'60 senior high groton, conn. Almighty God As we walk boldly through the morning of our lives, Step Thou vividly into each day's brightness; Shade our lives with Thy presence That we may have sight for Thee, And prepare us for Thee daily. To our human gropings lend Thy divine guidance. To our failures apply Thine ancient mastery, Let our fatigue be but catalyst to Thy strength. Arm our fright with a prophet's courage, And persuade us in Thee daily. Confront us with the holy tasks of sharing Earth's wealth, God's healing, man's knowledge. Teach us, through the disciplines of sacrifice and consecration, To blend our will with Thy will for all creation. And love us to Thee Daily. Amen. Dedication We, the class of nineteen hundred and sixty, proudly dedicate this, the third edition of the Tantara, to Mr. John Beach, who truly exemplifies the spirit of Polonius' famous words in Hamlet, To thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man. 4 To the Class of 1960 Remembering is a privilege reserved for the individual. It is for each to use as he sees fit. To you the Class of I960, the privilege is at your command. Unlike most privileges it does not have to be earned. It is there to be used and enjoyed at a moment's notice. Remember the fun you've had — use these memories when you need cheering up. Remember your successes — use them as incentives to greater efforts. Re- member your fellow students — they have had a part in shaping your personality. Remember your teachers — their influence will be with you forever. Remember your school — you have had a part in building its character. Remember your parents, your community, your church. Remember all you can — and use it! MR. GEORGE TYLER Principal Superintendent’s Message To the Class of 1960: You have every right to be proud of your graduation. Certainly your parents and your teachers are proud of what you have accomplished. It is a significant achievement. At the same time I hope you might have some feeling of gratitude for the opportunity you have been given. For your opportunity to obtain a good education did not arise by chance; it was the result of sacrifice, study, and hard work. The sacrifices your parents have happily made, you must know; per- haps you might overlook the financial sacrifice the citizens of Groton have made in your behalf. To know that it costs about five thousand dollars of tax money to carry each of you through twelve grades may give you some idea. Through their own study, hard work, and devotion, your teachers have tried to offer you the best possible education. They have been happy to do so and hope you have taken good advantage of it. All these sacrifices made on your behalf and the work invested in you show the faith your parents, your teachers, and the people of Groton have in you. They are proud of you and know that their faith in you is justified. Please accept my personal congratulations and sincere best wishes for your continued success. ROBERT E. GAINES Board of Education FIRST ROW, left to right: Mrs. George Sossman, Mr. W. F. Scott, Mrs. A. W. Le wandrowski, Mr. Ralph O. Lewis. SECOND ROW: Mr. Jay S. Buckley, Mr. War ren L. Molton, Mr. Robert MacGregor. To The Class of 1960 One of the weaknesses which we have at times, is the tendency to take for granted, as factual, statements made by others seemingly au- thoritative. Many times the endorsement of such statements is due to a belief that the speaker, or author, knows what he is talking, or writing about; at any rate what he says sounds logical. If one can but have the time, and the facilities, in this busy life to search for facts, the result will be rewarding. The trip made by President Eisenhower to Europe and Asia, last Decem- ber, is an illustration of a man, who seemingly had at his disposal the most factual information regarding the conditions of our foreign relations. But, his desire to see and hear for himself, will make our world position more secure. Seek the truth, and the truth will make you free.' May your fondest hopes come true! Best wishes to you all. C. 104 COACHES: Mr. Anderson, Mr. Butcher, Mr. O'Brien This year's Tanager Eleven will be remembered as one of the finest teams Fitch has fielded in many years. Not only did the team retire the ECC trophy by defeating Stonington, Killingly and Waterford, but they also upset undefeated, untied, and unscored- upon Woodrow Wilson. Together with these thrilling victories the team suffered several heart breaking defeats. The Tanagers lost to Rogers High of Rhode Island 13-0 and Hartford Public High School 6-2. The game at Hartford was a good example of the fine defensive play displayed by the team all season long. Much of the credit goes to coach Tom O'Brien and his defensive specialists, Peter Barti- nik and Tom Williams. The Tanagers closed out the season by defeating New London 20-18 in the annual Thanksgiving Day Classic, before a record- breaking crowd of more than 5,000 spectators. This was the first victory for the Black and Gray over the Whalers since 1954. Be- hind in the third quarter 6-18, Fitch staged a tremendous come- back scoring two touchdowns in the final quarter. Led by a 70 yard touchdown run by co-captain Bob Bailey and a superb goal-line stand in the waning minutes the Tanagers eked out the victory, thus ending a successful season. Pile-up R. SAXTON R. Summary This year's Cross Country Team showed up well in duel and triangular meets, winning or placing in all. In post season events Ray Crothers and Paul Carter paced the squad to a seventh place in the Eastern Sectional Cross Country Run and eighth place in the State meet. Crothers, for his outstanding performance in the State Meet, was invited to run in New England's where he placed fourth. With so much depth in the team this year, next year's squad should prove to have an equally fine season. No mistake here in Basketball FIRST ROW, left to right: R. Jackson, Mgr., M. Anderson, R. Co-captain 6'8 Dan Nilsson in addition to grabbing numerous rebounds set a school record for most points scored in one season by an individual. Coupled with Nilsson's rebounds, co-captain Butch Miller and speedster Bob Bailey were able to fast break the opposition whenever called upon by Coach Hun- singer. Rounding out this fine starting five were Mike Anderson, consistent scorer and competitor, and Al Durr, a top rebounder and defensive standout. In Class M competition Fitch was the victor in all but one of its games, losing only to Stonington. Due to this superb record of victories, the Tanagers were able to cop the E.C.C. crown and to be rated second in the State. Fitch qualified for the medium school state tournament conquer- ing exciting games from St. Thomas Seminary and Plainville, last year state champs. The Tanagers advanced into the semi-finals; a point position which no Fitch team has gained since 1946. However, our season drew to a close as we bowed to Abbott Tech in a nip and tuck game which saw Nilsson sprain his ankle and leave the game on the first play of the second half. The new baseball diamond being built will afford students the chance to observe the games, and thus provide the diamond men the support they deserve. Since the Meehan-Men will compete in the E.C.C. and Class M competition for the last time, the team will be striving for a first place finish and a successful season in our class. Fresh from last year's E.C.C. and Class M State Indoor Meet triumphs, the harriers will be working toward a repeat performance. Aided by the new track and the strong desire of the boys, Mr. Anderson is eagerly looking for- ward to a successful season.
