After high school he plans to enter Worcester Tech or some other technical college, in order to study electrical engineering. Football, Debating Club, Round Table 4. Herbert Allen Autio An honest man' s word is as good as his bond. S Herby is one of our few redheaded boys. During his mostly in hunt- C summer vacations at Wyman's Pond, Herby indulges mostly ing and fishing. Councillor 3. research chemist some day. 1 Agnes Sophie Adams May she continue and proceed In honor's fair career. Agnes uses most of her spare time on two of her hobbies, which are a collection of pictures of motion picture actors and actresses and a collection of poems. Both are large and interesting and all the pictures and poems are very well arranged. Doing things so neatly and carefully will help her very much if she becomes a bookkeeper. Dorothy Edna Aho Youth comes but once in a lifetime. Edna is one of our many blue-eyed blonds. We miss her greatly at school affairs which she too infrequently attends. Deck tennis seems to be the only sport in which she is interested. Lowe Play- ground also seems to be a place of interest for Edna. Bessie Angelos Knowledge is more than equivalent to force. Bessie is one of the few fortunate girls of our class who have lovely brown eyes. She always seems to be in a hurry to get some- where. We expect Bessie to have a smart little bakery shop of her own very soon because she has already started her training by work- ing in a bakery store after school. Although she has not participated in many school activities, Bessie will be remembered by everyone because of her ready smile. Virginia Agnes Andrew A comrade blythe and full of cheer. Ginnie is one of our more active seniors. Besides being a mem- ber of our Pep Club she is also interested in sports, especially basketball in which she ranks tops. Ginnie has a liking for classical music and melodious voices. We wonder why. She has a Scotch sense of humor which, it is rumored, runs through the family. Her ambi- tion for the future is to attend Bradford Junior College and Smith where she intends to major in history and math. Glee Club 2, Bas- ketball, Dramatic Club 2, 3, 4, Junior Prom 3, Pep Club, French Club 4. Page 9 BOULDER 1940 Roland Joseph Babineau Action is the proper food of life. Roland is short, quiet, and good-natured. He's a friendly chap and a good pal. Although he has not participated in sports to any great extent, he is a loyal rooter of our teams. Roland is a commer- cial course student. Dramatic Club 2, 3. John Christ Baimas An ounce of mirth is n orth a pound of sorrow. John, one of our most studious boys, is greatly interested in following current events in the newspapers and magazines. John represented Fitchburg High School at the Cushing Academy Debating Clinic and is the president of the Boys' Debating Club. He is also the Business Manager of the Red and Gray. Outside of school hours he can usually be found building model airplanes. He has always done well in his studies; we trust he will succeed in the field of aviation. Pasquale Vincent Barone A merry heart doeth good like a medicine. Pat is one of the quieter members of our class. He is an earn- est student and has also completed four years of Latin. His ambition is to be a doctor. He has a friendly disposition which should be appreciated by his patients. Latin Club, Dramatic Club 3, 4. Theresa Cecile Aubin Laugh, and the world laughs with you. rhe-esa is one of the light-haired girls in the commercial group. She is fairly tall, has shining bright eyes, and is in great demand because of her delightful laugh and cheerful manner. Although she has shown an interest in secretarial work, her plans for the future are undecided. She may be seen at the movies regularly and her hobby is collecting photographs of screen stars. She is also a Girl Scout in Troop 13. Lauretta Mae Balzer Sport is the bloom and glow of perfect health. Here is a girl we seldom see unhappy. She is a staunch friend, and full of fun. Her merry eyes show, as does the whistle in her throat, a love of mischief and gaiety. She, however, has serious thoughts for the future, and aspires to be a great swimmer. Her crawl stroke is beautiful to see. She is one of our star basketball players. Basketball 2, 3, 4. Helen Elizabeth Barholm Enjoy the present smiling hour And put it out of fortune's power. When you see a curly blond head bobbing along the corridor, you may be certain it is Helen. Helen's cheerfulness will surely chase those glooms away. She can laugh at a joke, be it - on herself or someone else. Her time is pretty well occupied, either in reading, drawing, or working at the B. F. Brown School. Ida Helen Barrett A willing heart makes a willing hand. Ida is one Westminsterite who should get a medal for braving last winter's storms in order to come to school. She lives a long distance from the busline and many times had to wait for the bus by the side of the road. However, endurance is very essential when one is going to be a nurse. Page 10 BOULDEfi. Robert Nelson Beauregard The man worth while is the one that will smile whe goes wrong. Bub, as he is more popularly known to all his classmates, is a fellow of many qualities, all good. He is usually quite retiring but can hold his own in any animated argument or conversation. His cheery nod and smile are known to all, even the lowly sophomore, and his trumpet playing ability is recognized throughout the school. His ambition is to go to business college and become an accountant. Band 2. 