GANDIA Principal Truth is the secret of eloquence and of virtue, the basis of moral authority; it is the highest summit of art and of life. Henri Amiel When a man assumes a public trust, he should consider himself as public property. Thomas Jefferson TO THE CLASS OF 1976 The Class of 1976 will be one of the largest to graduate from Fitch Senior High School. As such you represent as a group, the finest that Groton has to offer. In the three years I have known you, I have grown to feel pride in the way you have been able to express yourselves and in the record which you shall leave behind for other classes to follow. In speaking to the faculty and other members of the administration, they all have indicated their faith in your ability to move ahead and to help make this a better world. With young men and women as dedicated and hard-working as you are I feel that our nation can rum over the reins of government, business and social services to you with full knowledge that you will carry on and do an excellent job. To the Class of 1976, I congratulate you and I pray that your future lives shall be pleasant and that all your plans and hopes will be fulfilled. My best wishes for your continued success and happiness. Ronald K. Gandia RICHARD F. CHAPMAN Superintendent of Schools 9 LOUIS CAOUETTE — Vice Principal PATRICIA J BERG — Dean We are living in an era in which there has developed a growing con- cern for the conservation of our natural resources. Along this vein, it would be wise to consider the most precious natural resource we have at our disposal — intellectual ability. If we succeed in conserving water, forests, and other natural resources and neglect the development of our minds, we have failed. I hope that you, the class of ’76, have taken advantage of the oppor- tunities offered you at Fitch Senior High and have developed your thinking processes to the greatest degree. If you have fallen short of this goal, and most of us have, I trust you will work even harder throughout your lives to continue to improve yourselves and become self-reliant, independent thinkers. Best wishes to each graduate of the class of ’76, and may you achieve the success you deserve. P. J. Berg The Class of 1976 is unique in that it is graduating in the Bicenten- nial Year. Two hundred years ago young people of your age were fight- ing and dying for freedom and liberty . . . the same freedom and lib- erty you enjoy today. One hundred years ago young people of your age were still trying to establish freedom and liberty for ALL citizens. Today after two hundred years the conflict still has not come to an end. It seems that the struggle for freedom and liberty is never ending. While the present conflict docs not involve bullets it is nevertheless very real to many people who every day must fight the battles of pov- erty, disease, discrimination, injustice and ignorance. Just look around you and you will find that these problems involve each and every one of us, either directly or indirectly since they arc part of society. The Class of 1976 is better equipped educationally to cope with the challenges that confront you and stand in the way of a hater life for ALL its citizens. Always remember that the freedom and liberty you presently enjoy is your inheritance from previous generations who were willing to fight for it. Your children must live in a world you bequeath them. What will it be like? Nobody knows. To you I say, Go forth and spread the Spirit of ’76.” There is still much to do. My best wishes to each and every one of you. Louis Caouette CLIFFORD C. TAYLOR — Dean The three unique years spent in school at Fitch Senior High are but launching pads for your uncharted futures. It is my hope that the expe- riences we shared have given each member of the class of 76 a sense of worth, purpose and direction which will be helpful in solving life’s future problems. To each of you: Congratulations upon your gradua- tion, and best wishes for long and successful careers in whatever you choose as your life’s work. C. It is just fantastic . . . coming here as an exchange student and get to know all those new people and learn about their country has been the greatest experience in my life. I have discovered many things about this community and school system which will help me to get a greater understanding of the whole world. To bring together and unify a world of differences into a common humanity demands people to accept ideas suggested by different races. Things can be differ- ent without being better or worse — just different! This year has given me great opportunities to learn a lot I didn’t even know about earlier, and I’d like to thank all my friends and my family for giving me this chance. You have all made this year interesting and enjoyable. Good bye, and thanks for all. Sincerely, 163 Rotary Sponsors New Zealand Student, Bronwyn To go to another country and learn their way of life is a fantastic experience. You not only learn their way of life but you also learn to appreciate the things you took for granted in your own country. It is great fun to go to exchange weekends where you meet lots of kids from other countries and also from your own. I wish to say thank-you to everybody I know at school who helped to make my stay enjoyable. 'the Kiwi’ Bronwyn relaxes in her Groton home 164 Evelyne Comes From Brazil With the Open Door Program Di! Many records were either set or broken, not by a separate individual but by many individuals together that comprised a winning team. Because of managers, team members, and many others the season was made possible, and I thank each one of them. This was also our first tournament team, and even though we lost the game the experience gained by the underclassmen should help to make future years successful. This can be attributed to the fine leadership of the co-captains, Pete Rybacki and Russell Musante. Both showed by hard work and dedication, an example that could not be overlooked by fellow team mates. To the fine group of young men who responded to the leadership and helped make the year a success. To Carl Reichard, the best paid or unpaid consistent coach at Fitch, his love of track and concern for excellence in effort, was instru- mental in forming a cohesive group of hard workers. So thanks to all involved in making this a bonne year. Surprisingly, the 1975-76 ver- sion of Fitch Wrestling, did accomplish many goals that their predeces- sors did not! For example; Placed 2nd in the Fitch Christmas Invitational with 731 5 pts . posted a record setting total of 12 victories along with a record total of 596 Team point, shut out an opponent 61-0 (only the 2nd shutout in school history), have a Jr. Varsity squad with a 14 and 2 record and 2 undefeated members (Kurt Hespeler 10-0) and (Tom Haddon 8-0). and I could go on. Their loss to St. Bernard’s was the low point for their season. At this point the girls began to mold into a team. The girls qualified for the CIAC State Tournament in their second to last game. Ranked 25th in their Division, the Falcon- ettes proceeded to beat No. 8 ranked New Britain and No. 9 ranked Roger Ludlowc. They- eventually lost in the quar- ter-final to No. 1 ranked Hall High School. The overall success was due to the entire team’s ability to perform as just that — a team. To Mrs. Pierce for her major contribution, thank you again. We are also indebted to our advisor. Mr. Walter Hunsinger, for his innumerable hours spent with us. Not even an editorship could bring these five people the sufficient public acclaim that they so tremendously deserve. Joanne Santanicllo, Tab Shanafelt, Dave Hall, Ellen VanDyke, and John Douglass have brought us through each chaotic deadline with their unflagging cheerfulness, humor, inventiveness and superior caliber of work. We thank you even though we realize simple thanks could never be enough. Lastly, the best of luck to Mark and Robin and the 1977 Tantara. The Editors
