The good-looking young man pictured here was the best choice for president that the class of '49 could have made. A versatile lad. Red has the ability to do everything well. He played as half back on our football team, and a star guard and captain of the basketball squad. Besides these two spor ts, Red has been a rather exceptional track man. In 1947 he won the state 100 yard dash championship. Red has shown his ability in dramatics as well as in athletics. He had roles in both the senior open meeting play, and the senior class play. He also acted as a brilli- ant and charming master of ceremonies at the junior-senior recep- tion and at the variety revue. Being popular with his classmates, Red was chosen as the representative of our school on good gov- ernment day. Basketball 2, 3, 4; Dramatic Club 4; Football 2, 4; Glee Club 2 ; Home Room Representative 2 ; Junior-Senior Relay 3, 4; Student Council 2, 3; Track 2, 3, 4; President of Class 3, 4. SHIRLEY JANE AALTONEN Dainty and neat, a maiden petite. Petite and popular may best describe our efficient class secre- tary. Although she may be small in stature, she accomplishes things in no small way. She has been prominent in Dramatic presentations throughout her high school years. Due to her ex- cellent performance in the open meeting of the Dramatic Club during her Sophomore year, she was awarded the prize for the best actress of the play. Since then she has appeared in junior and senior competitive plays together with the Senior Class Play. Shirley plans to attend college next fall, but as yet is undecided as to where she will go. Mona, our lively vice-president, seems to be able to do every- thing well. She is not only outstanding in extra-curricular activi- ties, but also an exceptionally fine student. Mona is full of life and likes many things. She has fascinated us often with her fine dancing. Her expression and grace are really something to see. As an actress Mona has made a hit in all our dramatic produc- tions. She did especially fine job in Command Performance where her farewell scene moved many of the audience to tears. Mona is also an active cheer leader, who puts her every effort into leading us in our cheers. Good Citizenship Award 4; Best Actress of Competitive plays 3, 4; Senior Class Play. EDWARD PHILIP WALSH 'His value we realize. Eddie, our class treasurer, is a part-timer who works in the school bank. His great popularity is due to the quiet, amiable manner by which he succeeds in making friends. Eddie is also very popular with girls; maybe one of the reasons for this is his excellent dancing. One of the finest saxophone players in the school, he has demonstrated his ability for us at many school functions. Being sports-minded, Eddie plays basketball in a league at the Y . He also ran for us in the junior-senior relay. The Navy is the course which Eddie will chart after graduation. Band 2, 3; Home Room Representative 2; Junior-Senior Relay 3, 4; Orchestra 2, 3. 13 The Boulder ]949 CARL EDWARD ABLETT Bashjulness is an ornament to youth. Eddie is one of those bashful senior boys. He comes from Shirley Center. Eddie does very well in his school work and his name is always on the honor roll. Like quite a few others, he is interested in stamp collecting and has many interesting and valu- able specimens in his collection. Eddie would like to join the air force after graduation. Happy landings, Ed! FRANCES RUTH ADAMS Kind and quiet and always neat, She'll find friends in all she meets. Although Fran is rather shy in the classroom she is really a very gay and lively girl. Her merry smile and happy greetings are responsible for her many friends. One can always count on her to have a good time. Fran is an ardent sports fan being principally interested in swimming. She is always willing to lend a helping hand. R ALPH GWYNNE ADAMS His good humor overcomes all obstacles. Bud can always be identified by his flashy neckties. He is one of the few boys who now wear them all the time and so he takes advantage of the fact. Bud has a nice line of chatter and with it he can persuade any one to do just what he wants. He can also be seen driving his sporty Ford or the family's new Mercury. If you ask him, he will give you a ride. Band 2. FRANKLIN CHARLES ALARIO The world belongs to the energetic. Babe, as he is called by his friends, may be seen working at Brockelman's store at almost any time of the day. He is an ardent sports fan, baseball being the favorite. Babe plans to continue his education after graduation. Band 2; Orchestra 2. 