3, 4, Baseball 3, Football, Dramatic Club, Orchestra 3, 4, Pep Club 4. Dino Mario Belli A tender smile, our sorrows' only balm. Dino is one of our efficient marshals who is employed outside of school as a garden worker on Stockwell's farm. He also raises his own rabbits. He intends to leave all this, however, for the Coast Guard or the Navy. Ralph Eugene Bennett The mildest manners with the bravest mind. Ralph's blue eyes and sparkling smile convince us that he is J ! an Irish lad. Ralph doesn't take his school work very seriously, r As he tends to keep things to himself we have not been informed  y about his plans for the future. Reading tnaketh a full man. Dave numbers among his extra-curricular activities the presidency of the Y.P.H.A. of which he has been an active member for some time. He has been listed also, for the past two years, on the rolls of the Debating Club. He devotes his leisure time to the writing of poetry, but as a life's work he is more interested in business admin- istration. French Club 2, 3, 4, Junior-Senior Relay 3, Debating Club 3, 4. At present he helps Rudy with his dancing s;udio. Willie is a great runner and his plans for the future run along this line. Willie tells us that girls do not seriously interest h'm for he is bent on remaining a bachelor. Track Team 2, 3, Junior Prom 3, Relay Team 3, 4, Dramatic Club, Pep Club 4. Kirwan Albert Bilson A smile is worth a million dollars but it doesn't cost a cent. Kirwin goes by the nam; of Ace in Westminster, a name which was given him because of his skill in all sports, especially softball. He received, also, another nickname. Speed, a result of his work in his father's store. If he gets into the Navy, which is his ambition, he may acquire another nickname. Track 3. Robert Elmer Blanchard Character is higher than intellect. Robert is the strong silent type, and can usually be found talk- ing in the corridor. Although not an overzealous student, Bob is an excellent dancer, and this seems to him to be more important than school work. Bob's memory is not of the best, and it is perhaps because of this that he intends to become a plumber, so as to con- tinue the plumber's custom of forgetting tools. Hector Ernest Bolduc An ounce of cheerfulness is worth a pound of sadness. Hector has one guiding passion in his life — his Ford. As soon as school is over he may be seen dashing for his beloved jalopy, and as far as we have been able to find out, he seems to spend most of his time tinkering with it. At one time during his school career he sang first bass in the Glee Club and did an excellent job of it. At present he works for the Bolduc Ice Corporation, and someday hopes to take change of the business. Yvanna Marv Belletete Be good, sweet maid, and let who will, be clever. Yvanna is a quiet member of the class. She gave equal amounts of time to her studies and social activities. Her great ambition is to become a nurse. Gertrude Lucille Belliveau Politeness costs nothing, and gains everything. Gert with her dark hair and eyes is an interesting person to know. She is a swell pal, a grand sport, and one of the best dancers in our class. Her ability at artistic decoration was proved by her work on the Junior Prom Committee. Although we feel that her art could carry her far, Gert's plans for the future are comparatively domestic. Hockey, Dramatic Club 2, Volleyball 2, 3, Junior Prom 3. Doris Mae Berry Enjoy life while you may. Doris is very, very quiet for so big a girl. She is a willing worker, and will stick to a thing until it's finished. Doris has a sense of humor, which, perhaps, helps her in taking care of children after school. Her goal is office work. Basketball 2. Yvonne Bernadette Blanchette And every hour, a thought in readiness. Yvonne is that jolly, medium-size, brown-haired girl you see passing quietly in the corridors. Although she belongs to the com- mercial group she does not believe in studying too much, although she has fairly good marks to her credit. She belongs to the 4H Club, which was organized by a group of girls in South Fitchburg. Her hobbies are collecting stamps and photographs of her friends. After graduation, she would like to work in an office. Page 12 BOULDER. 1940 Alfred William Boucher He most prevails who nobly dares. Alfred has a quiet but likable personality. He spends a great deal of his time reading and is well versed in many subjects. During the years that he has spent in Fitchburg High we all have come to like him, and feel sure that he will be a success in the paper busi- ness which he has chosen for his life's work. Gerard Jean Boudreau Chance everywhere has power. Here's a fellow who knows of things to do and how to do them. In school he's the tall, rather quiet young man with the curly hair that all girls seem to like. And if you want to know anything about U. S. History, Gerard is the fellow to ask. John Vearen Bowers Gaiety is the soul's health. The Great Dubber must have found the fountain of youth because he always appears as fresh as a spring day even though he maintains a job at the Y, goes to at least one dance a week, has had dates with thirty-six different girls, belongs to the Hi-Y, worries about his future, and leads our cheers. What a man! Football, Debasing Club 2, Basketball, Dramatic Club 2, 3, 4, Junior-Senior Reception 3, Cheerleader 3, 4, Pep Club, Open Meeting, Senior Class Play 4. George claims he is going to be a big game hunter. He is a happy kind of fellow and is always ready with a quick comeback. Collecting medals was once his hobby but he decided that button pins would be much easier to obtain. He also collects keys and padlocks which he rattles on Hallowe'en night. Arthur William Brusila An honest heart possesses a kingdom. Art helps, as a stage hand, to put on our dramatic productions. He is