BOULDER V G, 179, TH f S-1 Lb 194 7 Q A 1 BERTRAND V . HAYWARD The Class of 1947 has been fortunate in being under the guidance of Mr. Hay- ward. His talks, personality, and friend- ly manner will be long remembered. His new ideas and spirit have made an in- teresting year for us. We regret that he cannot continue longer here to develop fully the new goals he has set up this year. We wish him the best of success in ,his new position. LAURENCE H. SCANLON Mr. Laurence H. Scanlon became as- sistant principal of Fitchburg High School on February 1, 1947. He will assume the duties of principal September 3, 1947. Our acquaintance with Mr. Scanlon began with his serving as faculty adviser ior the Junior Prom. This friendship was enhanced by the many helpful acts he performed for us as a class. His fairness as assistant principal has endeared him to all. The Boulder welcomes Mr. Scan- lon to the office of assistant principal, and extends to him the best wishes of the class for his success in the future as prin- cipal. PAGE 2 194 7 BOULDER STEPHEN T. WOODBURY The Class of 1947 heartily congratulates Mr. Stephen T. Woodbury on becoming assistant principal. He has shown out- standing abilities in working with the student council. We feel sure that his work as assistant principal will be equal- ly outstanding. FRANK M. HOWE The absence of our good friend, Mr. Howe, fills us with a sincere feeling of regret. Patiently and unceasingly, he worked to help us as students. Seldom will we have, we know, the opportunity of acquaintance with a wiser and more kindly helpmate in the course of our lives. Therefore, we bid him farewell with the hope that he will find health, happiness, and good fortune during the rest of his life. BOULDER PAGE 4 4 7 BOULDER yy-- -ys -y - -yy. Schubert In 1942 Gene Schubert came to the General Electric Research Laboratory as a chemical engineer. He con- tributed to the development of G-E Permafil, a new type of synthetic resin which has led to a unique type of insulating material, and was in charge of the pilot plant which was set up for the production of such materials during the war. Now, four years later, he is in charge of all chemical engineering activity in theRe- search Laboratory; he supervises projects going on in the silicone fields, in the rocket fuel fields, and may soon be work- ing on projects in the brand new field of nucleonics. His work is in the engineering side of chemical reactions. It is called process development — the study of how to obtain higher yields of chemicals, better prod- ucts, at lower costs. In his work with rocket fuels he is interested in how they are made and how to make them more effective rather than in their use. General Electric Company, Schenectady, N. Y. Gene worked summers in Kansas City as an office boy. This experience — running errands, observing business methods, doing some bookkeeping — gave him a knowl- edge and appreciation of how business operates. After attending the Jr. College of Kansas City, he went to the U. of Illinois for two more years and received a B.S. degree. This was followed by Master's and Doctor's degree from Pennsylvania State College. Gene was an active member in fraternities and honor- ary societies. Now at 31 he is using his knowledge of working with others to help him do a good job as a leader in his work at the Research Laboratory.