14 The Boulder ]949 MARILYN LOIS ALDRICH As merry as the day is long. Marilyn known as Ollie is one of our happy-go-lucky classmates from West Fitchburg. She has a wonderful smile and her dimples are the envy of everyone. We understand that she is an enthusiastic sports fan and during the winter can usually be found out in her backyard practicing the latest methods. RITA MARY ALLEN She could dance the whole night through. Rita, a girl who possesses an attractive personality and cheery smile, enjoys dancing and has become quite successful at it. In the fall she plans to enter the New England School of Business Science to take up accounting. We wish her success in the future. Basketball 2, 3 ; Dramatic Club 2 ; Volleyball 2, 3, 4. ROWENA JANE ALLEN Full of mischief, a jolly good sport. Jane, a popular, light-haired miss, is a real lover of horses. She has two horses of her own and spends much of her time with them. Being a confirmed movie fan, Jane attends every movie that she possibly can, especially ones with fencing in them. Jane enjoys flying and has taken many trips aloft with friends of hers. After graduation she would like to become an airline hostess. JEAN MARIE AMBLO A quiet manner hid the mischief in her eye: Jean is a carefree type of girl who enjoys dancing to the music of a good orchestra. In her spare time she may be found busily engaged in her favorite pastimes — roller skating and knit- ting. We are told she is quite accomplished in both. After gradu- ation Jean would like to be a stenographer with some large firm. Junior Assembly 3. 15 The Boulder ]949 MARGUERITE MAY AMBI.O Breezy and jolly is she always. A true friend and a conscientious student, Marguerite is always good natured and ready to help anyone in need. The lovely red cheeks and the sweet voice of Marguerite are really something to see and hear. Her favorite sport is skiing and, of course, she excels in it as she does in everything she attempts. Marguerite plans to go to college and to become an airline hostess. Dramatic Club 2; Glee Club 2. NANCY EMILY ANDERSON You can't beat me for all-around cheeriness. A girl who never hurries describes Nan to the letter. She may always be seen sauntering slowly down the corridor. She has merry blue eyes that twinkle mischievously when she smiles. Her favorite pastime is waiting outside a classroom until the last bell has rung. Glee Club 2, 3; Volleyball 2. JAMES ANGELOS The life of all classes, and the death of all teachers. Make, as he is better known to everyone, is truly what his quotation says. He is continually laughing and joking with some- one and usually succeeds in making his companion laugh too. His efforts as a cheerleader for the past four years have made us more lively and peppy at all of our athletic contests. One of his famous sayings is What a boner I just pulled. He can be recognized by his crop of black hair and dashing walk. Make is so small he has to take two steps before he moves. BARBARA ANN ARAUJO A merry heart doeth like a medicine. Because she has a friendly personality and a fine sense of humor, Barb is the type of girl everyone enjoys having around. She has been the captain of many winning teams in gym classes. Her hobbies are dancing, volleyball, and basketball. Her future plans are undecided. Basketball 2, 3; Glee Club 2, 3; Junior-Senior Reception 3; Senior Assembly 4; Volleyball 2, 3, 4;' Variety Review 3, 4. 16 The Boulder 1949 JOAN BEVERLY ATWOOD Shy and demure in looks is she. Joan is a quiet lass with light brown hair. She is extremely well-liked by her classmates and all who know her. A very active person, she particularly enjoys basketball and bowling. Good music and good books occupy permanent places in her heart. During her senior year, Joan was a very valuable member of the class-book committee. After graduation, Joan plans to attend a secretarial school. Basketball 2, 3; Glee Club 2, 3, 4; Junior Assembly 3; Volleyball 2, 3, 4; Write-up Committee 4. CARL GRISWOLD BADSTIIBNER What a wondrous life is this I lead. Carl, one of those tall, dark, silent boys, shows a great interest in the Science Department. He is a lover of sports, enjoys watching the athletic contests as well as participating in them. So far as we know, Carl has no plans for the immediate future, although he is thinking of attending some school of science. Junior Assembly 