As a teacher, he has acted with deep concern for the progression of his students, giving of himself unselfishly to further their knowledge and understanding. Mr. Burrow's per- sonable character has inspired us to expand our intellectual hori- zons, to pursue a higher degree of learning. He truly cares for his students. He brings this same outlook to his role as assistant football coach. Mr. Burrows' ability to relate well to the players and his experience in athletics has greatly contributed to the team's performance throughout the season. He has also been involved in other facets of student life as an advisor. Not only has he provided guidance in this capacity, but companionship and enthusiasm, as well. It has been Mr. Burrows' constant assertion of optimism which has given us the hope to overcome seemingly impassable obstacles. His sacrifices as advisor have helped make possible our many class activities. It is because of his continuing quest for excellence as a teacher and as a person that the class of 1986 chooses to honor him. 16 18 Administra tion The time has come to say goodbye to the Class of 1986. You leave Fitch Senior High School well prepared for the future. You take with you all the skills and knowl- edge to live full, happy and productive lives. I wish each and everyone of you no less than that. John R. Murphy John Murphy Principal Dear Class of 1986: I want to congratulate all of you for reaching this important milestone in your life, graduation from high school. Your accomplishments should be viewed with great pride. Fitch Senior High School has always been a school with fine academic standards and you, the Class of 1986, are the first class to graduate under even higher and more stringent academic standards. Be proud of this accomplishment, continue to grow as students and people, and be successful at whatever you do. To The Class of '86: Congratulations on your success, and my best wishes for your continued success in the future. Find a purpose in life and pursue it with determination. Please allow me to leave you with a quotation from Whittaker Chambers . . . “When you understand what you see, you will no longer be children. You will know that life is pain, that each of us hangs always upon the Cross of himself. And when you know that this is true of every man, woman, and child on earth, you will be wise. Robert J. Brown Piela, Jr. Vice - Principal v,ce - Principal TO THE SENIORS: Today is an exciting time to be taking a step in a new direction; a challenging time to plot your life's career. Technology has opened up a whole realm of opportunity unburdened by the barna- cles of the past and paying equally for the talents of men and women. Set your goals for the year 2000; establish your objectives now to reach those goals; use your imagination; be positive; think cre- atively about your purpose; and plan for a way to provide some measure of service to our demo- cratic way of life — a commitment to the individ- ual, the community, the state, and the nation. We urge you to strive constantly toward betterment of self in all that you do in the years ahead. This small world of ours needs you, our promising youth. Congratulations and Best Wishes for a pro- ductive and personally satisfying future. TO: Fitch Graduates Be polite and friendly, work hard - everything else will come naturally. D. The performance of the band, Para- dox, was highly commendable while the mixing tunes of D.J. Bruce Alston attracted many danc- ers. The color scheme for this year's dance was royal blue and silver. The full effect of these brilliant colors was added when Doreen Mac- Gillis was crowned the 1985 Homecoming Queen in her lovely royal blue dress. The warm friendly smiles of the Homecoming court set the mood for fun and excitement. Hanna, B. Winkler, J. Gorsuch, D. White, C. Eastman, D. Hines, S. Clarke This year's musical production, Roger's and Hammer- stein's South Pacific, was chosen by the directors primarily because the show is so different from those which the club has most recently undertaken. Compared to The Pirates of Penzance (1985) and Man of LaMancha (1984), this year's show is much less formal. The music, characterization, and blocking-a technical term for the positioning of actors on the stage-are all significantly easier to prepare for in South Pacific. After working on more difficult productions for the past two years, this year the directors searched for a show to have fun with. As Miss Barbieri commented, We wanted a show that would be more enjoyable, that would bolster drama and music spirit and that would allow us more free- dom to enjoy the cast, crew, and show. Both members and advisors of this year's club have no- ticed encouraging results of the blending of sophomore with upperclassmen and students with advisors. For exam- ple, the advisors have noticed among members much less tension than has been experienced in the past. There have been fewer ego and personality clashes, and much more harmony among cast and crew. These positive vibes, the advisors note, effect the overall production. Senior Amy Rogers agrees, citing the group's camaraderie as its most positive asset this year: I think the closeness of the group will carry over into