1961 3 4 7 If men knew how women pass the For me, my craft is sailing on. Through mists to-day, clear seals anon. Whate'er the final harbor be. 'Tis, good to sail upon the sea! 13 John T. Monahan Superintendent of Schools You have survived all of the trials and tribulations which f with growing up. Now you poise on the threshold of the re of your lives. We all believe you are ready to go forth and do daily batt with all that is still to come. Parents, teachers, administrators, and friends have all helpe to shape what you are and what you will become; but, tf greatest shaper is you! Whatever you may do ultimately is yours to determine an yours to accomplish. We believe you are capable of both. Th, is the true basic reason for schools; to provide yoi background for adulthood. We are filled with pride for you and with you as you finis phase one. Phase two lies just ahead. Congratulations, and the best c life's rewards to you! John T. Monahan Superintendent of Schools March 6, 1981 The Class of 1981 will always be very special to me. It seems like such a short time ago that you were sophomores and I was the new Principal at Fitch. Many wonderful things have happened in the interim. We have jested about my insistence that Fitch is number one, but we know it is true. It is true not only because of outstand- ing accomplishments of individuals and groups, but also because of all the little things that make our school a special place to be. As I think back, there are many special memories of people and events. Now the time has come for you to leave Fitch. You will not be here, but you will not be forgotten. I wish you all success and happiness in the future. John R. Murphy Principal John R. Murphy Principal 18 Congratulations to those of you who have met the re- quirements for graduation. You have achieved a worthwhile goal and a measure of success. I am sure that all of you have that feel- ing of pride and satisfaction that comes from a job well done. Now that you are embarking on a new life, you will have the opportunity to choose many new goals. It is important for everyone to have goals because they provide you with an impor- tant reference point, incentive, a sense of direction and a purpose in life. There are really two kinds of goals — short range and long range goals. Everyone should have some of each kind, but both kinds should be realistic and to some extent attainable. Let your goals be the guiding stars from which you obtain your bearings as you navigate a new course through life. Even though you may encounter detours and frustrations, keep your goals in sight. You have already learned that goals are only achieved through hard work. This will enable you to relive that feeling of pride and satisfaction over and over again. My best wishes to each and every one of you. Good Luck!! Louis Caovette Vice Principal Graduation is here for all of you. It is a very important milestone in your life. You leave Fitch Senior High a more com- plete and mature person with new horizons before you. Hopefully, you have learned well and will be fully equipped to meet your future challenges and be a success. Remember your days at Fitch. They will be fond memories for most of you because of the friends you have met and your growth as a per- son intellectually, socially and physically. I hope your years at Fitch have molded all of you into fine young gentlemen and women ready to take on college and life. Always, treasure education and get as much of it as you can in life. Don't waste the opportunity to use your mind, it always thirsts for knowledge. Life is too short to waste time, so cherish every moment and use it wisely. We all will miss you here at Fitch. May the best come your way always. Vice Principal Robert j. Brown Vice Principal 19 E n g I i s h Arthur Pearson Dept. Head U.R.I., B.A., M.A. Mrs. Lorraine Santangelo Conn. There would nave been less people getting in trouble, because nobody likes a study hall and there were a lot of people skipping. With unassigned, we wouldn't have to skip as much. Harvey Tri-Captains: Rob Chavira, Scott Khoury, Troy Cheatham Thames Award Winner - Brian Barnaby Attempting to repeat as a champion is difficult. Especially after considering the high calibre opponents Fitch competes against. However, in the initial phase of the 1980 season it appeared this years edition of Fitch football was going to do just that. Uncontrollable events began to occur forcing the team to go through a mid-season search for stability. Through this time period the team had some high and low moments. The highest and the lowest ironically coming against the same team. A last minute field goal victory versus St. Bernards started us on our way to the SAC crown. Five weeks later a last minute field goal loss to St. Bernards all but ended our hopes for the conference title. The squad, however, saved its best for last as it out dueled its last two opponents by the combined score of 81 to 6. To accomplish this feat after most of the pre- season goals were lost was truly an exercise in pride and persistence. A team that demonstrates such qualities as these is a winner regardless of its record. Coach Ellis Varsity Overall Record 6-4 29 W. Haven 12 0 Waterford 6 49 Norwich 14 17 St. Bernards 15 6 N. While ad- vancing from the standard 4-2 of- fense to the more complex 6-2 of- fense, the falcons fashioned a fine 9-3 record, and a number .10 ranking in the C.I.A.C. post season tournament. Highlights of the season included a school record of nine consecutive victories and a thrilling 3-1 victory over State Champion Valley Regional High School. Co-Captains were Laurie Blanton and Clare Clabby. Special awards were won by Clare Clab- by for Most Valuable Player, Best Server, High Scorer; Heather Cady for Most Improved Player; and Janice DeMara for the Coaches Award. Kneeling: Ruth Doyle, Julie Scully, Beth Wright. Our 4-15 won lost record was not in- dicative of the type of hard work and determination put forth by every player on the team. Injuries throughout the season to key players had to have an effect on some of the outcomes of our games, games that we lost by seven points or less. Bob Mc- Cain, Ted Doyle, Cary Johnson, Sean Amuan, John Hespeler, and Brian Wilson played most of the games and played hard. Key substitutes Mike Clinton, Jim Schneider, and Rich Marquardt along with Steve Sheffield and Mike Cummings did a fine job coming off the bench. I only wish the seniors were able to play another year because the future of Fitch Basketball seems bright with the advent of a good freshman crop and the return of key peo- ple. I wish the seniors the best of luck in their futures and would like to say thanks to the fans, faculty, parents, and students for their loyal support. The team's overall scoring average increased from the low 70s to an average of 90 points. This in- crease in team average reflects the improvement gained by each member of the team during the course of this season as well as from the previous year. The highest team score was 103.1 against New Lon- don. junior Crystal Bloeser set 2 school records by scoring an 8.0 in vaulting and an 8.2 in floor exercise. Sophomore Nettie Conat set 2 school records by scoring an 8.1 on uneven parallel bars, 7.45 on balance beam and 29.8 for the all-around score. Both Crystal and Nettie qualified for the state class 1 tour- nament. Tri-Captains Sarah Giblin, Crystal Bloeser and Lori Kent did an excellent job of leading the team dur- ing the course of the season as they set the examples for hard work and helped to develop tremendous team spirit. Coach jerry Carlone Senior star Tom Ward It got me! This year's swim team clearly dominated competition in the area. The teams record of eight wins and four losses was strong- ly contributed to by a talented group of seniors. Stellar performances were consistently produced by Jeff Csisar, Thom Ward and Don Award, Seniors Irene Carlson, Chris Chappell, Angie Shute and Mike Girard were always adding to team effort. The senior divers were never defeated as a unit. They contributed heavily to the team's success. All three qualified for the LL com- petition. All the senior members did a fine job and will be surely missed in the coming season. Next year's squad will look heavi- ly to several juniors to continue the seniors winning tradition. Ian Lange, Ted Staton, Hudson Maynard and Mary Lacerte will hopefully provide the efforts needed to lead the team. Sophomores Wendy April, Dana Award and jon Smith made their presence known this season and will probably be heard from in the future. 158 Aquarium's Latest Fish Superman!
