EMORY ADAMS HARTWELL 1% R. E. Adams Hartwell, one of the first instructors in the Fitchburg High School, has the satisfaction of knowing that he is loved, honored and respected by every student and graduate of the high school in which he has for so many years successfully performed his duties. Mr. Hartwell was born in West Fitchburg, April 24, 1850, and in June, 1871, he graduated from the Fitchburg High School, having the great honor of being valedictorian of his class. He immediately entered Amherst college, from which institution he graduated in June, 1874, with an excellent record. His experience as a teacher began in the Ashburnham high school during the spring term of 1875. In the fall of the same year he took up his duties as instructor in sciences in the F. H. S., where he remained until December, 1905, when a most unfortu- nate illness compelled him to take a leave of absence. The loss of so valuable a man from the teaching staff ' is keenly felt by all, and the class of 1906, the alumni, and the undergraduates mutually tender their best wishes for a most speedy recovery, and sincerely hope that they will soon have the pleasure of seeing Mr. Hartwell back in his old position.