3 ; Thanksgiving Dance Committee 4. GEORGE ADOLPHE BEAUCHAMP Happiness seems to be made to be shared. Fuzzy can make you grin in a jiffy. His wonderful humor takes away all your worries. Fuzzy, who likes track, can be seen at all of our track teams' meets. Formerly he worked at the Fitch- burg Theatre where he saw all the latest movies, but now his television set takes the place of the movies. Ski Club 4. EUGENE JOSEPH BEAUDETTE Men of jew words are the best. Gene came to us from Leominster High School at the begin- ning of his junior year, but because of his good looks and quiet ways has made inumerable friends during his brief stay. He hopes to play professional baseball when he gets out of school. Good luck, Gene; the Boston Red Sox need a good left-handed pitcher. Baseball 3, 4. 17 CP The Boulder ]949 CLAIRE LUCILLE BEAULAC Quietude with flashes of humor. Claire is one of our modest, unassuming classmates who does everything in a thorough efficient manner. She's of medium height, slim, and has a merry twinkle in her eyes that somewhat belies her nature. Being industrious in her studies, Claire should make good in anything she tries to do after graduation. Basketball 2, 3. ROBERT LEON BEGIN Humor is the harmony in the heart. Bob is a talkative, fun-loving fellow who is always ready for a good time. It can never be truthfully said that Bob has ever been at a loss for words. He is an enthusiastic sports fan who rarely misses a game. He is a very good bowler and belonged to the bowling team at F.H.S. Junior-Senior Relay 3. PAUL JOSEPH BELLETETE You all know him — happy, full of fun, He coaxes a smile from everyone: Paul comes from the little town of South Ashburnham, where he is noted for attending all of the old fashioned square dances. During the winter months he spends much of his time skating on the ponds in and near his home town. Paul spends much of his time at the movies. Paul has no definite plans for the future. ROBERT ARTHUR BERNDT Virtue alone is true nobility. Beans is one of our Turner Hall boys. We hear he is quite good on the basketball floor there. You've heard the saying to be seen and not heard ; that describes Beans' basketball playing. Bob was one of our better ball players in the intra-mural league. He may usually be seen wearing his bright red Monarch jacket. The thing that puzzles us most is, Where did you get the name Beans ? Basketball 3. 18 The Boulder ]949 o WILLIAM EDWARD BERNIER only the ivorld were made of snow. Bill is one of the finest skiers in F.H.S. He eats, sleeps, thinks, and talks skiing. Bill has won quite a few medals for racing on skis but being a little bashful, he doesn't say much about them. Bill was one of our gridiron stalwarts this past season and played a very good game as guard. He has an outstanding personality and all who know him are attracted to him. One of his little known attributes is his musical ability. Why the crew cut all the time, Bill? Band 2, 3, 4; Football 2, 3, 4; Home Room Representative 2, 3; Junior Prom Committee, chairman, 4; Junior-Senior Recep- tion 3; Junior-Senior Relay 3, 4; Round Table 4; Ski Club 4; Student Council 4; Write-up Committee 4. She always tries to get her work done quickly and without bothering anyone. She has a very contagious laugh which is usually accompanied by her cheeks be- coming pink. After high school she plans to go into nursing. Round Table 4. LILLIAN JEANNE BOSSERDET Brooklyn born and proud of it. Lil , as she is better known to her friends, is a girl who is always raring to go. She wears really sharp clothes and can usually be seen with her inseparable friend Nancy. JOSEPH EDGAR ANDRE BOURGEOIS He is often seen but seldom heard. Edgar is a rather quiet studious type of boy who comes from Shirley. You might have seen him driving his new Hudson to school every morning. Edgar doesn't care for sports but does at- tend most of our school functions. He has not made any plans for the future, but at present he is working at a Drug Store in Shirley. 