the show and help make it an outstanding performance.' In addition, Miss Barbieri and Mr. Dehls com- mented on the harmony they share in working together. They say that if there are clashes between directors, espe- cially in a musical, those clashes could be detrimental. They consider it very fortunate that there is chemistry between the advisors.' Another positive outcome this year has been the pit band. As early as January, the group was more prepared than ever before and was able to begin playing at rehearsals as early as the second week of production. Commented one pit band member, By production time, we should be untouchable.' Probably the most successful venture of the club aside from the production itself, has been led by club president Heidi Kluck. After attending The Center of Creative Youth at Wesleyan University last summer, Heidi was able to bring nightly theatre exercises and improvisational v -rkshops to the club. The entire club has largely benefited from Heidi's talent. As the club concludes another successful year of hard work and great fun, everyone involved once again will walk away feeling that special sense of accomplishment and self- pride that Miss Barbieri defines as her goal in coaching dra- ma. Club members look forward to a successful future, both within the club and beyond the walls of the busy auditorium and the Fitch Drama Family. As president Heidi Kluck adds, Drama is a lot of hard work, but the members create a close-knit family that lasts throughtout the year, unlike the sports groups which form and break up with the seasons. Probably the closest friends we'll ever make will be made in this club and will last a lifetime.' M. Fitzgerald, L. Overton, J. Collins, R. Martin, M. Gemma, A. Pellish, G. Hildebrand, M. Tarbox, L. He cares so much about people that I love spending time with him at drama rehearsal and choir practice. He's always able to get his point across with a joke or a witty remark. Not only does he have a great sense of humor, but he is committed to his students. He's a good joke-teller and a great friend. These quotes, from Fitch students and faculty, as well as members of the community, describe a tireless, jovial man with a deep love of the arts - a man who delights in passing on that love to his students. Here at school, he directs the Mixed Chorus, the Concert Choir, the Chamber Choir and the Fitch Singers. He has brought his expertise to numerous productions of the drama club, including the recent produc- tion of South Pacific. Working closely with Alida Bar- bieri, the drama coach, he has supervised choreography and musical production numbers for these performances, help- ing to coordinate the actors' voices with the orchestration of the Pit Band, which he conducts. Recently, he has taken on a new challenge: directing the Mystic River Chorale, a com- munity-based singing group comprised of approximately forty-three Mystic and Groton residents who have nothing but enthusiastic praise for their conductor. He is a devoted family man who spends what spare time he has with his wife and young daughter. At thirty-five, James Dehls has hit his stride and shows no sign of slowing his pace. How or why did you get involved in teaching music? For the money! I was greatly influenced by my high school director. I love to sing and conduct and this seemed like a logical job choice. What aspect of your job here do you enjoy the most? Seeing students find a positive way to express themselves and experience at least one of the great arts. Hopefully, I will help them develop a skill and talent that they will use forever. Mr. Dehls invites the classes of 1987, 1988, and 1989 to join the drama club and chorus. 129 Color Guard D. Anchored by seniors John Drew, Tony Trisciuzzi, Ron Beasley, Don Fallon, and tri-captains Doug Brown, Gregg Landry, and Todd Clarke, the group anticipated a highly successful season. But early in September after several weeks of practice and conditioning, they found themselves faced with a 2-2 record. Advancing, the team ran up against E.O. Although the season ended on a sour note, there were many triumphs throughout the year. All-Stater Todd Clarke established a new single season scoring mark with 31 goals, while junior Paul Menhart set a new record with 14 assists. Their many accomplishments would not have been possible without the combined efforts of the entire team and Coach Nasser. The team's nucleus has been together for close to 10 years, and as a result, they are supportive and protective of each other and of their accomplishments. The team's hard work and dedication helped determine the success of the girl's season. Some of the racTe courses were really tough, claimed the girls. The most memorable one was the race at the Coast Guard Academy against New London High School. The girls found themselves covering extremely rough terrain. The course required running through mud and sand, crossing small streams, and hiking up tremendous hills. As it turned out, though, the Falcons easily outran the Whalers, beating them by twenty points. It must have been those killer speed workouts that made the girl's team such strong competitors. Some days they were required to run a hard five miles, then head