BOULDER 1940 Herbert Edward Halliday Nothing is more valuable to a man than courtesy. Teddy is one of our more prominent senior boys. Beside being vice-president of both the Pep and Glee Clubs he busies himself with athletics. Perhaps he cultivated his preference for dim lights and smooth dancing in New York, where lives a fairer damsel than all. As for the future, Ted's headed for the University of Washington where he will study forestry. Football 3, 4, Pep Club, vice-president, Dramatic Club, Glee Club, Pep Dance Committee, Write-up Committee, Class Prophecy, Senior Class Play 4. Olavi Heimo Halttunen The ink of the scholar is more sacred than the blood of the martyr. As Olavi is a marshal on the fourth floor corridor, he is quite a familiar figure to us all. He has a hobby quite different from anyone else's, which is the prognostication of the results of such contests as football, baseball, boxing, and track. Optometry is the field that interests Olavi as a life work. Junior Relay Team 3, Collector of Class Dues 3, 4, Dramatic Club, Class Prophecy, Assist- ant Councillor, Senior Class Play 4. Bernard Peter Hart True to his word, his work, and his friend. Bunny was known to all of us as a right guard par excellence. During the football tilts with our rivals his number, 18, could al- ways be seen in the midst of th e throng. Although he isn't large he has the tenacity and fighting spirit of a bull-dog and a never-say-die spirit. His favorite hobby is shooting and we can well believe that he does a good job of punching out the bullseyes. His ambition is to prepare himself to be a veterinary. Football 2, 3, 4, Relay 3, Round Table 4. Donald Bernard Hawthorne He is merry as a cricket. Don is one of our noisiest seniors who believe in being heard as well as seen. We wouldn't call studying his favorite pastime. He is one good athlete whom we couldn't do without on the football field or indeed in baseball. His captivating smile and husky body make him a popular figure about the school. His gallant walk makes O it easy for him to carry two or three cases of Taters. Football 2, 3, 4.C VC» « t» v J n'— Alice Estella Holmes Honest labor bears a lovely face. Alice is noted for her exceptional ability in playing the Hawaiian guitar. This is her hobby, and one which affords not only herself but others a great deal of pleasure. Alice is also well known for her friendliness. She is quite studious, and intends to enter the State Teachers' College after graduation. Dramatic Club 2, 3, 4. Laila Viola Honkala Happiness consists in activity. Such is the constitution of her nature. Laila is one of the scholarly members of our class. She can be seen hurrying to and fro from the library, for she is Miss Sherwin's efficient secretary. Her chief hobby is reading, and much of her time is devoted to good literature. Laila hopes to become a secretary after graduation. Dramatic Club 2. Hazel Alice Hooper They are never alone that are accompanied with noble thoughts. Cheerful happy-go-lucky Hazel is more willing to laugh than be serious. That friendly smile has made her popular among her friends. One of her favorite subjects is sewing. Hazel's work on the Red and Gray Board may be listed as one of her most successful achievements. Red and Gray Board, Glee Club 4. Marjorie Edna Hughes Take the world as it is, not as it ought to be. Margie's dark brown eyes are always flashing and she seems to have no worries. Although she takes care of children now, Margie's greatest ambition is to be a secretary when she graduates. She enjoys jitterbugging a great deal, and can always be seen whenever a jam session is going on. Glee Club, Basketball, Hockey 2, 3, 4, Dramatic Club 2, 3, 4, Councillor 3. Page 25

BOULDER 1940 Leon Earl Grow Cheerfulness is the principal ingredient in the composition of health. Leon is a fellow who is always fooling with his teachers. Al- though he is always joking, he seems to find time to study and make the honor rolls. Leon is planning to enter some technical school to study either mechanical or chemical engineering. Although he is not an active athlete, he is greatly interested in sports. Relay Team 3. Leo Patrick Hachey Fortunate is he whom the dangers of others render cautious. This is Leo. He's the tall, dark type that is always welcome and always a good sport. Speaking of sports, he is known here- abouts as a baseball player of no mean ability. He was also a main- stay on the Relay Team. Maybe he gets in condition from his jaunt, via Cleghorn, to school every morning. Raymond Fredrick Hakkila The countenance is the index of the mind. Ray, that tall, blond fellow from Westminster, is considered bashful. This isn't so, judging from his progress in Gardner; how- ever, at the present time he's concentrating his charms on a brown- eyed girl who lives near him. He hopes to be an aviator later in ife which probably accounts for the fact that his mind is in the clouds most of the time. Dramatic Club 2. Jefferson Alonso Hall A thinking man is always striking out something new. Jeff is a member of the Dramatic Club and aids its activities by serving on the stage crew. He is the member-at-large of the Hi-Y , Club and president of the Rollstone Young Men's Class. His hobby