Physical Education Faced by the powerful Communist threat the American people have been ac- cused of leading a soft existence. The proponents of the flabby-American theory have obviously failed to examine the physical regimen demanded in our public schools. Fitchburg High School's Physical Education Department firmly supports the belief of physical excellence as recommended by our late President John F. Kennedy. In addition to the calisthenics program, the department conducts inter-scholastic sports competition in basketball and volleyball. The aim is not the manufacture of physical robots, but the development of the body to prepare us for the hardships and challenges of tomorrow's world.

Industrial Arts ERKKI KOUTONEN Too often the public high school is viewed as a preparatory school for college and not regarded as a preparatory school for life. The industrial Arts Department offers courses to prepare the non-college bound student for a role in life immediately upon grad- uation. In the Woodworking and Painting courses students have the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of several valuable trades. Any student with creativity and imagination will find ample chance for developing both in the Arts and Crafts course. The Homemaking course presents a rudimentary background in cook- ing and sewing, two skills that every girl will need in future life.