very much interested in photography. Arthur is in the trombone section of the band. Art tells good fish stories because he has had lots of practice for his hobby is fishing. Club 4. Band 2, 3, 4, Dramatic Doris Louise Bowen She studies music, we have learned. Doris is talented in many arts. Her interest must lie in the finer things of life, for not only has she shown her ability in art, but in music as well. Her hobby is handicrafts and drawing, and she was a member of the Art Club in her sophomore year. She is a fine pianist and has often delighted the Dramatic Club with her playing. She plans to continue her studies in music after graduation. Art Club 2, Orchestra 3, Dramatic Club 4. Reathel Marguerite Briggs For a light heart Hies long. Tall, dark, and glamorous, Ray has captured the heart of many a lad. But only one remained and sadly enough he is now at college. Ray passes the dull moments away by learning the latest songs and keeping sport write-ups. She is a lovely dancing partner. She is interested in advertising. Basketball 2. 4. Hockey 3, 4. Loretta Dorothy Brooks Merrily, merrily shall I live. Loretta has the desirable combination of a fair complexion, brown wavy hair, and a sunny disposition. Volleyball, Basketball 2, 3, 4, Hockey 2, 4, Dramatic Club 3, 4. Page 14 Walter Elmer Buck Learning, like the lunar beam, affords light. Some of Bucky's virtues are his wavy blond hair, his blue eyes, his height, and his manner. He is a great sportsman, particularly in hunting. He also is very energetic as he gets up early to peddle milk. Bucky is also active in the DeMolay. Football 2. James Vincent Patrick Carnivale Habits form character and character is destiny. James is a cheerful little classmate, who exhibited exceptional skill in basketball. This athletic skill is not limited to basketball only but extends to other sports as well. The principles he has learned from his hobby of airplane modeling should prove an asset in his endeavor to become a pilot in the United States Air Force. Basket- ball 4. BOULDER Frederick George Carpenter The wisest man is he who thinks himself the least so. Freddie was a happy-go-lucky member of our class but he always had time to study. Freddie is full of joy and sarcasm which is all in fun. He is also generous and good natured with a smile for everyone. Football, Basketball 2, 3, 4, Track, Dramatic Club 3, 4, Pep Club, Councillor 4. Richard Edward Chambers A man should endeavor to be pleasant as a reed, yet as hard as a cedar-wood. After graduation, Theresa plans to train herself for hairdressing. Marjorie Ann Casassa High flights she had and wit as well And so her tongue was never still. Midge is a person one would call calm, cool, and collected, for no matter what the trouble, Midge always keeps her wits about her. Her sunny disposition may be due to her study of poetry. During the afternoon Robert works for a beverage company, making soda. For his future work he intends to study accounting. Ernest Michael DiGeronimo A well-bred man is always sociable and complaisant. Ernie is that rare type of person who can, at the same time, be a good athlete and a high honor student. His recitations warm the cockles of his teachers' hearts, especially in math in which he shines. Durward Wells Eastman Jesters do often prove prophets. A mighty hunter he! Durward, according to all reports, is a regular Nimrod, who during the hunting season can be seen al- most any day roaming the forests in pursuit of his favorite sport. A good me- chanic, he can construct anything from model airplane to boats. His latest endeavor is an automobile. He also helps to support our local dance halls not only as a dancer but as a hot trumpet in an orchestra Eccie also is a Golden Eagle Scout. Band, Orchestra 2, 3, 4. Robert William Elkas Levity of behavior is the bane of all that is good and virtuous. A busy boy, Bob has taken the college course with the inten- tion of entering a College of Pharmacy. If he works as hard at phar- macy as he does at his studies and ou'side activities, there is no reason why he should not be successful. Bob is a he-man too. He helped beat the class of '39 in the relay. Red and Gray Board, Orchestra 2, 3, 4, Junior-Senior Relay, Latin Club 3, French Club, Round Table 4. Iggie is the sort of person who plays when he plays, works when he works, and thinks all the time. Baseball 3. Philip Albanie Flanagan fth v Humor is often mingled with sensibility. He seems to want to follow in his Dad's footsteps, because his one ambition is to be a contractor. Coun- cillor 2, Class Colors 3. Edward Gerard Flood An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest. Edward's posture is unequaled in F.H.S. When he isn't doing his regular home work he studies chemistry which he hopes to take up as his life work. Councillor 3. Alfred Paul Forest is better to be always prepared than to suffer once. Track, Relay 3, 4. 