THE BOULDER 1966 Published by: THE CLASb OF 19bb FITCHBURG HIGH SCHOOL Fitchburg, Massachusetts We Americans are conscious of the in- fluence of English tradition and originality upon our lives. We recognize that this in- fluence was especially important during the period of colonization when all facets of a new American life were derived from British tradition and were blended with the originality of the pioneer. We feel that it is this same combination of originality and tradition that has made our class unique. For this reason we have chosen the English colonization period as the theme for our yearbook. Dedication Mr. Russell R. Cook graduated from Fitchburg State College in 1948 and received his Master's Degree from the same school in 1952. He became a member of the Fitchburg High School faculty in 1952. He teaches graphic arts and has been head of the Industrial Arts Department since 1960. Mr. Cook has been a dedicated class adviser as well as a friend to all. He, his wife, and his three children live in the countryside of Greenville, New Hampshire. Theirs is a fun-loving family. Often when his children are playing in a distance field, he calls them home with a walkie-talkie. Mr. Cook is in charge of the annual Washington trip. His enthusiasm and humor are well summed up in his recent slogan, Take the bus with Russ and leave the driv- ing to us! Mr. Cook was appointed as our class adviser, and we, the Class of 1966, feel that we could not have chosen a finer one. Stanley A. Goode, Principal Principal To the Class of 1966: Even though I have known you only a short time, I must commend you for the fine cooperation you have given me in my first year as the principal of Fitchburg High School. Your zeal and enthusiasm, your ardent desire for the need of learning, your self-discipline, and your overwhelming show of school spirit have made my job an easy task. To you, the Class of 1966, I am most grateful. You now must take your place in the adult world. The complex, interrelated, and compressed world with its social, economic, political, religious, and ideological conflicts will seem to raise insurmount- able barriers to you. You may feel some trepidation in facing them. Yet for the past four years the faculty here at the high school have guided you to this end — to meet the demands of the outside world. It is our hope that, formed by the ideals you have been taught, you will be prepared to show by your action that you are responsible citizens of the United States. My best wishes for personal success and hap- piness to all of you for the many years to come. v Principal Business Department r V Miss Madeline M. Donovan Department Head Vocational in concept, the Business Department trains students in busi- ness skills and gives them experience in office work. The secretarial program stresses stenography and office practice, while the clerical pro- gram excludes these courses and offers instead other electives to those more interested in bookkeeping. The part-time program enables above- average students to gain experience by doing actual office work during school hours. Typing Special, the only non-vocational course of the pro- gram, is offered to college-course freshmen. The Business Department insists upon and maintains quality by re- quiring students to earn at least a C average in order to take more advanced courses, such as stenography, typing, and bookkeeping. In this way the Business Department produces creditable workers, well pre- pared for business careers after graduation. Joseph J. Buono The part-timers. Miss Augusta Cottone Mrs. Kathryn M. Crain Miss Eleanor Dinkin Miss Maryann DiPalma 13 ■English Department Miss Lillian M. Taylor Department He ad Under the direction of Miss Lillian M. Taylor, the English Depart- ment of Fitchburg High School develops students intellectually, socially, and aesthetically through the study and interpretation of literature. To help us learn to live with other human beings, an understanding of human nature has been stressed in our English courses throughout our four years of high school. Our English teachers have strived to encourage our special creativity in expression, logical thinking, critical judgment, and personal knowledge and to instill in us an appreciation of our literary heritage. Thomas J. Angelopoulos Miss Ruth Boyer Mrs. Virginia Gallant Edward Gastonguay John E. Jones 15 Armand Dufour Department Head Foreign Language Department In a world constantly shrinking in size and in a civilization ever advancing in culture, knowledge in more than one lan- guage is becoming more and more valuable. The Language De- partment enables students to study foreign languages and to gain proficiency in them through advanced course programs. Of the romance language courses, Italian and Spanish are taught in three-year programs; French is offered for four years; and German may be studied for three years. The object of these modern language courses is to teach students to read, to write, and to speak foreign tongues — skills which will be useful in