I hope that the years you have spent in school have given you the background and strength to make this a finer and better world in which to live. In all the years of recorded history, adults have continually complained about the lack of respect and the inadequacy of the preparation of youth to meet the needs of society. Yet mankind has moved steadily forward. I am sure that you will meet the needs of our new and complex society and as the leaders of tomorrow, will have the opportunity to reflect upon your accom- plishments with pride. I hope that the last three years of your formal education at Fitch Senior High School have been pleasant and that the memo- ries will stay with you so that you will be able to fondly recollect upon these days in the future to give you strength, encourage- ment and understanding of the new generation that you will help to produce. Ronald K. Gandia RICHARD F. CHAPMAN Superintendent of Schools fidmwXsfcujftiOW RONALD K GANDIA Principal VICE PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE LOUIS CAOUETTE Vice Principal A question frequently asked by parents is, Do you think kids are smarter today?” My answer is an emphatic Yes, they need to be smar- ter.” This does not mean they have more gray matter, but merely that we are doing a better job in educating youngsters than a few years ago. My generation has made progress in education as well as improving our technology and is making a creditable start in cleaning up our environ- ment. However, the fact remains that all this is also a mixed blessing, since progress is always accompanied by new problems. It is no wonder that many youngsters are bewildered in a society char- acterized by accelerating change. With the age of majority at eighteen years of age, important decisions in problem areas such as drugs, sex, work, marriage and education must be made — sooner. A few years ago a youngster did a lot of growing up between 18 and 21 years of age. Now he must do it — faster. One thing is obvious to me, and that is that graduates more than ever before need a clear mind and all the education they can get to cope with their increasing problems. There is not a drug, pill or potion yet discov- ered that will help you, nor are there any substitutes, shortcuts or pana- ceas available. While our generation has improved our society and envi- ronment in many ways, we haven’t as yet made it easier for you to solve your problems. These are solved just as in the good old days” by just plain hard work. To the class of 1975 — Good Luck — and let’s get to work. PATRICIA J. BERG Dean Atoms arc the building block of all things. Fitch, too, is a building block but in a different way. She has built the character of her students and has built attitudes toward life and living. Yet there comes a time when, to accomplish its purpose, the atom must split. So Fitch each year breaks up as the seniors leave. In breaking up, however, the atom is not destroyed but only changed into other forms of existence. These forms can have either of two purposes — creation or destruction. Your lives will take similar paths, and you have a challenge to meet. Within the walls of Fitch ideas and principles have been laid down as a foundation. No88-c94w it is up to you, the class of 1975, to build from this foundation for it is a known fact that we must take a little of our yesterdays into our tomorrows, or the future will be cheated.” ROBERT R. WEISS Dean Hopefully, your three years here at Fitch have prepared you to meet the demands you will be confronted with in the next few years. One imponant aspect you should have mastered while here is that of self-dis- cipline. You will find this is a keynote to success. It is my hope that the disciplinarian’s office helped in this development. Best of luck to all of you for success and happiness! Roben R. Weiss P. J. Berg ROBERT E. GORMAN, Dept. Head State U. What we are doing now should be both satisfying and contrib- uting to what lies ahead. Awareness of self and awareness of opportunity are necessary ingredients in decision making. Although it is each students’ responsibility to explore and discover his own needs and abilities, the Guidance Department provides help through a comprehensive program of student services. These include advisement in course selection pointing toward educational and vocational objectives; special help in self-analysis; assistance in developing study skills; extensive information on colleges, specialized training schools, and occupations. In addition, the counselors attempt, along with other members of the school staff, to identify students with special needs and to focus the facilities of the school upon each individual. We Ve Only Just Begun” The old Chinese proverb of A trip of a thousand miles begins with one step” is especially applicable to your generation. You have taken or will shortly be taking your first step out of high school; your Journey through the future has just begun. Now is the time to decide what you want to do with the future. We have attempted to show you the mistakes and the successes of ours and earlier generations; now it is up to your generation to improve upon our shortcomings, especially in human relations. The lab consists of 29 carrols containing cassette players and headphones. Students are given assignments by their teachers who are responsible for them as they would be for regular homework assignments. Cassettes can be found pertaining to any level of any language offered at Fitch. The student may also view filmstrips if the course demands. The lab is only a year and a half old but we are only beginning but we expect to expand and improve as time goes on. 27 Sciewc DANIEL STRUNK Univ. of Missouri, B.S., M.E.D. One definition of Science is that it is knowledge coordinated, arranged, and systema- tized with reference to general truths or laws.” During your past twelve years of formal education,” the extent to which you have been exposed to knowledge and have profited by that exposure has depended largely on you. As you look back on these years later in your lifetime, perhaps only then, will you be able to sec that at this point, you’ve only just begun.” For no matter what your future endeavors may be, you will find that you are constantly being exposed to