BOULDER ■1965 1 1111? wi'iirT.f ' ;i.iiu l| WW i:AM ;i!i r to TIT « hoi !)-. V,UULD w rr or Til Hii.) i:t'-i' u i We in New England are proud of our rich heritage and the vital role this region has played in Ameri- can history. Yet we must not think of New England solely in connec- tion with the past; for New Eng- land successfully blends past, pres- ent, and future, thereby setting an example for us to follow in our own lives. Through a realization of the value of the past and wise preparation for the future, we, too, should strive for success in the present. In order to pay tribute with pride to our history and heritage, we, the Class of 1965, have chosen Old New England as the theme for this yearbook. FITCHBURa m . THE BOULDER 1965 • ■■■.. Prompted by a love of children, Mrs. Angelini entered the teaching profession soon after earning her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Massachusetts. She also received a Masters degree in Education in 1962 from Fitchburg State College and a Master of Arts from Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas. In addition to keeping abreast with all the new findings in the field of biology, Mrs. Angelini still finds time to spend with her three lively chil- dren. The Class of 1965 has been most fortunate to have such a concerned and knowledgable advisor. Dedication We, the Class of Nineteen-hundred and Sixty-five dedicate our Boulder to Mrs. Maureen Angelini and Mr. Marco Landon. Not only have they served us admirably as class advisors, but more important they have shown us by ex- ample what true devotion, determina- tion, and desire may accomplish. A star athlete himself, Mr. Landon has helped coach the Fitchburg High School var- sity football and basketball teams to many victories. Influenced by a local coach, Mr. Landon started his teaching career in New Britain, Connecticut. Soon after, he obtained a position in Fitchburg High School teaching basic mathematics. The father of four chil- dren, Mr. Landon won his Bachelor of Science degree in education from Boston University in 1954 and his Masters in Guidance from Hartford University in 1961. He also has achieved thirty hours of credit beyond his Masters at Hartford University. A favorite with all students because of his under- standing and genial personality, Mr. Landon has been a vital contribution to the Class of 1965. 5 Our Principal Stephen T. Woodbury To the Class of 1965: Abraham Lincoln stated one hundred years ago that The dogmas o£ the quiet past are inadequate to the stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise with the occasion. As our cause is new, so we must think anew and act anew. President Johnson recently said, We are now embarked on another venture to put the American dream to work in meeting the new demands of a new day. Once again we must start where men who would improve their society have always known they must begin - with a.n educational system re- studied, reinforced, and revitalized. Words such as automation and cybernetics art new but they are hero to stay. Some changes in our society which are manifested by unemployment, poverty and social unrest, have as their moving force the thrust of technology. The individual must be trained to think courageously enough to face up to life's complexities. The only ethical training for mature life is the training that includes the experience of being both free and responsible. We hope you have learned what the verities of a fruitful life are. They surely are the anchors which form the foundations of the faith that man needs to attain happiness and satisfaction. ROBERT O. AAAILLOUX JAMES J. SWEENEY Assistant Principal Assistant Principal 7 Business The Business Department prepares students for future work in secretarial or clerical fields. For those students who excel in their studies and who receive high recommendation from their teachers, there is also the part-time program, in which students attend regular classes one week and are employed in some section within the School Department the next week. The Business Department also aids its students in se- curing employment outside of school. There is also a Typewriting Special Course for college course students, which instructs students in the methods of preparing paper work for college. To complete their business training, a great many students go to business schools. When selecting his school, the business student can always find guidance from his teachers. A little guidance office in itself, the Business Department provides students with a sound and valuable basis for future work in business fields. JOSEPH J. BUONO MISS AUGUSTA COTTONE MRS. KATHRYN M. GRAIN MISS ELEANOR DINKIN MISS MARYANN DiPALMA MISS JANICE DONABEDIAN 10 Department MRS. MARILYN FAVA MISS CLAIRE GAUTHIER MRS. IRENE KARKOS MRS. PAULINE RODRIQUENZ D. ROBERT ROMANO MRS. ELLEN SJOBLOM MRS. LUCILLE SULLIVAN Busy, busy, busy. English Through