for the track to be timed in a 1500-meter run. The endurance of the team came from six or seven mile runs through Bluff Point and Groton Long Point. The competition was fierce, including two of the top five teams in the state, but the girls did more than hold their own. Tough conditioning, hard work, a desire to win, and hustle molded this young team into a competitive unit. Their practices were grueling, often requiring the girls to do numerous sprints after an exhausting two- and-a-half hour workout, but this conditioning, along with their innate quickness, was the backbone of their fast-paced style of game. Combining a free-wheeling fast break offense with an aggressive and anticipating defense, the girls were able to run their opponents ragged—but in doing so, they also wore themselves down in the process. This injury-plagued squad probably went through more rolls of tape than the Football team, but despite these setbacks they refused to give up, and this deter- mination brought them success and a bid in the CIAC tournament. Although the season entailed a great deal of hard work, good times and laughter were present. One day the girls decided to have a little fun and left a note to the coaches saying they had all went home and could (cont'd p. 161) Top: Dianne Flatley, Debbie Reuss, Michelle Leger, Margaret Baird, Deanna Mackin Bottom: Debbie Blanton, Sherry Galusha, Kathy Gailor, Paige Pagnucco, Tara Howard Missing: Rachel Small, Katie Nichols That's concentration? 160 not make practice. The girls hid in the gym and finally came out when they could no longer conceal their laughter. As for individual highlights the girls had many. Senior Co-Captain Kathy Cailor surpassed the school career scoring record by netting her 763rd point in mid-sea- son; and then went on to break the 1000 point mark. Sherry Galusha, also a senior Co-Captain, had a great rebounding year for the Falcons. She has a superb all- around game against a tough Waterford team in a close loss. Debbie Reuss, along with Sherry, was tough on the boards and was second on the team in scoring. Debbie Blanton has a tremendous game against Waterford by playing superb defense and hitting some crucial foul shots down the stretch. Michelle Leger rounded out the starting five and also had a terrific defensive season. Her quick hands and fast feet allowed her to steal many passes. Wrestling The Fitch Wrestling Team put on several exciting home matches this year, and hope- fully everyone who had a chance to watch took advantage and came. The Matmen's road show was equally as good and a great deal more home meets are expected next year. The wrestler's record ended up as 15-9-0 with wins over Rockville, New London, Kill- ingly, Fermi, Conard, East Hartford, East Lyme, Montville, Holy Cross, St. Bernards, Rham, Branford, Guilford, East Catholic, and Windham. The Matmen lost to tough teams in Ledyard, Foran, Glastonbury, Malorey, Hall, Berlin, Waterford, Hand, and N.F.A. Fitch took fourth in the New London tour- nament and expects to do well in the state meets where the ranking is based on the top six scorers of each team. The Fitch Gymnastics team displayed an overall im- proved record as the girls worked closely together. One major goal the team members set for themselves two years ago was to break 100 points in a competition. Their aspirations were finally fulfilled on the night of Jan. 30 in the meet against North Branford when they scored a winning 102.85 points, just two points under the school record. Not only did this competition mark a major turning point in the history of the team, but it also proved to be one of the most exciting and rewarding evenings in the gymnasts' careers. Much of the team's success can be credited to second year coach Pam Romberg, whose enthusiasm has helped create a sense of closeness and dedication among the gymnasts. Sister to Coach Romberg is co-captain Rachel Manfred who held the leading all-around position on the team the entire season while co-captain Jessie Gib- lin also led her teammates until season's end. Other members of the team included seniors Mindy McNeil and Jen Maisch who made significant contribu- tions with their talented performances. All in all, the girls worked well together and unified the '85-'86 gymnastics team; they are proud of their success. First row: Jen Neilson, Regina Zalegowski, Dana Bussierre, Nancy Menhart. Jessie on the uneven bars Swimming The Co-ed Swim Team dove into a tough season with a far from winning record. Even though the small team had a 0-12 record the spirit was never lost. Enthusiasm was at its highest at the Waterford meet when the team lost by a score of 78 to 86. Many indi- viduals showed winning form while others improved greatly during the three months. Senior Co-Captain Brian Charette led the team with a undefeated season in the 500 yard Freestyle and 11-1 record in the 200 yard Freestyle event. Other contributing se- niors were Co-Captain Sue Porter in Individ- ual Medley and Butterfly; John Wynne in Breast Stroke and Freestyle; and Tim Stead- man, in 200 yard and 500 yard Freestyle. Un- derclassmen scoring high were Junior Tom Hartman, Fitch's sole diver and Sophomore JoAnn Bergrud, an all-around competitor.