knowledge and that you are constantly being challenged to test the general truths” for their validity. It is our hope that we have been able to contribute to your beginning” by giving you some of the tools with which to meet these challenges. Best wishes to you all for the future. It is appropriate that mathematics has merited the title Queen of the Sciences” to the fact that it has a usefulness and a prestige that is indispensible to all the other physical and biological sciences. Early man lived in fear and awe of natural events because he could not explain them. Then gradually, he began to understand nature, and learned to enjoy and control her. Histo- rians speak of the epoch in which this understanding began to affect Western culture as the Enlightenment. Today that phrase has lost some of its meaning. The principles of the Enlightenment, sufficient to let us live in peace with the beasts of the forest, with the tides of the ocean, with thunder and lightning, are inadequate to still our new disquietude about rockets, com- puters, and bevatrons. A second Enlightenment is now needed in which man can live in peace with his own discoveries and creation, enabled by fuller comprehension to use them for his enrichment and his pleasure. Conn., M.A. With the advent of career education and the deep concern about preparing our students for the world of work, pressures have mounted to require business education programs to reach a new dimension. In an attempt to assist in the process of learning and to become even more critical of their program offerings, business educators have made substantial cur- ricular changes in the past three years. Every effort is being made to explore the most effec- tive means for preparing youth to become self-fulfilled individuals and contributing mem- bers of society. The major factor leading to this educational priority is the increasing demand for relevance in the entire structure. When students sense that their courses arc relevant to their need, they become moti- vated. They work harder, learn more, acquire a higher level of skill, develop a confident feeling of accomplishment, and become better workers and citizens. Career education DOES present a challenge to all categories of learning and to all disci- plines because it does effect change. We would certainly be remiss in our thinking if we were to say that We’ve Only Just Begun.” Rather should we say that our emphasis has increased on focusing the importance of making the students acquire particular informa- tion, and how it relates to his life, now, and after he leaves the classroom. The days of total disaster appear to be over, and the days of winning have arrived. The 1974 team faired well after a disappoint- ing start. We managed two wins in the con- ference (Weaver 26-24 and Public 7-0), some- thing which has not happened for several years. When you consider our record you would have to go back to the 60’s to equal it. There is a very fine core of players who will be returning for the 1975 campaign, and we expect that the 1975 team will equal or better some of the better records of the early 60’s. Cross Country Coach’s Message, 1974: Our 1974 cross country team closed with a 9-3-0 record, a most impressive showing for a green group.” (Of our five seniors, only Captain Jim Suarez was a regular varsity starter.) As I write this, the prospect for 1975 is golden. We should return rich in talented and seasoned runners, among them Pete Rybacki and Tommy Hobaica, who, with Jim Suarez won coveted places on the 1974 All-CDC team. To run with them we’ll be counting on Rich Fargo, Bobby Benbow, Skip Frechette, Bobby Ralls, Tom Tyler, and Scott Sanford. Close behind that group will be another, slightly younger but equally deter- mined. I have great expectations” for 1975. EDUCATION — A PRIMARY REQUIREMENT KNOWLEDGE — RESULT OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Engineering Requires Plenty of Both A college President and an Army General want to tell you about a new plan that lets you enlist in the Army and start college at the same time. About eighteen months ago. the Army began to de- velop a bold, new concept in cooperative education. Project Ahead. “The program began at one university in the Midwest. Interest was so great the Army decided to expand it across the country. Today, the program involves over attend while in the .Army, you’ll know beforehand the courses you’ll need for credit at the school you want to graduate from. “Secondly, the Army provides financial aid. College courses arc available to you while you’re in the .Army. And the Army will pay up to Introdu 500 colleges and universities. And it’s still growing. “Project Ahead’s structure is basically simple. But its benefits to young people and their parents arc enormous. “First of all, it is a unique individualized education plan. One that allows you to choose, if you qualify, an “alma mater” before you enlist. (Normally a participating school in your home area.) So no maner which college or colleges you 75% of the tuition for these courses. (After your enlist- ment’s over, you’ll be eligible for 36 months of financial assistance under the G.I. Bill.) “We, in the educational community, are enthusiastic about this new plan. In fact, many of us believe Projeci •Ahead will be as imponant to young people entering the Army as the G.I. Bill has been 1‘midail, 1‘urduf IMvrrut) to veterans “Project Ahead is the most exciting idea in educa- tion that the Army has ever offered. “Too often people in the service have taken college courses from one school, only to learn later those courses would not apply toward their degrees. Project college courses you take in the Army. And now we can make sure you get credit for the college courses you successfully complete. “Project Ahead is by no means a free ride. Because while you’re working toward a college degree, you’ll be serving your country'. You’ll be a soldier full time. Ahead: Ahead intends to change all that. “The Army, together with over 500 colleges and universities, has a plan. A cooperative system that lets you know ahead of time which courses you’ll need for credit at the school you’ve applied to and w ant to graduate from. “You’ll be receiving up Cetv Hx«l :Wrvand to75%ofthc Ourf of Sun. tuition for US.
