Ray is the extremely popular personality who has been our class president for the past two years. He has done much for his class in this capacity. Among the many capacities in which he has served is that of Senator from this district during the Youth Gov- ernment Day at the State House in Boston. In spite of some un- fortunate accidents, Ray has proved himself a great football player and trackman. He also possesses an unusual amount of great scholastic ability. During his high school years Ray's sincerity and friendliness have won him many lasting friendships. Baseball 2, Basketball 2, 3, Relay 3, 4, Football, Track 2, 3, 4, Dramatic Club, Class Play, Competitive Plays, Gold F, Good Government Group, F. H. S. Delegate to Boys' State, Mass. She loves to ski, and has quite a talent for music. Her sparkling personality has resulted in her being chosen presi- dent of the Horizon Club. Her achievements are not limited to the social aspects of school life as she has been an outstanding student throughout her high school career. Band 1, 2, 3, 4, Orchestra 1, 2, Student Council, Dramatic Club, Red Gray 3, 4, Basketball, Gold F 4 JANET LEE PEARSON None named her but to praise. Janet, an honor student, is one of the most capable and out- standing members of the class. She belongs to a number of clubs outside of school. Jan enjoys all kinds of music and exhibits her musical ability by playing the drums in our school band. In sports she likes basketball and Softball. She is a good pitcher in the latter sport. Knitting is her hobby. Janet's future lies in the field of nursing. Dramatic Club 1, 2, 4, Basketball 1, 2, Home Room Repre- sentative 3, Red Gray 3, 4, Band 2, 3, 4, Class Play Chairman, Gold F JOSEPH GUSHING, JR. He can do 7nany things well. Joe Gushing is one of the truly versatile athletes in our class. He not only stars in baseball and football but is a skier of championship caliber, having won the Massachusetts Junior Ski Championship. Joe is a very capable student. His competency in student activities is shown by the fact that he was elected treas- urer of his class and F. H. S. representative to the Good Govern- ment program held in Boston. Although as yet he has no definite plans for the future we have no doubt that he will become emi- nently successful in any field of endeavor. Basketball 2, Relay, Student Council, Junior-Senior Reception Committee, Christmas Party 3, Class Book Committee, Gold F, Good Government Group 4, Baseball, Football 2, 3, 4 12 The Boulder 1948 RICHARD WALTER AHLIN, JR. All great men come jrom the country. Jiggs is the tall, casual boy we see strolling through the corridors in his moccasins, who served as treasurer of our class during the junior year. He has a talent for singing and dancing, and is a born comedian. These talents do not exceed his dramatic ability, however. Jiggs is always smiling, even after a hard night of fighting fires in the wilds of Westminster. His pet peeve is long skirts. Jigg s plans for the future are not yet complete. Football 2, 3, Junior-Senior Reception Committee, Christmas Party, Class Treasurer 3, Dramatic Club, Band, Orchestra 2, 3, 4, Class Play, Senior Dues Committee 4 JOHN JAMES ALARIO A quiet mannered lad with mischiej in his eye. Johnny is the bashful type, being particularly shy with the opposite sex. Although his outside interests are many, he still manages to keep up with his studies. John can always be seen busily working at the meat counter in Brockelman's. Although he doesn't participate in sports, he is an enthusiastic fan. Band 1, 2, 3 JANE EVA ALBERT Her good nature is proper soil upon which virtue grows. Red hair and sparkling eyes — that identifies Janie. She is one of our illustrious part-timers and divides her time between the Red Gray and the Boulder. Wherever she goes there are one or two shadows accompanying her. Jane is always ready for a good time, and although she does not possess a tremendous appetite, she has a fondness for two lunch periods. HALSEY LEONARD ALLEN, III And still the wonder grew, That one small head could carry all he knew. Halsey is perhaps our most brilliant scholar since he has been on the special and high honor rolls throughout his school career. He is a back stage member of the Dramatic Club, a member of the Red Gray Board, the editor of the 1948 Boulder, a member of the