Text from Pages 1 - 168 of the 1950 volume:

FOREWORD The class of 1950 is distinguished by the fact that it stands at the mid-century mark in modern history. The sentiment has often been expressed that each graduating class stands at a crucial point in human history. Two great world conflicts have disfigured the history of the past fifty years. It is obvious to all now, that war is the suicide of civilization. We know that this trend must be changed if humanity is to survive. As we leave this school, each of us will have a dif- ferent job to do in order to earn his living; but all of us face one common task — the making, and the keeping of world peace. Therefore, class of 1950, we must look to the future. How well we remember making our way through the crowds of leering upperclass- men to embark on the frightening journey down the never-ending corridors until finally we sighted our goal — the numbers actually glaring at us — the long sought for homeroom I After the first few days (which we considered nightmares), we finally settled down to our new routine — six-period bell schedules, seven-period bell schedules and rotation of periods. Many of our classmates became acquainted with room 103 almost immediately, and it seems that the same crowd kept going back day after day to keep the teacher company until 2:45. Ah I Those sessions! Well, we got through that first year, making ourselves known by our selection of ch eerleaders and even getting a few of the fellows on th B squad football and basketball teams. Myl Weren't we proud of those boysl Winter passed, spring was quick to follow, and before we knew it, we were cram- ming for exams. Then the day we were waiting for arrived, and none of us were reluctant to lay away our books and enjoy the freedom of the summer again. The following September we returned as sophomores and were joined by many from T. C. We set to work solicitously to develop gray matter cells, necessitated by increased studies. Football and basketball games, plays, debates, and assemblies held our never-failing interest, for we were doing a good part of the participating as well as the spectating. These opportunities for gayety and laughter were eagerly anticipated, for they offered a pleasant and relaxing change from the many hours of seriousness. We were making a name for ourselves with the talent of our many dramatically inclined classmates, not to mention the popular athletes, both boys and girls. Thus, our sophomore year ended, and we welcomed the vacation with open arms. In the fall, as juniors, we felt that at last we had arrived somewhere. We were one of the two upperclasses, and we could righteously look down with an air of tolerance upon our lowly underclassmen. We became very enthusiastic about sports, because a good share of the teams were composed of our own classmates and they played a large part in the many victories we gained. We cho.se Bill Zerlin as our Class President.. Jean MacCracken as Vice-Presi- dent, Phyllis Tarbell as Secretary, and Vern Bruneau as Treasurer, and these officers worked very hard to make the year a success for us. At last, too, we saw what went on at the Junior Assemblies behind the closed doors of the auditorium. 6S 1950 So many things happened during our junior year that it would be almost impos- si!)le to enumerate them, but we enjoyed a full year and sighed with relief when vacation hove in sight. Now we have come to the most wonderful year of all, perhaps because it is our very last year, and we are The Seniors. We cling tenaciously to the few remain- ing months, and feel the satisfaction that goes hand in hand with such a famed class, scholastically, dramatically, and athletically. Again we elected Bill, Jean, Vern, and Phyl as our class officers, and again we were rewarded with the excellent manner in which they managed the affairs of the class. A very sports-minded class, we were loyal rooters for our teams, and t)y this time we really felt they were ours, being composed of so many of our representatives. Too, we have many well-seasoned actors and actresses in our midst, and we seem to be able to hold our own at a debate. Now we, the class of 1950, confidently step out into a future that none of us can foresee. We do so with our heads held high, a smile on our lips and assured that we will take a prominent place in that future for which we have prepared. — Fay Koskinen, '50 69 1950 GENERAL EXCELLENCE PRIZE WINNERS 1915 Raymond T.