future studies and travel. Latin and its classical literature are taught in a four year program. Like other languages, Latin expresses and communicates important ideas. In addition, Latin aids students in English through word derivation and grammar and demonstrates to students the universality and timelessness of philosophy and morals. John Baimas William Boyle Mrs. Kathryn Kelly- Mrs. Yvette Malenfant 17 Mathematics Department Through the study of mathematics, man learns about the complexity and vastness of his world. Besides preparing young men and women for future technical training, the Mathematics Department at Fitchburg High School endeavors to give each student a deeper understanding of the infinite uses and theories of mathematics. As Seniors, we have come to realize the many applications of the various kinds of mathematics we have studied in our four years at Fitchburg High. Now at the com- pletion of one period of life and at the beginning of another, we realize the value of mathematics and the excellent training offered by the Mathe- matics Department at Fitchburg High School. Nicholas Ruberti Department Head f Mrs. Frances Austin Armas Fillback Floyd Inman Marco Landon 18 Guidance Department The Guidance Department at Fitchburg High School assists stu- dents in selecting the proper courses or institutions for higher learn- ing and counsels students whenever necessary. Through varied test- ing programs. Mr. Quinn. Mr. Karkos. and Miss McDermott see that every student enrolls in the courses best suited to his talents. During our Senior year the Guidance Office becomes as familiar to us as our homerooms for it is the guidance counselors who help us mold our futures. Reginald Quinn Department Head You want to go where? Miss Virginia McDermott at her desk. 20 Physical Education Department Through a well-planned and regulated program of exer- cise and sports, the Physical Education Department de- velops the physical fitness of the entire student body. There is a varied schedule of activities designed to suit the needs and interests of all the students and to encourage team co-operation and individual initiative. For the girls there are intramural basketball and volleyball, tennis, bowling, and a gymnastic club, while for the boys intra-team sports are emphasized. However, since Fitchburg High School realizes that physical education has an even more basic role to play in maintaining the good health of students, the Physical Education Department sponsors an essential pro- gram of regular exercises, guided by trained teachers. John Conway Mrs. Lina Korpi I'm not coming down! 21 Science Department By stimulating the search for knowledge of basic concepts and bv providing an opportunity for their application, the Science Department helps students to adjust to the complexities of the modern world. There is a diversified program of study, including Earth Science. General Science, Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Physics, and a newly formed Chemistry Club provides an added opportunity for in- dividual research. The Science Department prepares the students of Fitchburg High School for the highly technical world of tomorrow. Leslie Griffiths Department Head Would you believe that this rock is 12,000.000 years old? No? Would you believe 4,000? How about 2 months? Albert Chouinard John Fisher 22 23 Social Science Department The Social Science Department recognizes the importance of well- informed citizens and, therefore, assists the student in developing his sense of responsibility as a citizen. By studying both past and present events, the student becomes acquainted with the development of our nation, and with this knowledge of the past, the student is more aware of economic and social affairs. To fully understand a nation's diplomacy, the student studies the customs, ideas, and actions of a foreign land. The study of our government is essential to us, the students, who will choose the future leaders of our country and determine our na- tion's political actions. John Dillon Department Head James Angelos Mrs. Catherine Flynn Harold Flynn Peel one potato at a time Vocational Department Tools of the trade. A. John Ashton The aim of the Vocational Department is to provide students with an opportunity for profitable employment in specialized fields. A student can train for his chosen career in Automobile Mechanics. Electricity, Machinery, or Wood Working. Upon graduation, each student receives a trade certificate which qualifies him for skilled employment. This unique program supplies modern industry with competent, dependable workers. George Dunsford Paul Ellis Look what I found! 