English, our native language, we convey our thoughts and emotions to others. Because our language contains the complex contributions of many for- eign tongues, it presents at times difficulties not only to foreigners, but also to native Americans. To acquaint students with good English literature, schools are compelled to provide excellent, not merely adequate, instruction. The teachers of our English department strive continually to open new vistas to the pupils through English and its correct usage. THOMAS J. ANGELOPOULOS MRS. VIRGINIA GALLANT EDWARD GASTONGUAY 12 Department JOHN E. JONES MISS MARGARET M. MALLAHY MISS RITA T. MALLAHY MISS AAYRNA ROSENBAUM MISS CHARLOTTE RUBERTI MISS MARY TAYLOR 14 Guidance Department To meet the awesome task of guidance by proper course scheduling, advice and assistance in college applications, and aid in seeking employment, our skilled guidance counselors, Mr. Quinn, Mr. Karkos, and Miss McDermott, are always available and eager to help. Through individual counseling, aptitude and intelligence tests, and group lectures, our Guidance Department furnishes us the information that we need to know about ourselves and about the colleges and occupations in which we are interested to use our high school preparation to good advantage. MISS VIRGINIA McDERMOTT ANDREW KARKOS 15 Foreign Language Because of the increasing necessity for reasoning and understanding among the nations of the world today, there is a greater demand for men and women skilled in the art of communicating with our neighbors around the world. Our Language Department, which offers four years of Latin and French, three years of German and Spanish, and two years of Italian, prepares interested students for rewarding careers in many areas, including foreign affairs. Further apprecia- tion of these languages is available through activities outside the classroom, such as our various language clubs, contests, and excursions to plays and museums. Students who have diligently studied a language have been immeasurably en- riched. Ich weIss nichf was soil es bedevten. JOHN C. BAIMAS WILLIAM J. BOYLE MISS MARIE L. CHAMPAGNE 16 Department Physical Education Faced by the powerful Communist threat the American people have been ac- cused of leading a soft existence. The proponents of the flabby-American theory have obviously failed to examine the physical regimen demanded in our public schools. Fitchburg High School's Physical Education Department firmly supports the belief of physical excellence as recommended by our late President John F. Kennedy. In addition to the calisthenics program, the department conducts inter-scholastic sports competition in basketball and volleyball. The aim is not the manufacture of physical robots, but the development of the body to prepare us for the hardships and challenges of tomorrow's world. Industrial Arts ERKKI KOUTONEN Too often the public high school is viewed as a preparatory school for college and not regarded as a preparatory school for life. The industrial Arts Department offers courses to prepare the non-college bound student for a role in life immediately upon grad- uation. In the Woodworking and Painting courses students have the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of several valuable trades. Any student with creativity and imagination will find ample chance for developing both in the Arts and Crafts course. The Homemaking course presents a rudimentary background in cook- ing and sewing, two skills that every girl will need in future life. To create skilled workers for our society is the goal of our In- dustrial Arts Department. JOHN S. LUKAS 'I didn't know your hand was down there! WILLIAM S. MICHAELS WILLIAM J. DOOLEY NICHOLAS .MONTESION 19 Mathematics Mathematics provides business and in- dustry with their only method for quanti- tative determination and solution of all types of problems. Mathematics also con- stitutes a significant part of the training of technicians to meet the requirements of modern industry. It is therefore essen- tial that our educational systems produce graduates highly skilled both in the prac- tical and in the theoretical aspects of mathematics. The Fitchburg High School Mathematics Department deserves com- mendation for its excellent fulfillment of this obligation. 20 Department MARCO LANDON PAUL NIEMI GERARD RIVELL Be careful, Dennis, He's watching! A future engineer. EDMUND B. RYAN You can stop laughing now, boys. 21 Science The current scientific battle between the free world and the countries of the Communist bloc has made it imperative that our country have an ade- quate supply of well-trained scientific talent. In addition, the increased scientific complexity of our society demands that each citizen, regardless of his profession or vocation, have a basic under- standing of scientific subjects. The success of Fitch- burg High School graduates as collegians and as employees indicates that our Science Department has prepared us to meet well these challenges. Science is chemistry . . . MRS. MAUREEN ANGELINI MISS HELEN M. BROWN RICHARD P. CHABOT JOHN C. FISHER ... and science is physics. 