Is molding and modeling. His many projects in these lines should prove helpful in attaining his goal as an architectual engineer. Class Motto Committee 3, Dramatic Club 4. Margaret May Haven There's mischief in this maid. Margaret is one of the pleasantest and most charming members of the senior class. She has plenty of pep and likes all sorts of sports, swimming, hiking, skating, and dancing, if that may be classified as a sport. She's very clever in knitting and sewing. Miggles, also, takes elocution lessons from Miss Quinlan. No wonder she has such a lovely voice! Dramatic 2, 3, 4, Class Colors 3, Write-up Committee 4, German Club 4. Barbara Myles Hayton A modest miss is she. Barbara came from Warren, Mass., but now lives in West- minster. Though she is rather new to Fitchburg we all like her a lot. Her quiet manner and good looks have won her many new friends. She has as a hobby, collecting match folders and coins. Latin Club 4. Mary Patricia Healy 'Tis good will makes intelligence. Mary likes to play basketball, as well as to referee. In fact, she plans to be a future gymnasium teacher. During the summer months she is a Red Cross instructor and a senior life-saver. Mary certainly has an interesting hobby, for she likes to distinguish a person's voice over the telephone. Call her sometime! Basketball 2, 3, 4, Tennis, Councillor 3, Dramatic Club 3, 4. Bernice Gladys Hilf Wisdom is better than rubies. Bernice is an efficient commercial student. Someday she will make a very capable accountant, for such is her desire. At present, she is working at State Teachers' College doing secretarial work. This has no harmful effect on her studies, for she still is a special honor student. Bernice finds postcard collecting an interesting diversion. Dramatic Club 2, Volleyball 2, 3, 4, French Club 3, Basketball 4. Page 24

BOULDER 1940 Robert Alexander Hay A jaithjul jriend is the true image of the deity. Watch for a beachwagon full of boys and at night full of girls if you want to find Robert. His delight in moonlit nights — any ht is okay, however — probably accounts for the fact that his Hbfne work is usually incomplete when he arrives at school, so in panish class he has to do his math and so on. Raefield Millard Hicks Virtue is the path of praise. Industrious is the word for Raefield. When he was a small boy he collected newspapers, later he worked on a truck farm, and now he is helping his father construct buildings. This early training will aid him greatly when he becomes a man of the world for he should know how to work hard and efficiently. Band 2, 3, 4. Robert Usher Holden The more a man knows, the less he talks. Bobs name has been one of the most frequent on the special honor roll. He was co-editor of the Red and Gray and took an active part in the French and Latin clubs, serving as Consul in the latter. He has a diversity of hobbies, including in his repertoire flower gardening, airplane modeling, collecting stamps and antiques. His fluency and ability to comprehend subjects should help him become a successful lawyer. French Club 2, 3, 4, Junior-Senior Reception 3, Red and Gray Board, Latin Club 3, 4, School Council, Round Table, Write-up Committee, Co-editor Red and Gray 4. Zygmcnt Holtz Character makes one great in all conditions. Ziggie as we all know him, has one pet aversion — Spanish. Although he conjugates verbs with unerring accuracy, when it comes to vocabulary and translation he seems to take a nosedive. During his spare time he may be seen industriously grubbing away in the good earth at Pierce's Greenhouse. His hobby is making model air- planes. After graduation he plans to be a truck-driver. Gym team 3. Barbara Lorraine Jackson She relishes a joke, and delights in a pun. Barb is a very popular member of our class. Although she hails from the country. West Fitchburg, she is very active in school sports. She has helped her team many times to win a basketball game. Bar- ba.a's favorite subject is stenography. We do not know whether the teacher has anything to do with this or not. Councillor 2, Hockey, Basketball, Volleyball, Deck Tennis 2, 3, 4, Archery 3, 4, Dramatic Club 4, Thanksgiving Dance Committee 4. Eila Ingrid Janhunen Let your conscience be your guide. At some time within the past year didn't you hear some boy saying, She's all right ? If you did, chances were that he was speaking about Eila, a popular member of our class. Eila formerly went to Gardner High but changed to Fitchburg in her junior year. Dramatic Club, Councillor, Marshal 4. Doris Ruth Jena Be sure you are right, then go ahead. Because of her good nature and carefree manner. Doris is popu- lar with everyone. Her leisure hours are spent in soap sculpturing. Her interest in sports has not been too great, but nevertheless, hearty and enthusiastic. She expects to be a hairdresser. Basketball, Volley- ball 2, 3, 4, Hockey 2, 4. Edith Gertrude Jenkins Often seen, but seldom heard. Edith is a quiet girl who blushes every time someone speaks to her. She likes all sports, especially basketball. She is a member of the Girl Scouts and the Rainbow. Edith's desire after graduation is to become a sewing teacher. Her hobby is sewing and she is known to be quite skillful with the needle.