student council, and of our victorious relay team. He has served on various dance committees. The sports which he enjoys are skiing and hunting. Most of his weekends and vacations are spent in Sterling at his uncle's farm and from this he draws his life ambition to be a soil chemist. He is planning to enter Cornell University after graduation. Red Gray 2, 3, 4, Junior-Senior Reception Committee 3, Relay, Dramatic Club 3, 4, Student Council, Round Table, Class Book Committee, Gold F 4 JOHN JOSEPH ALLEN Let each wan pass his days in that wherein his skill is greatest. Jack is one of the ardent auto-mechanics and has a car of his own. His love for things mechanical has shown itself by his selec- tion of the 'Vocational Coiirsi .iiul in devoting all his spare time to his own car and to those ot others who are less gifted in the art of keeping the wheels turning. His hobby is both big .ind midget car racing. 13 VtTQHBORG PUBLIC VIRGINIA KDITH ANDRIiASSON Tall, straight, and slender. Virginia is that tall pretty lass with a contagious smile. She is friendly and very popular with everyone. Am;)ng her favorite- pastimes are horseback riding, dancing, and moving pictures. Vir- ginia is one class member who has announced her engacjement. The best of luck, Virginia! Junior Picnic Committee ROBERT THOMAS ARCHIBALD A man must devote some of his time to other things than study. Bob or Arch, as he is called by his friends, is one of our better tennis players. He is a good student and Physics is one of his best subjects. While quiet and somewhat serious he has served on many of the social committees and in these capacities revealed another side which has endeared him to those with whom he worked. His mind is not entirely on his studies however as his wavy hair has captivated the heart of many young ladies. In this respect we may add that Bob needs no compass to find one of our neighboring towns. Tennis 3, 4, Class Book Committee BEVERLY PRISCILLA ASHE Thou art small, hut thou shalt grow. Though Bev is one of the smallest members of our class, she gets around faster than most of us, especially in crowds. She is full of fun and mischief and enjoys all sports. An active member of the Scouts, she looks forward to the summer camping trips. Her future plans are to be a telephone operator. Glee Club JEANNETTE THERESA AUBUCHON Laughing and gay and full of fun. Jeannette is one of the outstanding members of the Glee Club and has a beautiful soprano voice. She enjoys all kinds of sports and attends all our games. She has several hobbies, chief of which is collecting pictures of Hollywood stars, and going to the movies. We are told she plans to follow in the steps of Florence Nightin- gale. Volleyball 3, Basketball 3, 4, Dramatic Club, Glee Club 1, 2, 3, 4, Gold F DOROTHY ANN BAHO A lassie dark with raven hair. Dot's deep brown eyes reveal that she is one of those girls who are full of mischief and glee, a happy-go-lucky person. She has a merry, penetrating laugh. In sports she particularly likes to play basketball and she lives for roller skating. Dot plans to be a telephone operator. 14 RONALD BALABAN Born and bred in Brooklyn — proud of il luo. Balli, coming from Brooklyn, joined us in our junior year. He played football and has been a member of the track team, do- ing rather well in both sports. He is a nice dancer and enjoyed dancing at lunch. He has the quality of making friends and keep- ing them. May he always remain that way. Junior-Senior Reception Committee 3, Football, Track, Relay 3, 4 ANNA BALDUCCI A bonnie wee lassie. Anna is one of the shortest girls in the senior class but makes up for it with her personality. She is very proud of her long, brown hair. We wonder how she manages it. She can usually be seen rushing to and fro from the school library, as she is one of our part-tfmers working for Miss Sherwin. She plans a business career. Basketball 2, 3, Volleyball 3 NATHALIE JOANNE BARHOLM Mild mannered in all she does. Nathalie is studious and thoughtful, well-liked by all who know her. Although she is generally quiet, Nathalie can hold her own in any bit of activity. Her devoted friend. Dot, is nearly al- ways seen with her. Youth Library Committee 3, Gold F CONSTANCE NANCY BARONE A merry amiable little lass. Connie is cheerful, happy-go-lucky, has a friendly smile for everyone and adds