19 The Boulder 1949 DENNIS FRANCIS BRAILEY I'll be merry, I'll be free; I'll be sad for nobody. Dennis is the popular manager of our baseball and basketball teams and he does a good job for both; just ask the boys who play. He is one of the quieter members of our class, although he is very lively with his intimate friends. He has a ready sense of humor and keeps things hopping with his witty remarks in Chem class. We hear he is planning to run for mayor of High- land Avenue. We hope he makes it. Baseball Manager 3, 4; Basketball Manager 3. JACK RICHARD BRAKS They are never alone who are accompanied by noble thoughts. Dick, a very active member of our class, is the treasurer of our student council and editor of the Boulder. He is well-liked by all his classmates. He is a crack at baseball, and outstanding on the basketball court. Although he may appear quiet and rather reserved, he is a fun-loving, good-humored, boy who will certainly go far. Dick plans to enter some field of engineering after gradua- tion. BETTINA BROOKS Silence is more eloquent than words. A quiet girl with beautiful hazel eyes is Tina . She is right at home on a basketball court. Another of her favorite sports is skiing. She has proven her skill in knitting by those sharp sweaters and socks she wears. Her good humor and pleasant ways have won many friends for Tina . Keep that cheery smile and sparkling personality and you will be happy. Although she is undecided about the future, we know she will always be successful. Basketball 2, 3, 4; Volleyball 2, 3, 4; Woman's Club 4. NANCY LOUISE BROWNELL A smile that glows with friendship. Nancy is a snappy little girl with a flair for the unusual. He is quiet in manner but still very active. His favorite outdoor recreations are hunting and fishing, while basketball is his indoor favorite. Since he is adept at taxidermy, Joe can stuff the animals he shoots. Joe in- tends to begin his career as a Navy man in June. ARTHUR LAWRENCE CAPONE He is small, but oh my!! L'll Art or Cap , as he is called by his friends, is one of our outstanding athletes. Cap was chosen the most valuable football player during his senior year and was elected co-captain of the football team. He is the proud owner of one of the best tenor voices in school and is one of the few boys who owns his own car. He is very good-natured and enjoys a good time, although he has his serious moments. He likes all active outdoor sports, especially baseball and football. Some branch of the armed services will be Damon' occupation. futur DAVID WALKER CARLSON He may appear studious, but is not truthfully so. Dave or Brud , as he is called, is one of those happy-go- lucky, extremely cheerful boys who never lets anything bother him. His fine work as manager of the football squad will not be for- gotten for quite a while. Brud's hearty laugh can be heard everywhere, especially in English class. After graduation Dave is very much interested in going to an aviation school in Indiana and we know with his irresistible charm he is sure to have good fortune. DONALD EARL CASWELL Casey would waltz with the strawberry blond and the band played on. Due to Donald's ability to dance, he is much in demand at all dances he attends. He is one of the many boys who is always trying to brighten up a quiet classroom with his never-ceasing pranks. Dick's easy humor and sure-fire wit have left their mark on all of us, but we are none the worse for it. Betty, a versatile Waites Corner belle, is always bubbling over with vitality. She is a Sunday school teacher and in her spare time she is busily occupied with her girl scout troop. He was elect- ed as center to the Worcester County All Star team this year. Jack seems to be quite quiet and slightly cynical to those who don't know him. Although Herman seems to be one of the more quiet fellows of the class, he has made his mark among us. His special interest is skiing, and he can be seen almost any Sunday afternoon during winter practicing his art on some nearby hill. Herman also likes football, and his strong shoulders make him a valuable player on any team. Herman likes most girls, but his special preference is redheads. Joyce would like to be a telephone operator after graduation. ROBERT MARTON KINSMAN His interests range o'er everything. Bob seems to be a quiet fellow around school but those who are acquainted with him outside, know differently. His carefree attitude and his jolly laugh make him a pleasant companion at all times. Among other things, he likes swimming and skiing. Bob has decided to cast his lot with the U. S. Army. 74 CP ? The Soulier ]949 WILLIAM LOUIS OAKS Silence has many virtues. Bill, one of the stalwarts of this years grid team, is one of the quieter members of our class. However, if you bring up a point on which he does not agree, you are in for a good sound argument. Bill enjoys the outdoor life and his favorite way of