1940 David Crawford Glen Skill and confidence are an unconquered army. Glenny is one of our cheeriest seniors. One does not often see a girl as typical of her nationality as Henna is, with her blond hair and clear complexion. All her char- acteristics are proof of her Finnish descent. Her marks indicate that free-hand drawing is her most outstanding subject, and it is no wonder for drawing is her hobby. After graduation Henna plans to take up secretarial work. He's the tall, dark type that is always welcome and always a good sport. Speaking of sports, he is known here- abouts as a baseball player of no mean ability. He was also a main- stay on the Relay Team. Maybe he gets in condition from his jaunt, via Cleghorn, to school every morning. Raymond Fredrick Hakkila The countenance is the index of the mind. Ray, that tall, blond fellow from Westminster, is considered bashful. This isn't so, judging from his progress in Gardner; how- ever, at the present time he's concentrating his charms on a brown- eyed girl who lives near him. He hopes to be an aviator later in ife which probably accounts for the fact that his mind is in the clouds most of the time. Dramatic Club 2. Bernice finds postcard collecting an interesting diversion. Dramatic Club 2, Volleyball 2, 3, 4, French Club 3, Basketball 4. Page 24 BOULDER 1940 Herbert Edward Halliday Nothing is more valuable to a man than courtesy. Teddy is one of our more prominent senior boys. Beside being vice-president of both the Pep and Glee Clubs he busies himself with athletics. Perhaps he cultivated his preference for dim lights and smooth dancing in New York, where lives a fairer damsel than all. As for the future, Ted's headed for the University of Washington where he will study forestry. Football 3, 4, Pep Club, vice-president, Dramatic Club, Glee Club, Pep Dance Committee, Write-up Committee, Class Prophecy, Senior Class Play 4. Football 2, 3, 4, Relay 3, Round Table 4. Donald Bernard Hawthorne He is merry as a cricket. Don is one of our noisiest seniors who believe in being heard as well as seen. We wouldn't call studying his favorite pastime. He is one good athlete whom we couldn't do without on the football field or indeed in baseball. Red and Gray Board, Glee Club 4. Marjorie Edna Hughes Take the world as it is, not as it ought to be. Margie's dark brown eyes are always flashing and she seems to have no worries. Although she takes care of children now, Margie's greatest ambition is to be a secretary when she graduates. Page 25 BOULDER 1940 Robert Alexander Hay A jaithjul jriend is the true image of the deity. Watch for a beachwagon full of boys and at night full of girls if_you want to find Robert. His delight in moonlit nights — any ht is okay, however — probably accounts for the fact that his Hbfne work is usually incomplete when he arrives at school, so in panish class he has to do his math and so on. Raefield Millard Hicks Virtue is the path of praise. Industrious is the word for Raefield. When he was a small boy he collected newspapers, later he worked on a truck farm, and now he is helping his father construct buildings. This early training will aid him greatly when he becomes a man of the world for he should know how to work hard and efficiently. Band 2, 3, 4. Zygmcnt Holtz Character makes one great in all conditions. Ziggie as we all know him, has one pet aversion — Spanish. Gym team 3. Barbara Lorraine Jackson She relishes a joke, and delights in a pun. Barb is a very popular member of our class. Although she hails from the country. Last year, Andy had a hard time defending the noted town of Westminster against the disparaging remarks of Mr. Dillon, but came through as succ;ssfully as his famous townsman, General Miles. In addition to this accomplishment, Andy ran a very good race in the Junior-Senior Relay and gave a fine exhibition of tennis in the fall tournament. Debating Club 2, 3, 4, Dramatic Club 2, 4, Motto Committee 3, Latin Club 3, 4. Arthur Arne Hyvonen Opportunities are more powerful than conquerors. Arthur may be considered a rabid candid camera fan, for photo- graphy is his hobby. During his high school days, he has mixed well by joining various clubs. Underneath his quiet appearance he has a fun-loving disposition, that is enjoyed by everyone. His ambi- tion is to join the Navy. Dramatic Club 2, 3, 4, Glee Club 4. Donald Bruce Jeffery A good countenance is a letter of recommendation. Aviation has at least one ardent disciple in Fitchburg — Donald. Norman Belding Lyons An honest man is the noblest work of God. How a hobby may develop into a life's work is shown in the case of Norman. Norman's interests are not confined, however, to purely technical subjects, for he is an active member of the Scouts. Radio Club 2, 3, 4. Charles Henry McCarthy He that labors and thrives spins gold. Intramural Baseball 2, 3, Intramural Basketball 2, 3, 4. Charles Henry Manning Dancing's a touchstone that true Beauty tries. Where there is music Skids can surely be found, demonstrating the newest jitterbug step. We sometimes wonder whether he eats at all during recess, but probably he has already acquired the tech- nique of doing two things at one time. Skids has also been interested in the Debating and Glee Clubs, besides being active in the St. Joseph Cadets. This machine age must have captivated his fancy, as Skids plans to be a machinist. Debating Club 2, 3. Glee Club 3, 4. Ernest Mathieu Preparation is half the battle and nothing is lost by being on one ' s guard. One of the quieter members of the senior class, Ernest hai from Cleghorn, and speaks French like a Parisian. To realize how ambitious he is you have only to know that he intends to study medicine and become a doctor. Ellen Charlotte Marden you would be well served. You must serve yourself. Here is a young lady of unquestionable merit and ability. Charlotte did not neglect any athletic activities and has proved her ability on the basketball floor. Although her work shows that she has pursued her studies faithfully, we have yet to s.e her when she was not ready for fun. Hockey 2, Basketball 2, 3, 4, Volleyball, Reader's Guild 3. Audrey Dorothy Helen Marriott Fine words never hurt the tongue. Audrey is, as the saying goes, as busy as a bee. Not only has she been efficient at the lunch counter in school, but the Girl Scouts have also claimed much of her time. There is an old saying that people who do things