THE BOULDER VOLENS ET VALENS (Willing and Able) f I ft. o n V- y THE BOULDER — 1955 Dr. Robert H. McCarn Superintendent oj Schools Dr. McCarn is completing his first year at Fitchl)urg as the Class of '55 graduates. We leave with Dr. McCarn our most sincere wishes for a happy and distinguished career. 2 THE BOULDER — 1955 To Our ESTEEMED COACH, ADVISOR, AND FRIEND Who has helped us in countless ways We the Class of 1955 Gratefully dedicate our yearbook. 3 THE BOULDER — 1955 To the Class of 1955. The educational process is an unending one. Each of you is born with innate ability and unique talents. Formal education, which will end for many of your class on June 23, 1955, is merely a means of assisting you to develop these God-given talents and abilities. Some have made the most of this opportunity; others, for a variety of reasons, have failed to do so. You must now face the problems of adult society armed with the knowledge and principles that have been nurtured by the home, the church, the school, and the community. Do not be misled by the apparent pessimistic attitude prevalent today — as evidenced in newspapers, periodicals and other media of communication. The world needs the fresh, optimistic approach of youth. No problem is insur- mountable if attacked with sincere effort, courage and faith. INIATTSON We have lost her presence, but she gave us the essence of her spirit. INIiss Mattson knew what she wanted from life and was not afraid to walk alone toward her goal. She had in her heart the ruggedness and beauty of nature and work; the patience and faith of the gardener and teacher; and the selflessness of a friend and associate. Death does not destroy this spirit. We miss her strong figure standing against our errors, but she has left us the memory for guidance. 10 THE BOULDER — 1955 CLASS OFFICERS DAVID KENNETH HOLMAN Absent he is a character understood, but present he is a force respected Dave — our class president — aspires to high goals — dependable — adds life to any classroom — dresses collegiately — studious ■ — endless ambition — frequently seen driving around in his '54 Ford — loves to dance — intends to further his education at Tufts. IMy tale begins one early fall; To F. H. S. trooped one and all To ope the door of knowledge wide, Discov'ring treasures hidd'n inside. As Freshmen shy our footsteps flew Through halls so strange, through rooms so new. Of homework, lessons, soon we learned; For games and parties gay we yearned. The year sped quickly; soon were we Not timid Frosh but Sophs so free, Full citizens of Fitchburg High, Ambitions reaching to the sky. As Juniors wise we then appeared, In every field our talents cheered. In sports, assemblies, programs, plays, Our valiant efforts brought sweet praise. Too soon this year had passed us by — A Junior Prom, a relay try, A play so fine (it should have won) — Alas, another year was done. 62 THE BOULDER — 1955 As Seniors then we thronged anew Through halls familiar, well-loved too. With friends, their faces smiling, gay, With heads held high we trod the way. In music and dramatics, too. Our talents were displayed anew; Upon the gridiron, in the fray, On courts, in sports, we led the way. We studied hard, we studied long; To College Boards we brought a song (?) We struggled mightily and won; (And now my tale is almost done.) For swift the ever solemn bells, Sweet graduation music swells; Though glad, we're sad, and loath to go, For lips may smile, though step be slow. Now to our class swing wide the doors Of life, of fortune; distant shores May beckon, yet, from year to year Will live our mem'ries, cherished, dear. Thus ends my tale and four fine years; Arise, my classmates, rise with cheers! Dear Class of '55, upraise Your voices to our school in praise! —Nancy Holmes 63 THE BOULDER — 1955 II Known As Favorite Expression Noted for Future Bruce Ahdl Weil, I'll be darned Dimples Criminal lawyer Gerry Adams My word Talking Millionaire Cliff Albert My word Hot Pontiac Machinist Jan Alser What's new Giggle Secretary Hil'billy Amblo Is that a fact Working in a bakery shop Electrician Rut hie Anderson Oh, well Musical ability Music teacher Gail Arnold Well Quietness College Herv Arsenault What do you say Musical instrument Working Mim Assimakcpoulos Brother His brothers' cars Traveling man Bob Bastien Crazy man Trumpet Navy Cindy Bates He's with the boys Blushing Governess Gail Pelair I'm so jealous Dancing Model Masjzie Bcllctetc Cut it out Silence Domestic Judy Bennett Oh Judith Capriciousness Nurse Alice Bergeron Wait a minute Quietness Working Sandy Bjurling Oh yah Saving for future Wild blue yonder Mr. ' B ' Blackwell Wow, would I His female fans G man David B'.ake Hi there Posture Executive Joan Boland And then they took me away Attractive clothes Nurse J. The setting is the living-room of the Wilkins home, Kew Gardens, Long Island 88 On Friday, April 22, our class presented one of the finest plays ever staged in the high school. The warm applause of the audience signified their delight. The play was highlighted by the adept portrayal of Judge Harry Wilkins by Richard Wagner, and the realistic portrayal of Ruth by Louise Wilson. The vivacious character of Miriam Wilkins was vividly depicted by Carole Erickson. The supporting roles were cleverly enacted by those to whom the parts had been given. 89 THE BOULDER — 1955 SENIOR CLASS SONG — 1955 Words hy SUSAN MANGAM Music by RUTH ANDERSON Moderato | '''nN ■ r Jir r„r Ji- LT ri-f 1. The annual Jr. -Sr. Relay was won by the seniors that year but not until our up- hill battle gave way in the final laps. We were never ahead in the race and not far behind at anytime either. President Holman ran one of our fastest laps only to be nosed out at the end. Pete Laine brought our filled cheering section to their feet as his mad dash missed by a few yards of putting us in front. Perhaps those seniors were too much for us, but the heat of the day certainly did not he'p. We did manage to make history with our new styled track shirts.