gaiety wherever she goes. One of our bus pupils, she is one of those lucky people who are never marked tardy. She spends most of her time helping her father in Barone's Pharmacy in the eastern section of the city. Dramatic Club 1, 2, Basketball 1, 2, 3 EVERETT ELLON BARROWS, JR. Young fellows will be young fellows. Everett has blonde wavy hair. He is called Blondie by many of his female friends. He has a likeness for the opposite sex and vice versa. Although he doesn't take part in many of our school activities, we know his outside interests are many. He is always neatly groomed and well turned out without resorting to extreme styles. HAZEL BASILIC) An ounce oj mirth is worth a pound oj sorrow. Hazel is one of our part-timers who mix work and school in apparently well-halanced proportions. She hates to hurry allow- inn the world to go by at its own pace, but when something re- quires doing Hazel achieves a surprising agility which sends her down the corridor with her brown tresses flying. We'd like to know where she gets her rosy cheeks. Volleyball 2, Basketball 2, 3, 4 HELEN JENNIE BATURA As merry as the day is long. Helen, a pretty girl who loves to dance, can always be seen dancing at second lunch with her many admirers. We will truly miss her pleasing personality and cheery smile which should prove of great advantage in whatever field she may choose a career. Junior-Senior Reception Committee 3, Volleyball 2, 3, 4, Basketball 1, 2, 3, 4 GEORGE ADOLPHE BEAUCHAMP No worries ever trouble him. Although George only entered F. H. S. in his senior year, he has already made a favorable impression with his pleasing person- ality. George's main athletic interest is track and he should make a good addition to the high school track team. In his spare time George works at the Fitchburg Theater as an usher. Track, Relay 4 JEAN ELLEN BEAUMONT shall endeavor to enlighten all with wit. Beau is one of our dance enthusiasts. She enjoys good music especially Gershwin and Kern. Her pleasing personality is known to us all and she is forever laughing. We learned that she likes to write and does it well. She thrives on Italian food. Is that what keeps her slim ? Dramatic Club 1, 2, Junior Picnic Committee, Glee Club 1, 4 CHARLOTTE MAE BEER Saje within her heart nestles the seed oj perjection. Chili is all of five feet tall and has laughing blue eyes. She has a peculiar hobby — saving pennies. She is also adept at playing the piano and is quite artistic. Hailing from West Fitchburg, she is a good student and a sincere friend. Junior-Senior Reception Committee 3, Class Book Committee, Gold F, Home Room Representative, Basketball 4, Volleyball 1, 2, 3, 4 16 EDWARD RUSSELL BEER Feic ivords suffice. Although Eddie is one of the more reserved members of our class, he is an all-around fellow. Besides being interested in all types of outdoor sports, he has done exceptionally well in his col- lege course studies. He is not certain of his future, but as long as he is able he will defend Waites Corner against all comers. Relay 3 RITA ANN BEGNOCHE Small but bright and friendly with all. Rita has light hair, gray eyes, and is short of stature. When- ever you see her walking down the corridor or in the various classes, she has a friendly smile for everyone. In her spare moments you will find her either roller skating at Whalom Rink or dancmg somewhere. After graduation Rita will continue working in the office at Aubuchon's Hardware. JOHN QUENTIN BENNETT A star in his own right — Every inch a champion. As a member of a class famed for individual versatility, Johnnie is one of our most versatile athletes. He has made quite a name for himself in the field of track, having won the Massa- chusetts State Cross Country championship. He also carried off honors in the indoor mile. In addition he was promising on the basketball court in sophomore and junior years and a power on the hockey courts of this district. He is known as a ladies man around school, but most of his time is taken up with one special person. His career was cut short in football due to an injury received in a inid-season game. He was also on the Junior-Senior Relay and the Bchnont Relay Team. He's a ladies' man in a quiet sort of way. He hails from Cleghorn. Class Color and Flower Coininittee 3, Football, Track, Relay 3, 4, Basketball 4 17 BETTY RUTH