don't have to talk about it, and Evelyn must have taken this as her motto, for she is a petite miss of few words. She collects postcards. Evelyn wants to be a typist and she can surely tap the keys in a superior manner. Page 33 BOULDER 1940 Clarence Edward May Manners — the final and perfect flower of noble character. El Shifto May loves to argue. His hobby is collecting baseball bats. Could it be that when his argumentation is not convincing, he uses his above mentioned hobby as a persuasive method? That he has a good amount of determination is proved by his four years of football. He also did well in baskeball and baseball. Football, Basketball 2, 3, 4, Baseball 3, 4, Pep Club 4. Walter Alfred Maynard Mind is the great lover of all things. Although he won't admit it, Walt is one of the South Side's most famous sons. He acts as one of the cogs in the machine that iurns out the Fitchburg Sentinel. He looks reserved but, as his many belittling companions will assert, he is decidedly the opposite. Prob- ably the thing that distingushes him from most fellows and girls is that he doesn't pretend to be anything that he isn't. Edmund Domenic Mele The secret of success is consistency of purpose. Ed hails from the wilds of Sou'h Ashburnham. He is an ardent fight fan, and has taken lessons in boxing. Basketball is his favorite sport from both a spectator's and a player's viewpoint. In his less active leisure moments, he devotes himself to stamp-collecting. He is quite definite as to plans for the future, having hopes that he may soon be the owner of a service station. He'd rather do his work, get out of school, and spend most of his remaining time in fishing, hunting, and bowling. He is best in playing basketball. Basketball 2, 3. Elsie Elaine Mattson Kindness is the sunshine in which virtue grows. Elsie has worked faithfully during her four years of high school. There is never a dull moment when Pauline is around as she always manages to find something entertaining to do or say. Her real hobbies are ice skating and taking pictures but just to keep out of mischief she swims, roller skates, hikes and dances. If writing notes is a hobby we'll add that too as she certainly spends plenty of time on that. Pauline is active in the French Club. Her ambition is to be a nurse. Hockey 2, French Club, Dramatic Club 2, 3, 4. Priscilla Merriam Wisdom is the conqueror of fortune. Priscilla is co-chairman of the school notes division of the Red a.id Gray, a position in which she has shown exceptional ability in reporting school affairs. She follows up her collecting with careful study, and has become an authority on this fascinating subject. Glee Club 2, French Club 2, 3, 4, Round Table, Secretary of French Club, Red and Gray 4. Hilkka Irene Miinala No simplest duty is forgot. Hilkka has a smiling countenance and friendly nature — with just that charming spice of temper that makes her a delightful puzzle. Fiddling in the orchestra, playing basketball, and teaching Sunday School are only a few of the many activities in which she participates. She has a special interest in languages and in marks she ranks among the highest. Although Hilkka is attracted by the opposite sex, her affections are not centered on anyone. Basketball, Dramatic Club, Orchestra 2, 3, 4. Latin Club 3, 4, German Club, Round Table, Prize Speaking 4. Page 34 BOULDER Joseph Albert Menard Presence of mind and courage in distress are more than armies to procure success. Joe, our popular football captain, is really a scientist at heart. He really does read Einstein so perhaps it is his knowledge of science that helped him as our crashing left tackle. Versatile Joe is as much at home on a dance floor as on the gridiron. He is going to Northwestern to take a mechanical engineering course. Ring Com- mittee 3, Football, Track 3, 4. Arthur Walter Miles The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet. Although he did not join us until our junior year, Arthur soon became a well-liked member of the class. He has that gift of fluent conversation which so many of us desire but cannot acquire. He enjoys outdoor sports, especially hunting and fishing. We do not know his intentions for the future. Leonard Phelps Morey A civil habit oft covers a good man. Len is the tall smooth-looking chap you see prancing along the corridors usually accompanied by some fair maiden. His hobby is collecting the latest records and gathering his closest friends for an evening of entertainment. Len tells us that he would like to be a salesman. No doubt he. will have no trouble selling, especially to the ladies. Dramatic Club 2, 3, 4. Senior Class Prophecy 4. Raymond William Muhonen His hair is of a golden color. Our basketball star has a head of almost platinum blond hair that any girl would give a fortune to have. Except when on the bas- ketball floor, Ray seldom emerges from the placid mood that even the job of collecting junior class dues could not make him forget. This calm, collected attitude gives Ray an air of dignity which many athletes discard. Basketball 2, 3, 4, Dramatic Club, Junior Class Dues 3, Pep Club 4. Shirley Edith Miller With pearly teeth and raven hair. Shirley's glossy black hair is the envy of many of our girls. W e all wonder how she keeps it so nice. Shirley is often seen in the company of a tall, dark, and handsome fellow. Like many of the other girls she would like to get secretarial work after her school days are over. Basketball 2, Dramatic Club 2, 3, 4. Santina Anne Mitola Be wisely worldly, but not worldly wise. Santina is one of the smartest dressers in our class. We can readily understand that because her one ambition is to