22 Department ARTHUR S. KOYKKA RICHARD H. AAAKI SVEN SCHEDIN 23 Social Science In a world shrunk by technological advances the study of the social sciences is a necessity for every world citizen. The Social Science Department attempts to broaden understanding not only of our own history and development but also of history and development of other nations. By studying American history and government, we acquire a keen appre- ciation of our heritage; in addition, we realize the sacrifices necessary for the development of freedom. The knowledge of foreign governments and peoples prepares us for a richer life by making us more conscious of the economic, political, and social problems of today's world. These are the goals of our Social Science Department— goals well achieved. A Social Science Department Assembly featured this panel of Seniors. HAROLD L. FLYNN 24 Department Vocational Since almost all of today's jobs require highly-skilled and well-educated tech- nicians, the Vocational Education Department has developed a unique program of schooling for boys in grades ten through twelve. Half of the school day is devoted to actual shop work while the other half is used for classroom instruction. In shops equipped with the newest facilities and set up to resemble actual in- dustrial operations, the boys study Automobile Mechanics, Electrical Work, Machine Shop Work, or Woodworking. Classroom time is spent on such subjects as English, United States History, Algebra, Physics, and Consumer Economics, all of which are specifically oriented for a vocational career. By offering an excellent job placement service, the Vocational Department continues to assist the boys even after grad- uation. This well-rounded program provides industry with highly competent and well- educated workers who are ready to assume responsibilities and to aid in progress. A posed picture? A. JOHN ASHTON PAUL R. As you turn the pages and reminisce about the events de- picted, you will remember the thrill of an undefeated football team, the joys of Fitchburg High School's greatest prom, the jubilation after smashing victories in intra-class competitions, and many other memorable occasions. To the Class of 1965: As students at Fitchburg High School, we have had various opportunities to develop our abilities and to prepare ourselves for adulthood. How well we have taken advantage of these opportunities will soon be evident; in whatever way we have endeavored to profit from our years in high school, we will also seek to better ourselves in the years ahead. The best ad- vice that I can give you is to take advantage of every possible chance for increasing your knowl- edge of your role in life. Every person has a particular talent, and fully cultivating this talent is, his duty to mankind. We have acted together as a class; now we must separate, but we must keep the spirit of unity in the future to strengthen ourselves as citizens. The success of our high school years will soon be measured by our ability to accept our responsibilities, no longer merely to our class and our school, but to society and humanity. This year's magazine, edited by Douglas Mayor and Pamela Green, has continued the older traditions while instituting several new ideas. One major change in 1965 has been the addition of a Senior Page containing caricatures of many Seniors. The literary section reflects the high standards of excellence set by English teachers in all four classes. To have a story published in the Red and Gray is one of the highest honors a student can receive for his writing. In addition to the literary section, stu- dents enjoy the Personals pages, the Sports sections, and the School Activi- ties page. The Senior Literary Club, comparable to a college honor society, attempts to in- crease the knowledge of its members. Throughout the year learned visitors ad- dress the club. The talk on racial problems by Mrs. Doris Kirkpatrick inspired the members to collect books for bookless cities of the South. Although the club's main interest is the formation of study groups through which the students may explore new realms of literature or further their knowledge of a required author, they occasionally differ from the norm. Last year in celebration of Shakespeare's four hundredth birthday, members presented excerpts from his plays. Through this intensive extra-curricular activity, the members benefit themselves, their school, and their society. The purpose of the French Club is to give interested students an opportunity to supplement their regular classroom work with a background in French civili- zation. In recent years the works of French authors, composers, and playwrights have been studied by this active group. The