BEVER There is no genius in lije like ihe genius of energy. Betty is one of those persons who can comhinc intL-llcct with a wonderful personality. Her popuhirity is based on her ability to lend a helping hand wherever needed. He's the kind of fellow who'd do anything for a friend. ANDRONIKI BILIOURIS Would that I were a boy so that I could play all sports. Niki, as we know her, is another of our sports-minded class- mates, and a loyal rooter of the Red Raiders. A member of the general course whose favorite study has been English, Lorraine has left with us an impression of a person char- acterized by quiet reserve, conscientiousness, and a pleasant dispo- sition. While she has taken part in the school basketball program, her interests have been outside of school and have been centered in dancing, roller skating, and the movies. Lorraine has given no indication of her plans for later life, but we feel that she has a successful and happy future awaiting her. Basketball 1 20 ELTON SHERWOOD CALL There is mischief in this man. That whizzing object which picks up speed on Water Street, gains more momentum on Mam, becomes invisible on Prichard, and blasts through the east entrance is Mary. She is never still. Tall and sandy-haired, shy until you know him. Chick regards girls with an air of indifference. Being what we would call a typical outdoor boy, he engages in every sport from basketball to fishing. Basketball, Volleyball 1, 2 74 The Boulder 1948 In the fall of '44 the distinguished class of '48 entered Fitchburg High School. Even in that first year the scholastic ability of the class was presaged in every marking period and the athletic prowess, which was to prove so much to our credit, was fore- cast by two members, Mike Martin and Gordon Ringquist, making their letters in football. During our first year the atom bomb was tested in New Mexico and the Euro- pean War drew to a close. The following summer the War in the Pacific ended. During our second year, the crowd from Teachers' College joined us and imme- diately made their appearance felt. As our class became more and more active in ath- letics, the number of games won by the school increased. This year we tied Leominster 6-6 in our annual football game. Principal James A. Chalmers gave a flag to the school. Irene Conlon, Jean Hopley, and Barbara Roy won the school banner award for design- ing the flag. Joe Cushing won the Massachusetts Downhill Junior Skiing Champion- ship. In June of our Sophomore year Jane Wolfe was sent as a delegate to the 21st National Convention of the American Red Cross held in Philadelphia. During our third year the class of '48 really started to show its mettle. Election of class officers was held and on the first ballot Ray Ablondi was the unanimous choice as class president. This had never happened before in the history of our school. The other officers were Loris Lakso, vice-president; Richard Ahlin, treasurer; and Janet Pearson, secretary. A new principal, Bertrand W. Hayward, came during our third year. We beat Leominster by the score of 7 - 6. The class of '48 won the Open Meeting of the Dramatic Club with the comedy, The Fighting Littles. More than 90 members of the class appeared in the hilarious skits and take-offs presented during our reception tn the seniors. We won the Junior-Senior Relay Race, one of the few classes to win as Juniors. Our president, Ray Ablondi, was chosen by World War I and II veterans of the faculty to represent the school and Fitchburg Post No. 10, American Legion at the Boys' State program held at Amherst. There Ray was selected to be one of two boys representing Massachusetts at National Boys' State, Washington, D. C. Nancy Derderian was sent by Fitchburg Post No. 10, American Legion Auxiliary to the Girls' State Program at Bridgewater. Joe Cushing was chosen as All Northern Worcester County half-back. A real addition to our class was Corky Ervin, who gave a tremen- dous lift to all our athletic teams. The climax to our high school career, the fourth year, was as full of success as the preceding years. The officers elected were Ray Ablondi, president ; Loris Lakso, vice- president; Joseph Cushing, treasurer; and Janet Pearson, secretary. We were the first class to have the privilege of electing a class adviser rather than accepting an appointee. We, the class of 