spending leisure moments is hunting. This easygoing fellow, with his nice Southern drawl, should be a great success in the years to come. ROBERT BIRTRAM STACY I can move fast, but why the exertion? Ginney , as he is known to most of us, is an outdoor man. He loves to hunt and fish — but he dislikes girls. A conscientious individual, we hope he may find time in the future to do the things he enjoys. Bob would like to join the Navy upon gradua- tion. PLEASANT STREET ENTRANCE 75 The Boulder ]949 We the Class of '49 — that has a familiar ring to it, doesn't it? Less than four years ago — September '45 to be exact — we were just a scattered group of individuals waiting and wondering, a little apprehensively, what this high school career we were launching would bring us. Now it is nearly four years later and we really are the Class of '49 waiting now to launch our individual careers again, but still feeling a togetherness with our classmates — a feeling of having shared a great many experiences we will always remember. Let's take a last quick look now at our accomplishments and, maybe, mishaps — at our class history, as it were . . . As a unit, perhaps the thing most of us will remember longest is our athletic prowess. Who among us can forget the thrill of watching our classmates win, say, a football game from a strong opposing team? Following as we did the highly vaunted class of '48, we were at a slight disadvantage to begin with, and those looking forward to the grid season of '48 were more than a little dubious about its outcome. However, much to our joy and pride, it turned out to be one of the best seasons in years. Back in '46, Alex Emma, Tony Petrides, Herb Pandiscio, Bud Stevenson, and Herm Wuoti (then sophomores) were already showing progress on the grid squad, but in '48, as juniors, they really blossomed out, having been joined by Jim Carey, Jack Wofford, Art Capone, and Steve Keoseian. Remember those game-winning placement kicks and the spectacular touchdown runs made by Art Capone? Remember the dependable strength exerted by linesman Alex Emma, Jim Carey, and Jack Wofford, who was named All Northern Worcester County center in '48. Well, came the Fall of '48 and these same Iron-Men — with the added strength of seniors Phil Madonia, Bill Oakes, John Thomas, Bill Bernier, and Red Goguen and the rest of the team — made grid history by completing F. H. S.'s season with seven wins, one tie, and two defeats — the best record since 1935! The Thanksgiving game with Leominster was a thriller — a hard fought contest which we won 13-7, and which brought to the forefront a new hero, '49'er Herb Pandiscio who really played the game of his life. So, years from now when we look back on our class's grid history, we will certainly be able to do so with pride. Our basketball history, 'though not so spectacular, is still noteworthy. Here again we had to follow a highly successful '47-'48 team and, though the over-all record of wins and losses isn't as good, we still had first-rate individual stars. Starting out as sophomores on the B squad, Anthony Montesion, Joe Scola, Bud Stevenson, Red Goguen, Dick Miner, and Jack Wofford piled up the fine record of 14 wins out of 17 starts, and then as juniors, they could point with pride to the fine record of both squad A and squad B. As seniors we were especially proud of high-scoring, basket-makers Dick Miner, Bud Stevenson, Joe Scola, Red Goguen, Dick Braks, Leon Cote, and Art Capone. Some of these contests were really thrillers — that Gardner game we won 31-20! What a game with St. Bernard's 39-34, our team was top scorer of course! Finally, came a major upset of the year, our defeat of Worcester Classical 34-32! We won't be able to forget those games easily! In track, as in tennis, individual stars really shine. Our class was especially fortunate in having stand-outs in both fields. Since we were freshmen, Irving Hecker has been 76 P ? The Boulder ]949 the undisputed tennis king of F. H. S. In track, we were lucky enough to claim Red Goguen and Dick Miner as classmates. Red, who was the state's 100-yard schoolboy champion in his sophomore year, also held a key position in last year's New England champion schoolboy relay team. Dick has a fine record as a half-miler. Baseball somehow just doesn't gain the prominence other sports get at F. H. S. — guess the others just manage to steal its thunder — but that isn't saying the fellows who play it aren't