TAYLOR English MISS ELEANOR M. TUCKER Algebra, Plane Geometry MISS ETHEL L. PEABODY An excellent teacher and a marvelous personality belovec by all who know her. The end of this school year will brina to a close the active career of this devoted teacher. Fraulein Peabody, born in Somerville, Massachusetts, gradu ated in 1911 from the Somerville Latin High School. Living in the shadow of Tufts University, naturally she went to Jack- son, the women's college for Tufts. Here she received many honors. She was vice-president and president of the Omicror Chapter of Jackson's Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority and was a Summa Cum Laude (with highest praise) graduate. She re- ceived a scholarship for her outstanding record, and gained the distinction of being awarded the Phi Beta Kappa Key. Since then she has sent more than one hundred Fitchburg High School students to Tufts. During her many faithful years at Fitchburg High School, Fraulein Peabody has taught English, Latin, French, Ancient History, World History, Algebra, and of course, German. Be- tween 1931 and 1956 she was in charge of the stage and properties for the competitive plays, the senior play, dramatic club programs, variety review and Junior-Senior receptions. Whether on the football field or in the classroom he was a splendid example of a dedicated teacher and a true friend. His unselfish devotion and guidance to his students were characteristic of his many years at Fitchburg High. How can we, the Class of 1962, ever forget the warmth and good humour that he continuously radiated? The sun has now set; the long, grey shadows of evening have enveloped his body, but not his soul. When God called for such a fine in- dividual, we suffered a great loss— heaven gained a great man. It is to Mr. Meredith that we, the Class of 1962, dedicate our supplement. Ralph W. Howard It was with regret that we, the Class of 1962, learned that this year was Mr. Howard's last at Fitchburg High School. Mr. Howard, affectionately known to us as Moneybags, was always ready and willing to do more than his share for his Alma Mater. As we say good-by to him, we realize that his retirement ends a tradition at Fitchburg High School. It is unfortunate that incoming classes will never know Mr. Howard personally. Industrial Art Candids Vocational In September of 1944 a four-year vocational course was started for high school boys. Shop and academic work alternated by weeks. Previously there had been two-year vocational courses for boys and girls. The aim of the Vocational High School is to prepare students for profitable employment in particular occupations or fields of work by supplying technical knowledge and developing necessary skills. Occupational training is an important part of the total program. Equal stress is given to the development of interests and attitude for good citizenship. Students attend classes for academic and related technical subjects one week and shop the alternate week. These shop courses include Auto Mechanic, Carpentry, Electrical, and Machine Shops. Qualified seniors may work on alternate weeks in a shop, garage or an industry at their trade. Boys who graduate from the Vocational receive a F. H. S. diploma and a trade certificate. These graduates are qualified to begin employment on skilled jobs. All the boys enrolled in this program are considered members of Fitchburg High School; there- fore they may participate in athletics and extra-curricular activities. Our Vocational students have added greatly to our program at Fitchburg High School and to our city. Cheerleaders Tournament of Roses Parade The Fitchburg High School Band's participation in the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California, was perhaps the most memorable event in 1962 not only for the Band members, but also for the city of Fitchburg. The Band was fortunate to have the support of the community in its efforts to raise the $28,000 necessary to send the 89 musicians to California. Money-raising projects included a paper drive, candy sales, and a concert— all of which were extremely profitable. None of these events, however, was quite as exciting as the Band's actual stay in California. The trips to Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm, the delightful change in climate, the thrill of meeting new people— all combined to make the trip an enriching and rewarding experience. And, of course. Each player deserves hearty applause for his efforts while an encore was earned by Tom Chrost for his touch- downs. Between acts our nationally renowned band stole the show which was brightened by the senior mem- bers receiving awards. The girls basketball game was hard fought, and when we, the Juniors, went down to defeat by a score of 34 to 31 we had the consolation of knowing that we had tried our hardest.