1948, chose Herbert P. Sullivan as our adviser. This year we beat Leomin.ster 1 3 - 0. The teams of the future will never forget the names of Cushing, Ablondi, Duncan, O'Connor, Berndt, Martin, Balaban, Gates, McBride, Turcotte, Fife, Crohan, Ervin, Thoma, Shea, and Van Nostrand. Boys of their caliber will be hard to replace. All Northern Worcester County Awards for First Team went to Corky Ervin, Joe Cushing, Bucker Shea and Hans Thoma. A new football plan, a game between the All Stars of Worcester County vs. the City of Worcester AH Stars was held at Holy Cross College. Joe Cushing and Corky Ervin were our repre.sentatives 75 The Boulder 1948 in that game. Joe Cashing repeated the success of liis sophomore year wlien he again won the Massachusetts Downhill Junior skiing championship. Tlie class of 'AH is one of the few classes to win the Open Meeting award twice in succession. We won again as .seniors with The Drums of Oude .starring Nancy Copeiand, Ray Ablondi, and Jiggs Ahlin. Johnny Bennett and Jimmy Gallagher brought Fitchburg into the limelight in a new branch of sports at our school — cross country running. The boys competed against the pick of the schoolboys in the East. Johnny won the Worcester Knights of Columbus cross country race for Worcester County High Schools. He climaxed this by winning the Massachusetts State Cross Country Title at Belmont. He placed third in the New England Championships at Brunswick, Maine, and third in the Eastern States Cross Country Championship at East Orange, New Jersey. Both boys won further acclaim in the indoor track meet at the Boston Garden. Johnny won the senior mile with a time of 4 minutes 45.3 seconds. That same night Jimmy was invited to compete against the pick of New England milers and he ran third with a time of 4 minutes 39 seconds. Ray Ablondi took third place in the three hundred yard dash. These records are exceptional, considering that there is no indoor track at F. H. S. Lorraine Kasari, editor-in-chief of the Red Gray won fourth place in the National Doehla Art Con- test. A painting by Barbara Roy was exhibited at R. H. White's art exhibition. Anita Kruckley was State representative to the National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago. Nancy Watson, president of the student council, was chosen for outstanding scholar- ship, citizenship, leadership, and dependability to represent the school at the D. A. R. Good Citizenship Pilgrimage at the Hotel Somerset. In scholarship awards our class was second to none, attested by the fact that fifty members of the class received the Gold F coveted award, the largest number ever awarded. Johnny Bennett won three Silver Skates Derby Championships — juvenile, intermediate, and junior titles during his school career. He also was an important cog in the Fitchburg Hockey team. Another stellar member of the Fitchburg Hockey Club was Aubrey Lawrence. Graydon Erick- son, a returned veteran, won the longest standing ski jump in the ski events held at Lancaster. Ray Ablondi was the state senator from the 3rd district and Joe Gushing was the representative from the 15th district on Good Government Day, held at Boston. This was the first time Good Government Day was held in Massachusetts. Our class gave a rollicking performance of Dear Ruth with Alida Erickson in the title role. We took over the class of '49 in the Junior-Senior Relay Race, establishing ourselves as one of the few two time winners. The Exchange Club of Fitchburg in- stituted an annual award for the four outstanding scholar-athletes in Fitchburg — two from Fitchburg High School and two from St. Bernard High School. Ray Ablondi and Joe Gushing were fittingly honored as high honor students and outstanding athletes. James Durbin was awarded a certificate of distinguished performance for ranking in the top 10% in the national Pepsi-Cola scholarship examination. By a vote of the class John F. Murphy was selected graduation speaker. To achieve this honor a pupil must have qualified for a Gold F. Finally, it was most fitting that the best class that ever attended Fitchburg High School should graduate under the inspirational guidance of Laurence H. Scanlon, Principal. - This is the record of the Class of 1948. Such a class as ours cannot fail to do well throughout life. We will most certainly bring credit to F. H.
