— m 1 There will be time To prepare a face to meet the faces that you meet; There will be time to murder and create. And time for all the works and days of hands That life and drop a question on your plate; Time for you and time for me, A'nd time yet for-a hundred indecisions. And for a hundred visions and revisions. Before the taking of a toast and tea . . . Do I d ue Disturj the universe? -hnJrninute there is time For decision and revisions which a minute will reverse. T. 5. Eliot from ong of J. Alfred Prufrock 'o o Glimpses do you seem to see of that mortally intolerable truth; thot all deep earnest thinking is but the intrepid effort of the soul to keep the open independence of her sea; while the wildest winds of heaven and earth conspire to cast her on the treacherous, slavish shore? Herman Melville 5 There ore the stars — doing their old, old crisscross journey in the sky. Scholars haven't settled the matter yet, but they seem to think there are no living beings up there. Just chalk ... or fire. Only this one is straining away, straining away all the time to make something of itself. The strain's so bad that every sixteen hours everybody lies down and gets a rest. Thornton Wilder 8 Will ever the day come when the wise link the joy of knowledge to youth's dream? Will ever the day come when Nature becomes the teacher of mon, humanity his book and life his school? Youth s joyous purpose cannot be fulfilled until that day comes. Too slow is our march toward spiritual elevation, because we make so little use of youth's ardor. Kahlil Gibran Ordinarily we don't suffer from the absurd character of our civilization, because we are tied to our superficial lives by the chain of daily actions. But there are moments when the scenery collapses, when the senselessness of our doily routines overwhelms us. The world itself is not absurd; irrational; neither is it ordered, rational; it only is. Absurdity arises when man tries to impose order and reason on the world. Albert Camus 10 I don't think it would hove got me quite so down if just once in o while — there was at least some polite little perfunctory implication that knowledge should lead to wisdom, and if it doesn't, it's just a disgusting waste of time. But there never is. You never even hear any hints dropped on campus that wisdom is supposed to be the goal of knowledge. You hardly even heor the word wisdom mentioned. 13 J. D. Each decade presented its own problems, and during each decade business teachers have risen to meet the challenge - whether it was the right to exist as an inte- gral part of the curriculum; be it to face the ever-present demand for change; or, be it the survival or the right to survive. What will the next decade bring? Surely the 1970's will tell, for the voice of the 70’s is the voice of youth. The voice keeps repeating . . . Make it real! Teach us things that are relevant. Certainly, there is no segment in the curricula that has as many opportunities to teach what is real as the area of business education. Never have we had so many opportunities to make it relevant for teachers, for the community, and, most of all, for our young people. Never have our young people been so knowledgeable and so keenly aware of the problems that surround them; and, never have they been more receptive to a real and relevant approach. Now is the time for business education to move forward with great resolution. Now is the time to accept the chal- lenge of change. We must do more than re-evaluate and revise. We must incorporate into our curriculum offerings, experiences that are not only vital, but also of 1970 and even 1980 vintage. K. N. BARBER APPLIANCES Rte. 184, Mystic 140 Frederick W. Your efforts were so successful that we literally blew the rest of the league off the mat. For the rest of your lives you will be able to carry this feeling of working hard and accomplish- ing true victory. The true athlete first has command of himself, after which he has a burning desire to win. He is too discreet to question an official decision and man enough to forgive another's error. Most of us have shared both the “picnics as well as the deadline races, all of which have involved diligence, laughs, and headaches. We floundered around a bit until something like cooperation drifted into the pictures. Hope- fully it will gather the pictures, the art, the print, and the cover into a past we won’t mind remembering. And we can only wonder if we've dared enough. How about a pigeon on the cover? We've been fortunate to receive all the fact, patience, assurance and humor nec- essary to motivate the same elements in us. Our ideas have been equally respected, in spite of a diversity of both bizarre and ordinary, just as we have been. We’re not children, and Uncle Walt knows that, even when we tend to act like children. That’s just the way he is. To Jean Yves Solinga — Whose patience and generos- ity led him to the mud puddles. Happily, he’s young enough to appreciate dirty fun and to photograph a strange day for laughs. To Jane Williams — She’s been as radiant and efficient as could be desired in her handling of our finances. That smile is one of the kinder aspects of the Administration. To Jeanette Beach — Her ability to keep a secret culminated in the fine photographs and selections she lent us for the Dedication pages. And she’s one of the most alive persons.
