Foreign Language Because of the increasing necessity for reasoning and understanding among the nations of the world today, there is a greater demand for men and women skilled in the art of communicating with our neighbors around the world. Our Language Department, which offers four years of Latin and French, three years of German and Spanish, and two years of Italian, prepares interested students for rewarding careers in many areas, including foreign affairs. Further apprecia- tion of these languages is available through activities outside the classroom, such as our various language clubs, contests, and excursions to plays and museums. Physical Education Faced by the powerful Communist threat the American people have been ac- cused of leading a soft existence. The proponents of the flabby-American theory have obviously failed to examine the physical regimen demanded in our public schools. Fitchburg High School's Physical Education Department firmly supports the belief of physical excellence as recommended by our late President John F. Kennedy. In addition to the calisthenics program, the department conducts inter-scholastic sports competition in basketball and volleyball. The aim is not the manufacture of physical robots, but the development of the body to prepare us for the hardships and challenges of tomorrow's world.