27 Russell R. Cook Department Head Industrial Arts Industrial Arts orient the student in the technical and industrial aspects of life. This orientation is sought through study, planning, and construction experience in the laboratories and shops. The purposes of the industrial arts program are to teach the student to use leisure time more effectively, to enable him to deal more intelli- gently with consumer goods, and to help him become a more efficient producer. The program also emphasizes the need for safety and the need for training in the student's particular field. We sincerely hope that every page, every picture, and every word conveys the true spirit of our class. The 1966 Boulder is one of the few tangible things which we shall have to remind us of our high school years. Years from graduation we shall enjoy flip- ping through the pages and reliving our youth. The staff of the 1966 Boulder is proud to present this yearbook as a reflection of the warmth and spirit of the class. Advisors: Mrs. Irene Karkos, Business Advisor; John Baimas. The club officers and executive committee arrange the rallies, and the club members, by perform- ing in original skits and providing colorful posters, demonstrate the school's support to the team. A highlight of the year was the Thanks- giving rally where the students displayed their overwhelming enthusiasm through attractive decorations and humorous skits. By selling bows, pins, and sweatshirts, the students em- phasized their pride in Fi tchburg High School. As. we, the class of nineteen hundred and sixty-six, leave Fitchburg High School, we shall always remember the lasting friendships and treasured experiences we enjoyed as mem- bers of the Booster Club. Student Council The Student Council, under the direction of Mr. James Sweeney and Miss Rita Mallahy, is composed of nine seniors, six juniors, and four sophomores elected by their respective classes. The Council has many important powers and re- sponsibilities: to supervise all general elections; to estab- lish and enforce regulations for assemblies, study halls, corridors, cafeteria, school grounds, social events, and public functions; to consider policies, activities and changes recommended by students and teachers; and to authorize, sponsor, and supervise drives and campaigns. Perhaps the most important function of the Student Council is to pro- mote respect for Fitchburg High School and unity among its students. Nick Bramante receives $100,000!???? Officers: M. Kielty, Treasurer; S. Haimila, Secretary; D. Ingemie, President; M. Gallo, Vice-President. Holding up the show. Let me demonstrate its medicinal properties. Dramatic Club The tension felt by the actors before the first act of the Senior Class Play, the interclass rivalry of the Com- petitive Plays, and the rewarding experience of working together to produce a fine play, skit, or dramatic read- ing— these are all part of the Dramatic Club at Fitch- burg High School. In sponsoring theatrical perform- ances, the Dramatic Club gives a great number of stu- dents the opportunity to express themselves by conduct- ing a meeting, performing on the stage, or working backstage. Participation in the Fitchburg High School Dramatic Club helps members to understand better the people and situations they will encounter throughout life. Senior Literary Club For many years the Senior Literary Club has been a valuable part of the extracurricular activities of Fitchburg High School. Its members, chosen on the basis of their English achievement, have an opportunity to enrich their knowledge of the world's great literature through the various lectures presented by visit- ing authorities. This year, through the efforts of Miss Lillian Taylor, the Senior Literary Club had the good fortune of hearing Mr. John Baimas discuss the 1963 Nobel Prize winning poet Seferis, Mr. John McGrail lecture on Yeats. Mr. Louis Shepherd speak on James Jovce, and the Reverend John Capuano discuss Dante. Under the advisorship of members of the Senior Literary Club, a Sophomore Reading Club has been formed this year to guide and stimulate sophomores in the reading of worthwhile books and poems. Mr. John McGrail speaks on Yeats. I French Club Le Cercle Francais is a rewarding expansion of the oppor- tunities offered by the French program at Fitchburg High School. Honor students in French with a genuine interest in French language and culture may become club members. While informality enables students to pursue worthwhile activity with- out class pressure and control, basic parliamentary procedure maintains courtesy and friendliness. Conversations at meetings are conducted entirely in French and, therefore, improves speech and knowledge of the language. Recitations given by student members stress the spirit and in- stitutions of France. By having the students themselves talk on cultural aspects, club members are inspired by emulation of their classmates to participate actively in the enriching program. Seated: L. Moquin, S. The program of the Distributive Education Clubs of America emphasizes marketing, merchandising, and management to pro- mote appreciation for citizenship responsibilities in our com- petitive enterprise system. D.E.C.A. gives the student an oppor- tunity to participate in school activities and teaches him to lead as well as to follow. D.E.C.A. is important not only to the student, but also to the community and the nation, for it strives for vocational