be a designer of clothes. Probably in 1950 we women will wish we could afford to go to Santina to have pur clothes designed. Singing is Santina's hobby and she works in one of the most popular stores in town, Kresge's. Volleyball 2, Dramatic Club 2, 3- Marjorie Helen Murch A joke a day keeps the blues away. Marjorie's dark eyes are always flashing and smiling. Nothing ever disturbs her, and the girl you see walking down the corridor very slowly is, undoubtedly, Marge. She is also one of West Fitch- burg's boosters. Marge hopes to be the foremost hair stylist of 1942. Nancy Lowe Murphy Her eyes are flooded with laughter. Bella is the nick-name for Nancy, one of our best class wits. She is a wonderful mathematician. Four and four is always nine to Bella. You can always hear her melodious voice in the corridors singing one of the popular numbers of the day. Hockey 2, Vice- President of Art Club, Open Meeting Play 2, 3, Councillor 3, Dramatic Club 2, 3, 4, Class Play 4. Page 35 BOULDE-R i 1940 Tenho Nappari An ounce of prudence is worth a pound of gold. Tenho is a shining example of a student who knows how to study intelligently. His winning the biology prize in both his sopho- more and junior years proves this. Maybe he gained his extensive scientific knowledge from his summer occupation of caring for an apple orchard. Councillor 2, Dramatic Club 4. Walter Valfrid Niemi No legacy is so rich as honesty. Geester keeps the second floor corridor in a seething ferment with his merry humor. Walt throws himself wholeheartedly into every undertaking, and his usual state of perpetual motion, especially when driving, is amazing to behold. Walter has decided to become a modern torturer, i.e., he intends to study dentistry and to establish an office in this city. Junior-Senior Relay 3. Robert Anthony O'Donnell A faithful friend is the medicine of life. Bob is one of the best-liked boys in our class. His winning personality has won many friends for him. He is also one of the best dancers in the class. Wherever a large group of boys can be found, you are always apt to find Bob right in the middle of them. James Otis Men are polished through art and speech. Jimmie is the quiet young fellow, with the freckled face, who does most of the photographic work for the school magazine. No matter what the situation may be, his face always remains a perfect blank, and many a teacher has been definitely surprised when James came through with the right answer to a particularly hard question. With these qualities plus his pleasing personality his future business life should be very successful. Class Color Committee 3, Red and Gray photographer 3, 4. Beatrice Isobel Neal Charms strike the sight, but merit wins the soul. Eea is just another one of those people who can combine intel- lect with a wonderful personality. She is probably one of the best dancers in our class and she dresses like a fashion plate from Mademoijelle. Bea has a lot of determination and always carries through whatever she has her mind set upon. Dramatic Club 2, 3, 4, Ring Committee 3, Pep Club, Round Table, Write-up Committee 4. Artemis Nikitas Never idle a moment, but thrifty and thoughtful of others. Artie is one of the rather sophisticated members of our class. Her popularity and distinction are based upon her unassuming yet friendly manner. Sincere words and friendly actions are a few of Artie's innumerable assets. Speaking of clothes, the variety and quality of Artie's are unequaled by those of her classmates. She is inter: sted in sports and skillfully participates in them. A great future as a fine secretary should lie in store for her. Basketball 2, 3, 4. Helen Nikitas Thoughtful of the future. Nickie, as she is sometimes called, has used her abiltiy as a commercial student by serving as a part-timer for the high school office. She is a junior member of the Woman's Club and is active in sports. Always ready to lend a helping hand to everyone, she is a true friend. Nickie has high hopes of being a private secretary in an office. Volleyball 2, 3, Basketball, Dramatic Club 2, 3,' 4, Class Play 4. Chrystal Lois Noonan we lire truly, we shall see truly. What is so rare as a personality like Chrystal's? She continually has a friendly greeting for everyone and her presence tends to add a cheerful informality to any group. She has not had much time for participation in school activities, but she has been a loyal supporter of the Red and Gray throughout her high school years. Chrystal's ambition is to join the legion of women in white as she plans to be a nurse. Reader's Guild 3. Page 36 BOULDER 1940 Robert Allan Otto To be trusted is a greater compliment than to be loved. Bob is kept busy by his job at the Fennia Market as well as by bowling, Hi-Y, and tennis. Although he is serious about studies, he doesn't let them get the best of him and is always ready with a smile if it's needed. Girls don't trouble him as he is impartial. Intramural Basketball 2, 3, Relay Team 3, Tennis 2, 3, 4, Pep Club 4. James Mantheos Panagiotes He is a true friend. James is a dark young fellow with the big smile who is always willing to praise the Greek race. When not playing football, his time is spent in singing in the Glee Club, or pursuing his hobby of collecting old coins. James has chosen his future occupation well, for he intends to become chef of his own restaurant, and as good food is always in demand, his career should be a great success. Glee Club, Intramural Basketball 2, 3, Football 2, 3, 4. Charles Vassilios Pappas thou dost play with him at any game, thou art sure to lose. Yet with all these activities he has found time to do his studying. We