Only the birds, soaring nonchalantly in the clear, cloudless sky, were able to detect the origin of this film of anxiety — a regal, white marble temple majestically situated upon the Acropolis, overlooking the entire city. Within this palatial structure, the beautiful goddess Athena, daughter of the almighty Zeus, was strolling about beneath the stately Doric columns. Her classical features, usually calm and impassive, showed signs of unrest. Something was on her mind . . . Early that morning, Athena had called the nine graceful and learned ] Iuses to her side. Before they could occupy the position of the gods' cultural advisors, they had to prove their worth. That was the reason Athena had summoned them. After careful consider- ation, she had finally decided that they were to be the cultural advisors of the Class of 1954 at Fitchburg High School I Since there was such a variety of personalities, abilities, and hidden talents in that class, the Nluses would be tested to the fullest extent! Fully realizing that everything depended on the success of their wards, the Class of 54, the Muses solemnly accepted their Queen s plan. They were determined that their class should rank among the most successful in the history of Fitchburg High. And so it was that the nine Muses established their vantage point atop the great granite rise, Rollstone Hill. Upon their arrival, they set to work at once, eager to meet this unusual class! The first few months of school were rather hectic. Like all their predecessors, the Class of '54 had the usual difficulties in the beginning. Thalia, gay muse of comedy, was constantly on the alert, watching for notes from the fifth floor or from teachers who didn't exist. The Class learned very quickly, however. Why, in record time, almost everyone had developed an uncanny respect for the bell system, especially the tardy bell. Too many unsuspecting victims paid the price of an admit slip the hard way . . . The lessons soon became routine, and everything seemed to be progressing smooth- ly. Time flew by. Then an event took place which made the young Class of 54 sadder and wiser . . . report cards! Melpomene, muse of tragedy, was inclemently harsh, determined to make the Class understand the significance of their education. As a result, everycie worked harder, but Melpomene was hard to please. Of course, just as in anything else, there were light and lively moments, too. Terpsichore, muse of dancing, and Thalia, muse of comedy, helped to make the annual 'ariety Review one of the gayest presentations of the year, a program long to be remembered. ic dAJoulcler ig54 Almost before anyone knew it, the first 'ear had come to a close. One quarter of their task was finished, and the nine Muses were pleased with the results. The second year was also one of excitement. Since more students were added to the original list, however, the Muses had an extra amount of work to do. Everyone worked hard at everything — lessons and extra-curricular activities. In that year, Polyhymnia, muse of eloquence, took charge of the Debating Club. Her sister, Euterpe, helped the song-birds with the chorus work. The Class of '54 certainly was promising! Why, as sophomores, they received honorable mention for fine acting in the annual competitive plays. Once again, time slipped by unnoticed, until one beautiful September day, the Class of '54 became a group of lively juniors, real upperclassmenl Now they were able to elect class officers and an advisor to help the Muses with their task. Terpsi- chore worked twice as hard to make all the class dances a success. Engaging the aid of Erato, muse of live songs and romance, the Junior Prom, The Land of Wishes, was one of the most successful events of the year. Even at the Junior-Senior Relay, the only dark spot in the entire year, spirits were high. Summer vacation brought to a temporary halt all the class activity. Everyone was happy and tired at the end of the year. Thanks to the Muses, the Class of '54 had shown they had plenty of what it takes to be a success. The vacation was an oppor- tunity to store up energy for the most glorious adventure of them all . . . the life of a Senior! In September, everyone came back, ready and alert, rarin' to go! Under the expert guidance of Thalia, Euterpe, and Terpsichore, the year started off successfully with a senior reception for the faculty and a record dance. Thanks to Urania, muse of astronomy, there wasn't a cloud on the horizon! Aside from all the fun and frolic, however, the seniors immediately settled down to their books, realizing that there were college entrance exams and achievement tests waiting for them. This was the year that many serious decisions had to be made. Caliope, muse of rhetoric, was kept busy more than her share of time, trying to prepare college people for their exams in English, French, or Latin. Clio, muse of history, had a prodigious amount of work in straightening out the places and dates of American history. More than one lamp burned the midnight oils during this season . . . After these exams had come and gone, the Class of '54 turned to the lighter side of life once more. The Senior Play, You Can't Take It With You, was next on the busy schedule. Father Time seemed jet-propelled at this point! Before anyone realized it, the trip to Washington was at hand, followed by the gala Senior Prom. A Holiday in Rio. Already graduation was upon them! On that all-important evening which marked the culmination of four years' hard work, the nine Muses sat back in their seats in the front row and surveyed their handiwork. The Class Speaker had already spoken, and the much-desired diplomas were being given out. As each person walked serenely up to the platform, face aglow with pride and enthusiasm, the Muses knew that they had succeeded in their assign- ment. Their wards were ready to embrace the future with open arms; they had opened the doorway to life! — Koula Georgalis S9 ftTCHBUllG PUBLIC LIBRMJ FITGHBUKG. MASS. However, faces became a little sadder, as all realized that soon graduation day would be upon us. A flash came down today from 312 — our own Herbert P. Sullivan and company are ready to embark for Washington. Herewith a warning is given to New York, Philadelphia and all points between and beyond. Nlay 1 through 7 is the danger week. F. H. S. is coming 1 IMr. Carl Perkins will assist Mr. Sullivan in keeping our seniors out of mischief. Fascinating, mirthful, exciting, tremendous - - these are just a few of the exclama- tions describing our class play, You Can't Take It With You presented Friday, April 23, 1954. Our sparkling classmates certainly gave a magnificent performance! Our Senior Prom, scheduled for June 11, should be a gala affair.