understanding, civic consciousness, social intel- ligence, and leadership development. Now this hot line is only for emergencies. Red and Gray As a literary magazine and a school newspaper, the Red and Gray serves a dual purpose. Headed by Editor Steven Rustari and Assistant Editor Frances Flaum, the various staffs, consisting of juniors, and seniors, are responsible for all ma- terial published. The literary staff collects, reads, and revises the original stories and poems submitted by students. The exchange committee corresponds with other high schools and reviews their publications in a column reactivated this year. The school notes and athletic staffs report on im- portant school activities. The personals column includes photographs and write-ups of students, and a column, entitled I Think, allows students to voice their opinions on various topics. The business staff is in charge of obtaining ad- vertising subscriptions from local clients while the art and photography departments provide the needed illustrations and pictures. The special features staff does research and is responsible for original and unusual items. Seated: S. Nikolow; J. Rodriquenz; J. Waugh; M. Bennett; S. Rustari, Editor; F. Flaum, Assistant Editor; C. Nutting, W. Peters 46 Music Department Under the skillful direction of Mr. Carlton Thorne, the Music Department has established a reputation for high quality. The mixed chorus and the band have enlightened audiences with their annual performances at the Christmas and the Spring Concerts. In the spring of 1965 the Concert Choir and the Concert Band performed, by invitation, at the New York World's Fair, while in the fall of 1965 the Marching Band placed first in competition with bands from other cities in Massa- chusetts. Everyone has a right to be proud of our Music Department which is an important link between our school and our city. Although the Fitchburg High eleven were un- able to secure a victory in the 1965 campaign, the team displayed a strong seasonal effort. Led by Co-Captains Bernie Araujo and Les Meehan, the squad fought vigorously against its competitors. Unfortunately. Fitchburg sparked only as a first- half team and was not able to muster maximum strength for any Saturday afternoon clash. Seniors Greg Caves, Ernie DiGeronimo. Ralph Alario, and Steve Bedard, plagued by injuries, were absent temporarily from the gridiron scene. Other players such as Tom Townsend, Sam Goose Mancuso, and Tom Larame managed to stay physically fit from September to November and contributed needed power. Head Coach Marco Landon, hampered by the lack of veteran ball players, faced a difficult re- building year. Fitchburg welcomed a newcomer to Crocker Field, assistant coach David Towers. The class of 1966 wishes to thank mentors Towers, Conway, and Landon for their excellent contribu- tions to the development of our boys. Those cheerleaders aren't too bad. Winners in Lunenburg Invitational 54 Co-Captains Dick Gates and Allan Cackett Coach Erkki Koutonen's harriers chalked up another successful season; the cross country team went undefeated in six dual meets. In the annual Knights of Columbus Road Race. Fitchburg earned fifteen trophies, and. for the seventh straight year, copped the Lunenburg Invitational Meet. Senior Co-Captains Alan Cackett and Dick Gates placed continually among the top ten winners of each meet. Other Seniors such as Steve Wilbur. Chris Marble, and Don Bernier contributed needed points. Swimming At the start of the swimming season, Coach Bob Christie claimed that he had good depth and that his inexperienced swimmers were progressing rapid- ly. The mentor also said that the squad should do well against high school competitors, but that it might suffer defeat against strong private schools. He mentioned that the team was looking forward to and preparing for its meet with the Gardner state champions. Mr. Christie's predictions were very accurate. The Mermen were beaten by only one private school, the Deerfield Academy JV's. and suffered no losses to any other squad. The most exciting experience of the season came when, in its last meet, Fitchburg defeated arch-rival, Gardner. This is the first time our school has beaten the Chair City team. Gardner has been state champions twelve out of the past twenty years and for the past four years has lost to no high school except Fitchburg. First Row: G. Greene, B. Araujo, J. Cordio, M. Montuori, F. Bicoules. Second Row: M. McNamara, D. Petrides, K. Paul, E. Sardelis, B. Dipasquale, M. Fiorentino. Coach Oliva and Captain DiPace Basketball The Fitchburg High quintet, posting a record of seven wins and eleven losses, had an erratic but fruitful season. The team had a poor start not only because it lost games but because it lacked team effort. At first, only an attitude of individual gain reflected from the court to the stands. Perhaps the boys were tired of reading Sentinel sports accounts, because a mid-season rally helped clinch important victories. St. Bernards, Athol, and Gardner were defeated by hard