potential Bob Fellers'' and Lou Boudreaus . Our senior stand-outs this year were Gene Beaudette, Jack Wofford, Bub Welterlen, Joe Scola, Bud Stevenson, Art Capone, and Dick Braks, most of whom were veterans of many hard fought battles on the diamond. They're the ones, too, who saw action several times in those pitched battles against a seasonal faculty team ! Not to forget the girls and their sports and the fellows who took part in the intramurals, here's a last look at them, too! Our gals, as freshmen, made a rather in- auspicious start by getting those field day marching drills just a wee bit mixed up (remember — or would you rather forget?) ; but since then, they've really gone to town with their intramural volleyball and basketball teams. Senior champs this year in both sports were the Westies (who, however, didn't all come from over there. ) Then for the fellows, interest in intramural basketball was one hundred per cent in our senior year, and we were proud of the seniors on the Champion team, the Staggs , who put on a good show (and how!) playing against the faculty. Our plays, proms, Junior-Senior Reception, record dances, Variety Revue — all these and a dozen other extra-curricular activities, integral parts of our F. H. S. careers, will always form a big share of our best memories of high school. First, let's look at our parties and proms. Our class really knew how to give them. We started out as freshmen and sophomores giving record dances, but they never fully realized what we could do until our Junior Prom time came around and we presented them with a Fiesta — and it really was one! Bill Bernier and his committee (with the help of faculty advisers) worked hard to attain the effect, and it certainly was a success. Murals depicting Latin American dancers, merry-go-rounds, life size figures of bull fighters, a large red and gold awning for the chaperones (not old crones!) to sit under, red lights to make the whole holiday more effective — well ! And then, that Latin music to dance to — guess everyone felt a bit Spanish that night! No less a success was our Thanksgiving dance, though part of that success might have been attributed to the morning's victory, the complete rout of the Leominster eleven. The football tinge was everywhere from the decorations to the clever dance programs and the dance chairman himself, hero of the game, Herb Pandiscio. Really appropriate. The Senior Prom is in the capable hands of Dick Miner, as chairman, and we expect this to be an event which will be long remembered. The dramatic achievements of our class have not been overlooked, but they are omitted from this class history inasmuch as they appear elsewhere in this book under Footlights and Spotlights . Next, a glance at our governing fellow-students, those engaged in journalistic or literary enterprises, and others similarly employed in worthy pursuits. Our Student Council members have really made a name for themselves. As juniors, Dick Braks, as vice-president, and Dick Miner, as treasurer, were already top dogs in the new associa- 77 The Boulder 1949 tion. Then Gerry Darcangelo and Dick Braks were chosen Editors of the Student Council Review . This year, Gerry Darcangelo was president of the whole shebang. Also, he was our state senator on Good Government Day — gad, what power! Art Capone was our district representative. We elected and sent Mona Irvine to the D. A. R. Convention as our Good Citizen from F. H. S. As for journalistic and literary enterprises, the two stand-outs are the Red Gray and the Boulder. The editors and their respective staffs had to keep their shoulders to the wheel and noses to the grindstone, but all felt it was well worth the effort. Red Gray editor, Ellen Manninen, assistant, Helen Rahnasto, and Boulder editor, Dick Braks, and assistant, Ruth Chalmers, certainly felt those responsibilities, but also the satis- factions that came with their positions. Now last, but far from least, a commendation of our officers who served us faith- fully and well during our junior and senior years. They've been outstanding in other ways, too — Red as an all-around athlete, Mona and Shirley in many fields, but mainly as talented dancers, and outstanding students, and Eddie for the great trust placed upon him. We weren't a class of prodigies, geniuses, or the like, but we did boast a fairly good number of brains right through four years. This was shown pretty well when the Gold F's were