people and customs of the many differ- ent provinces of France have also been a favorite study. Each year the club attends a university production or a review of a French play. This year, the meetings, conducted in French, were directed by Jeanne Legere, president, Rene Robichaud, vice-president, Patricia AAcConville, secretary, and Paul Gardner, treasurer. The Student Council consists of nine Seniors, six Juniors, and four Sophonnores, who are elected by their respective classes for a one year term. The Council, under the direction of Mr. Mailloux and Miss Rita Mallahy, organ- izes and supervises all general school elec- tions and appoints the committees necessary for the various functions. It is also the council's duty to consider any changes recommended, through proper peti- tion, by the student body. The principal may confirm or veto the council's decision. Another function of the Student Council is to supervise all charity drives. 103 i One of the best attended and most exciting extracurricular activities offered at F.H.S. is the Dramatic Club. Under the able supervision of Mr. Ruberti and Mrs. Gallant, the club has made great progress toward giving more pupils from its increasing memberships an oppor- tunity to act. Each year the Competitive Plays and Senior Class Play draw large audiences and help to establish good relations between the school and the public. Even the club meet- ings, which are well directed and interesting, offer valuable training to members. The Dra- matic Club in no small part is responsible for our leaving F.H.S. better equipped to commu- nicate with our fellow men. Dramatic A bad rehearsal for the Senior cast. 104 Booster Club The Booster Club is cne of the oldest clubs at Fitchburg High. Its main purpose is to stimulate the support of the student body for the school's athletic teams, especially the varsity fcctball and basketball teams. The club sponsors rallies, makes and displays posters, and organizes cheering sections. This year, in particular, the rallies consisting of organized cheers, selections by the band, and original skits, have been extremely successful. The Booster Club is also a service club for the school. It has often been called upon to assist other school activities in whatever v ay possible. Membership is open to Seniors, Juniors and to some Sophomores. J. Carbonneau, O. Drepanos, M. J. O'Brien, D. Piccicuto 106 Self-«xplanatory Cheerleaders? Football players? or what? Seated: J. Band Officers Student Conductors Our Music Department contributes greatly to the success of many of our school functions. During the football sea- sons, for example, our versatile band and spirited major- ettes provide entertaining accompaniment to all rallies and football games. In addition to representing Fitchburg High throughout the year in numerous parades, the band has also earned recognition as an outstanding performer in local school competitions. For the past two years, the chorus, which plays an equally important role, has been invited to participate in the Christmas programs on Boston Common. Our vocalists, one of the finest choral groups in central Massachusetts, are always warmly received at their Christmas perform- ances, as well as in our newly established annual Spring Concerts. Making its debut this year our Concert Choir, impressive in its cranberry and gold blazers, promises to be another musical unit of which we may be proud. We, the graduating class, are grateful to all our devoted musicians for making our musical efforts successful. The Concert Choir First Row: Mr. Thorne, R. Garneau, D. Gallant, H. Aho, H. The elaborate decorations were in a color scheme of blue, white, gold, and silver, while soft blue lighting produced a subdued, continental atmosphere. Wall panels were white with gold trim and full-length windows were bordered with flowing blue curtains. Potted palms, chairs, and tables were arranged in cafe style around the dance floor. From a pagoda-like bandstand of silver, blue, and gold, Frankie Dee and his orchestra played high society music. Junior- Senior D. Gearan, P. Piccicufo, J. As we, the Class of Nineteen Hundred and Sixty-five, leave Fitchburg High School, we will take with us wonderful memories of the friends, teachers, classes, and activities that have been very much a part of these past four years. During these years and through these experiences, we have had opportunities to mature and to prepare ourselves for the attainment of life's goals. Now we also leave the members of the Class of Nineteen Hundred and Sixty-six in their new position as the Senior Class. May they accept well their responsibilities to set examples and to take initiative in school affairs. May they also profit from and enjoy their Senior year more than any other year, because one's senior year is, and should be, the best year of all. 146 Index of Advertisers Acme Maintenance - A- 2 Airport Sales A- 9 Allen's Dept.