fighting Raider Hoopsters. This desire to play collectively definitely added extra wins. Captain Steve DiPace ended his third year of varsity basketball during his senior year. 59 First Row: Mike Guglietti, Don Dupuis, Dave Therrien, Tom Kelly, Andy Banville, Len Arminio, Art Eskola, Dan Ouellette, Joe Liberatore. Indoor Track The Board Pounders compiled a successful record by winning seven out of nine dual meets. Mentor Ed Gastonguay deserves credit for his efforts. He produced a team that had great spirit. His training program helped make the boys fine runners. Seniors were among those in the seasonal limelight. Capt. Steve Bedard placed first in the 600 yard run at the K of C meet in Boston while Steve Michaelides took the fourth in the BAA shot put. Other sixty- six men who added necessary points were Don Bernier. Allan Cackett, Dick Gates, James Sciabar- rasi, and Steve Wilbur. Let us also mention that the in door track team runners have to practice out of doors. Although January and February weather condicions were not exactly appealing, the boys man- aged to complete a vigorous daily practice. 63 Pete sets the pace for another Fitchburg victory. Steve wins 600-yard run at B.A.A. meet. 65 ame and Rally Last minute preparations. Junior Prom We, the class of 1966, desired the best, the most original Junior Prom in the one- hundred-year history of Fitchburg High School. Through initiative and perseverance we obtained our desire. On the night of February sixth, we entered the gymnasium to find ourselves in the warm and rustic atmosphere of a German tavern overlooking a quaint German stone village. The fire in the enormous stone fireplace added a warm glow. Checked tablecloths and wax-covered wine bottles helped to enrich the Bavarian atmosphere. Surely the decorations and the prom itself were simply 'wunderbar. The reception line. Hello, there. 74 Hey . . . Mr. Dennehy' Competitive Plays The Competitive Plays is an annual production of the Fitchburg High School dramatic club under the direction of Mrs. Virginia Gallant. As sopho- mores the class of 1966 presented, I'm a Fool adapted from the short story by Sherwood Ander- son. Mark Kielty received the award for best actor. In 1964. sixteen juniors presented Sir James Barrie's mystery Shall We Join the Ladies? A mood of frightful tension was carefully contrived and carried throughout the entire play. On December 10, 1965, the class of 1966 pre- sented Eugene O'Neil's tense drama, The Rope. Steven Rustari, as a sermonizing grandfather, Leon- ard Arminio, as the prodigal son who returns un- expectedly, Melanie Gallo, as the old man's dis- traught daughter, Charles Johnson, as her husband. Diane Beauregard, as their daughter, offered por- trayals that helped win the award of the best play for the senior class. Mrs. Virginia Gallant was to a very great degree responsible for the success of the play. The arduous work of the cast, the crew, and above all, Mrs. Gallant was well-rewarded by the award of the best play presented to the seniors. KB Junior Class Officers m m We, the one hundredth class to graduate from Fitchburg High School, are now ready to take our places among those who have preceded us. For four years we have been guided by dedicated teachers who have attempted to prepare us for this moment. Now it is up to us to exemplify the type of people they have wished us to become: mature young adults eager and able to meet the demands of our new lives. Now to the Class of Nineteen Hundred and Sixty Seven we leave the position of prominence. They are to be the leaders, the first of a new century for Fitchburg High School. May they accept the responsibility of setting an example for the one hundred classes to follow. May they use the advantages of their senior year well. Above all, we wish for the new senior class the ability to unlock the stores of knowledge housed within the walls of our school and the foresight to use this knowledge wisely. 150 Index of Advertisers Acme Maintenance A-23 Adams, Jos Inc A-12 Airport Sales A-19 Allen's Dept. Absent when photo was taken S. Hay. The Fitchburg nine deserves credit for doing a remark- ably good job in the 1966 season. This is the first year in seven years that our baseball team has entered District Three Playoffs. FHS, eliminated from District Three play- offs by losing to St. Mary's of Milford, should have no qualms about its tournament showings. The diamond nine handily defeated its first two foes and lost to St. Mary's in a difficult eleven inning game. For a while during the regular season play Athol domin- ated the NCMC standings. However, Fitchburg in its sec- ond meeting with Athol defeated the Tool City boys and tied the league standings. Athol in its next game lost to Gardner while FHS beat Leominster. Our win placed us one game ahead of Athol and consequently brought us to the NCMC championship. Special thanks are extended to Coach Jerry O'Rourke for developing a fine squad and to the senior boys who contributed very much to our victories. Front row left to right: S. Wilbur, J.