will all remember Chick as a happy-go-lucky lad. Basketball 2, 3, 4, Track 3, Football 3, 4. John Louis Pappas Steady of heart and stout of hand. Johnnie is a very good natured fellow, and has a friendly way with everybody. He is not known very much around school, but the people that know him appreciate his acquaintance. Connie is a person who, because of her size, has to make a double effort to make herself setn and heard. Connie's hobby is collecting photographs. She does not take to sports, but is one of our well trained artists. After graduation, she plan s to attend a school of art. Margaret Jane Waite Sober, steadfast, and demure. Margaret is a quiet girl who is just a tiny bit shy. She is very nice to know, however. She must like dogs, for she collects figures of them as a hobby. Can you picture her as an efficient librarian for that's what she plans to do when her high school days are over? Reader's Guild, Junior-Senior Reception 3, Dramatic Club 3, 4, Glee Club, Marshal 4. Freda Lorraine Watkins No one had ever asked her aid in vain. 4 Freda is one of those people who are not happy unless they 'oing something. She has taken part in several school activities, is interested in basketball and has provided much amusement her team. She has also proved her ability in debating, as she was one of the speakers in the public debate last year. This achieve- ment should be of great value to Freda as she is planning to become a teacher. Basketball 2, 3, Debating, Glee Club 3, 4, French Club 4. Eunice Shepard Wellington She is pretty to walk with, And witty to talk with. And pleasant, too, to think on. Laughing eyes and a happy nature constitute the greater part Eunice's character. Her friendly chatter plays an important role group conversations, and her radiant smile is an inspiration to her friends and acquaintances. Her nature has a serious side too. and she has made various plans for the future. Many girls of our class are planning to follow in the footsteps of Florence Nightingale, and Eunice expects to be one of them. .ill Page 47 BOULDER 1940 Richard David Upham His heart is true as steel. Dick isn't absolutely certain as to his future occupation, but he rather favors the banking business, training in which he is re- ceiving through his work in our own High School Bank. Outside of school hours, his interests are centered around his hobby — photo- graphy, and his activities as a member of the DeMolay, the Christian Youth Club, and the Scouts. John Anthony Valera The good man makes others good. John is an industrious lad who helps Miss Mclntyre in the cafeteria. His ambition is to be a singer with some orchestra and to make some song famous. His dark bright eyes and happy nature ought to go a long way in helping him attain his goal. Junior Prom Committee 3, Class Play 4. William Frederick Valiton He is an absolute gentleman. Bill is reputed to be an expert gardener, but apparently this is but a side interest, for he plans to make architecture or general in- dustrial designing his permanent vocation. Among his extra-curricular activities is his membership in the Sons of Veterans of Foreign VC'ars. Incidentally, Bill occupies the leisure hours with the science of numismatics — old coin collecting to you. Latin Club 3. Jacob Van Hillo A wise man will make more opportunities than he finds. Jake is a nice person to have around. He has a good sense of humor and keeps it busy. He has a daily morning paper route which takes him over the South Side. His hobby is collecting coins. Jake's ambition is to be a draftsman. Relay substitute 3. Madelene Langdell Wheeler was on!) a glad Good morning, As she passed along the way, But it spread the morning's glory Over the livelong day. Madelene has taken as her own the philosophy that laughter lightens burdens and her cheery greetings are heard as regularly as the ringing of the school bell. Much of her time is spent in collect- ing old bottles, this being her hobby. She is also an interested and an active member of the Chr istian Youth Club. Madelene plans for the future to obtain work at the Morgan Memorial Nursery Camp in Boston. Basketball, Hockey 2, 3. Priscilla Esther Whitney A perfect pattern of prudence. Priscilla is a very industrious young lady which will help her in her ambition, nursing. We wonder how she finds so much time for reading books. If any of you boys and girls would like to know what to read for a book report, just go to Priscilla who has read practically every book in the library'- Reader's Guild 3. Marion Elizabeth Willard Actions speak louder than words. Marion is one of the happy-go-lucky members of our class. She'll admit studying is not her chief interest and usual pastime, although she does well in all her subjects. She likes both indoor and outdoor sports, especially basketball and swimming. Her hobby is collecting pictures of her friends. For her life's work, Marion has chosen dress designing. Glee Club, Dramatic Club, Marshal 4. Gloria Helen Wilson Forward and frolic glee was there The will to do. the soul to dare. Snowball hails from way up on Rindge Road. She is a celebrated member of Miss Peabody's German family. She and Miss Haskins too have grown to be quite good friends as Snowball often stays around school until three, which even the best of us do occasionally. Gloria's by-word is Have you got any extra money? Her ambition is to be a nurse. Dramatic Club 2, 3, 4, German Club 4. Page 48 BOULDER 1940 Walter Durward Vieweg Courage conquers all things. Walter comes from the back woods of Westminster. He lives on Bean Porridge Hill, which in winter is isolated sometimes for weeks at a time. However, his remoteness