awarded to ten per cent of our class — a goodly percentage. We boasted mathematicians and scientists in Bill Walsh, Dick Wilson, Phil Simon, Larry Kabatch- nick, Boy Naylor, Jim Goodspeed and Louis Rossner, to name a few, and also quite a number of Commercial Course sharks — Irma Siitonen with six A's and Frances Adams with five — Wow! In athletics we went ahead like a beacon light, with stars in every sport. We are mighty proud to be the graduating class on the 100th anniversary of F. H. S. as a free public high school; after all, that only happens once in a hundred years. We can look back upon our history with pride, and look forward to our future with confidence. Shirley Aaltonen Treasurer Richard Miner 90 CP p The Boulder 3949 The play's the thing , said Shakespeare, and we the class of '49 agree. The thespian achievements of the class of '49 began with The Bard at Bakersville High , the one act play presented in our sophomore year at open meeting. But, woe to us, we lost, even though Shirley Aaltonen's red flannels — and Shirley herself — made a big hit with the audience! Then came our junior year and we had three chances to prove our ability — dramatic and otherwise. First came the Variety Revue. Our vice- president, Mona Irvine, did a swell job in her dual capacity as dance director and danseuse , and our junior class was otherwise well represented too. In the chorus numbers (warning, chorus girls watch out!) were Gerry Darcangelo, Jim Goodspeed, Jim Angelos, Dick Miner, and Art Capone, who also doubled as a crooner, while Larry Kabatchnick orated as a negro preacher. Bill Walsh and his quintet made with the music ; Mona Irvine, Shirley Aaltonen, Ruth Clark, Nancy Smith, and Beverly Chase gracefully performed in the feature dances, and Evelyn Secino presented some of those wonderful, amazing acrobatic specialties. Our next chance to perform came round with the Competitive Plays of '47 and this time our bid for victory was with scenes from Best Foot Forward . Remember Mona in her role as the glamorous movie star, and Gerry as the befuddled college boy with two women on his hands? The cast of clever supporting actors included Junior Webster, Herb Pandiscio, Ruth Chalmers, Shirley Aaltonen, Madeline Senn, Pat Hibbard, and Laurence Kabatchnick. Guess it just wasn't forward enough 'cause the seniors carried the day and we said wait til next year! Well anyway, we got even with them in the Junior-Senior reception, which to put it mildly, was a howling success. This, of course, wasn't a strictly drama-tic affair, but certainly, bigger corn-fed hams couldn't have been found in Kansas. Then, we became dignified seniors and fortune smiled upon our efforts ; we won that coveted cup in the Com- petitive Plays with our presentation of Command Performance . Mona Irvine won the award for being best actress of the evening, and Larry Kabatchnick, the award for best actor, with Gerry Darcangelo coming in for honorable mention. As for the Variety Revue who, but who, could forget some of those really classic numbers — like the bathing suits in By the Sea and also Chloe as interpreted by those two madeup seniors, Rudy Minichiello and Gerry Darcangelo? Then too Red Goguen, our president, was the perfect M. C. and Mona again exercised her ability as dance director and dancer, while Phyllis Tucker plied the 88 ivories, and turned in a swell performance as accompanist. However, our senior play really climaxed the whole shebang; our fervent thanks go to Cornelia Otis Skinner and Emily Kimbrough for their wonderful play, Our Hearts Were Young and Gay . For with their help and Miss Lillian Taylor's the entire cast had the audience rolling in the aisles, and then sitting up for more! Mona Irvine, as Cornelia Otis Skinner, and Shirley Aaltonen, as Emily Kimbrough, delighted the audience with their grace, ease, and smoothness in the long leading roles. Thanks to the cast for ending our history in the field of drama with such a success ! All our dramatic success is not attributable to our own talents and work, but to the never-ceasing help of our dramatic director, Miss Lillian Taylor. It is she who kept these performances functioning smoothly. In recognition of this, we senior members of the dramatic club extend to her our sincere thanks for the help she has given us. 91 tf5 TheBoulier ]949 nOur Hearts Were Young and Gay by Cornelia Otis Skinner and Emily Kimbrough Dramatized by Jean Kerr THE CAST Steward .....
