou Ledden was judged best actress for her thoughtful and touching interpretation of the role of Martha Lawrence. Andante was our most important and most serious production.' It concerns David Lawrence, a talented and emotional violinist who is involved in an automobile accident which severely injures his hand. Unable to continue his playing, he finds his existence meaningless and in despair attempts to com- mit suicide. Mark Therrien, who played Lawrence, won the best actor award for his sensitive portrayal of a man who must rebuild his life and dreams through his son's career. To mention individuals who have excelled in acting is somewhat unfair, for a play is a group production involving more people than the actors alone. Without the excellent technical crew, publicity department, stage managers, makeup and scene de- sign artists, and student and faculty help, the plays could never have been successful. Special credit is given Miss Joan Buffinton and Mrs. Virginia Gallant for their invaluable assistance and patience. 78 i DAVID CHARLES ADAMS Good natured . . . likes swimming and water sports . . . plans a career in the navy.