from civilization does not keep him from acquaintance with national and foreign affairs, fur almost every day he debates some subject with a teacher. Dramatic Club 2. Harry Vizigian No one reaches a high position without boldness. Harry attribues his great strength to the exercise he gets throw- ing bundles for the Fitchburg Sentinel. He is always jovial and easy to deal with. He admits that he takes his jokes from Ancient His- tory texts but his unique way of telling them makes them funny anyway. He intends to become a printer. Junior Relay 3. Warren Preston Wheeler He has a heart with room for every joy. Warren is a small, dark complexioned, rather good looking young man. He never seemed to have much to say but attended strictly to his own affairs. He had an outside interest in photography. Henry Vito Wicha Genius is mainly an affair of energy. Henry managed to hold down a position on our football team and, although he saw little action in actual games, his persistence kept his team mates striving harder. He has had experience in hand- ling cars and hopes to get employment as a truck driver. Foot- ball 2, 3, 4. Ardath Woollacott you want learning, you must work for it. Ardath appears to be serene and calm no matter what happens. Even tests in chemistry do not ruffle her. Her calmness will be of value to her when she becomes a nurse. She belongs to the Epworth League and is president of the Theta Girls. Possibly some day Ardath will be on a ranch for her hobby is the raising and care of horses. Hockey, Volleyball 2, Basketball 2, 3, Glee Club 2, 4, Dramatic Club 4. Mary Frances Worthley Reply with wit to gravity And with gravity to wit. Not much was heard from Mary until her senior year when most of us were, at some time, reproved by her for talking. Mary was a marshal and she managed to keep as much order among the students as was possible. If she maintains this efficiency in nursing, patients can't help but recover. Should you ever desire home-cooking, you might bear in mind that Mary's hobby is baking. Marshal 4. Victoria Yapchian That which befits her is cheerfulness and courage. Vicky is one of the tall members of our class, but as full of cheerfulness as she is high. She has a great sense of humor and plenty of mischief, but she does her work well. She hopes for a career in business. Basketball, Volleyball 3, Dramatic Club 4. Leo Oscar Wiita One inch of joy surmounts of grief a span, Because to laugh is proper to the man. Leo, a sarcastic but easygoing young gentleman, never seems to be in a hurry. One wonders how he catches the school bus early enough so that he will get to his job on time at the W. F. Whitney Company in South Ashburnham. He is fond of shooting and belongs to a Rod and Gun Club. He plans to enter some higher institution of learning but, as usual, is taking his time about choosing it. Page 49 BOULDER 1940 Donald Beamont W oods He is a gentleman because his nature, Is kind and affable to every creature. Don is president of the Dramatic Club and takes an active part in all its activities. He likes a hletics, and played in the intramural basketball league and the fall te-.nis tournament besides helping his team win the relay. Don is a persistent student and hopes to enter the Coast Guard Academy. Junior Relay. Junior Prom Com- mittee, Junior-Senior Reception 3. Dramatic Club 3, 4, Class Play, Co-business manager of Boulder 4. Robert Leslie Yates Friends have all things in common. Bob goes to school by day and to the movies by night, where he works as an ush er at the Fitchburg Theater. He also travels around Fitchburg in his well known car working for the Crowell Publishing Company. He is lots of fun and well liked by everyone. Glee Club. Band 2, 3. Ralph Ernest Young Success, remember, is the reward of toil. If you ever happen to roam the woods and streams of West- minster you may find Ralph somewhere along the trail, hunting or fishing with the skill of an expert. In addition to increasing his own knowledge of field and stream he finds time to impart some of it to Westminster youngsters by diligently attending to his duties as a Boy Scout leader. Dramatic Club 2, Band 3, 4. Richard Wallace Zeigler His attire is very neat. Dick is a pleasant fellow and well liked. This lad is the secret object of many lassies' affections. Dick however is true to one. Music is his chief ambition and he is already an accomplished violinist. His ability as a basketball player is well known. Part of his leisure time finds him at Boucher's Filling Station. Orchestra 2, 3, 4, Relay Team, Junior-Senior Reception, Junior Prom Com- mittee 3, Basketball 3, 4, Glee Club 4. Charles George Zink, Jr. He doth indeed show some sparks that are like art. Charlie is one of the few marshals who greet one in the hall with a wide grin and no words. He's a little fellow but he has a technique of hair-pulling that defends him against the largest of his classmates. Speaking of technique, he's a lion among the ladies. On a list of his numerous abilities are found cooking and mending socks. Considering his diminutive frame, Charlie is amazingly large on the inside. Orchestra 2. 3, 4. Assistant Track Manager. Junior-Senior Reception 3, Pep Club, Dramatic Club, Track Manager 4. James James Contaxes James is one of our dark haired Greek boys. He is likeable and has a willing smile. James's hobby is writing short essays for different magazines and papers. Outside of school he belongs to a Greek organization called the E.X.S. We regret we could not persuade him to sit for his picture. The labor of years is accomplished Page 50 BOULDE-R. 1940 Organizations 1940 BOLL 1940 THE ORCHESTRA Directors J.
