’59 senior high groton, conn. today we follow; tomorrow we lead FITCH SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 3 dedication with fond pride, the class of 1959 of robert e. fitch senior high school pledges this, its second edition of the tantara, to mr. harry w. nelson for the years of dedicated teaching that he has contributed to hundreds of students, both during and after school hours, always ready to help, his services can he willingly prevailed upon whenever needed. 4 to the class of 59 nineteen hundred and fifty-nine marks a very special year for you. it is the year you are about to step over the threshold into a new realm of responsibility, your education and your activities have all been directed towards training you to be able to override the barriers of birth, wealth, and social status, with the development of your talents and the knowledge that you have acquired, you have the potential to achieve great heights; but more important than this ability to achieve is the sense of values that you have acquired, the values which have lighted the pages of history: the pursuit and love of truth, the passion for justice, the love of beauty in all its forms, the intelligent use of human freedom, the respect for the dignity of the individual person, the capacity for sacrifice, and the reverence for things spiritual, these are the values, or among the values, which you must personify, practice, and cherish if you are to fulfill your obliga- tions and responsibilities, in the words of horace mann. “no man should leave the world without having contributed something to his family, neighborhood, country and nation.” let us hold steadfast to this conception of the school and of our mission. principal peter e. nikula to the members of the class of 1959: as you assume greater responsibilities you will become increasingly aware of the extraordinary needs of the age in which we live; needs for things material, needs for the thoughtful intelligence, and above all. needs for greatness of the human spirit, millions of humans live on the numbing edge of starvation, terrifying physical forces, unleashed on earth in the name of war. and yet little tamed, and man stands poised for his inevitable leap, to the stars, hatreds still blight men’s hearts, and for it people are crushed, no generation has had placed before it a world as crowded with imperative needs as has yours, and no generation has ever had placed before it such an opportunity for greatness as has yours. greatness only comes with struggle—only when people face mountainous challenges and then stretch themselves to reach above, the picture of Washington our hearts cherish is not that of a man receiving the presidency of the young republic, but that of the man who was confronted by an agonizing winter at valley forge and who stood strong before it and achieved greatness. do not be frightened or made timid by what you see before you. but be happy in the knowledge that you have a magnificent opportunity to achieve greatness. knowr that our prayers and blessings go with you and that we shall watch you with pride. w. robert gaines superintendent left to right: marion w. lebuis, jay s. buckley, robert macgregor, jessie c. plumstead, freeman r. hathaway, warren 1. molton, ralph o. lewis. board of education to the class of 1959: the class of 1958 graduated one year ago; at that time the hope was expressed that its members would recognize the vast changes being wrought in the world, today—the tempo, has increased, and the in- ternational situation continues to develop into a crisis, how soon this crisis will require decisive answers, depends upon the actions of our country.. our leadership has grown through education of the people in its broad phase, not the education of the dictator type, where the individual learns very little of the art of living with his fellow man. education is knowledge, we, who have followed the passage of you, the class of 1959. as your members have been with us, have full confidence that you will pursue your education to your fullest abilities, and in this way help to sustain our country in its efforts to have a better world in which to live. may every success go with you. freeman r. hathaway, chairman groton board of education 8 a c u I t 9 mrs. claire w. anderson homemaking framingham state teach- ers college, b.a. mr. john beach united states history, world history georgetown university, b.s; tanager machinery slipped into high gear, led by backfield co-captains, john carney, terry brown, and bill mattern, the tanagers won the eastern Connecticut conference by defeat- ing stonington 30-8, and killingly 30-20. in their next two tilts the butchermen went on to triumph over their two opponents, woodrow wilson high 24-12, and west haven 36-10. coming down the homestretch in mid-november, the red birds chalked up another sparkling victory, again spurred on by the backfield terry, a touch of a star eat 'em alive aerial king combination, the butchermen shattered a two-year winning stretch of putnam high with a 16-8 setback, on a frigid thanksgiving day, the redmen ended their football season by dropping a heart breaker to new london. getting off to a brilliant start, the fitchmen looked as though they would be in for an easy win. with a surprising attack the new london whalers shot into an unconquerable lead of 19-14. leading to the final gun. the tanagers couldn’t make up this deficit, and as the closing minutes ticked away, the 1958 football season drew to a close. master jerome 99 concluding a successful grid season, john camey and donald labombard received coveted awards for their brilliance and leadership exhibited throughout the season. camey, co-captain and fullback of the football squad, was elected by area sports writers and coaches, athlete of the year for the new london area, competing with all athletes of the varying sports, camey was singled out as the best all-round player. labombard, varsity football center, also brought recognition to himself and fitch with his election to the all-state football squad, competing with many talented centers on squads all over the state, don was picked on the class m, all-state team. 101 front row: p. dcschamps, co-captain t. brown. basketball seasons come and go, but very few incite remembrance and remain distinguished from other seasons, in the minds of coach hunsinger and his squad, this season can be looked upon as one of the rarities, in defeat as well as in victory. with the finest team spirit and drive ever displayed on a tanager basketball squad, the cagers racked up twelve wins as opposed to their eight defeats, with a minute and a half left in the ball game, the redbirds achieved a ten- point lead over rhode island champions, westerly, then, in a final outburst of scoring, westerly netted eleven straight points to set the tanagers back 53-52. history repeated itself in their next contest, the hoopmen again lost a ter- rifically clQse battle to new london by a score of 53-52. suffering its third most disheartening defeat, the hunsinger-men went down once again to new london 83-82. leading by a full twenty points at the start of the fourth quarter, the redbirds ceased scoring, new london proceeded to thunder with a game winning twenty-one points. during their winter vacation and with the advent of an invitation to a basketball jamboree in berlin. new hampshire. the squad departed for the white mountains, two games, and a three-da overnight road trip, defeating woodsville, n.h.. 52-47. but losing 6’8” dan nilsson with a sprained ankle, the redbirds went on to lose to berlin 69-56. tthus terminating a colorful tournament. traveling to gilbert and housatonic valley, the tanagers came up with two brilliant victories, after a game tying tip-in with one second to go by dan nilsson. the squad went into overtime play, displaying perfect basketball, co-captain, john livermore dumped in 14 consecutive points to give his team a 71-64 w'in. 102 livermore scores again the big man comes down get that ball! watch that tongue, butch john gives ’im the bump where’d it go? varsity form jack comes down with it butch, the butcher versatile instrument yes sirree roger, brian oops! 105 Watch that elbow, john too many hands spoil the shot once again, this time with 50 seconds remaining in the game, livermore and butch miller spearheaded the drive to defeat housatonic 64-62. with these two victories, gilbert and housatonic, under their belts, the tanagers qualified for c.i.a.c medium schools tournament play only to learn that they had been barred from entering, the c.i.a.c. stated that fitch had broken a tournament rule by playing two non-adjacent state teams, woodsville and berlin, n. h. following an appeal session, on the grounds that the berlin tournament had been sanc- tioned by the new england council of secondary school principals, advocates of the c.i.a.c tournament, fitch received its final negative answer from the c.i.a.c administration board. on this sour note, the 1958-59 season drew to a close. watch us next year, coach! track predominantly a sophomore and junior squad, with senior strength in the field events, the cindermen have the potential to develop into a strong unit. even with dashman terry brown and distance man ralph keel out with bad legs, coach george butcher sincerely believes that his squad, although not possessing many individual stars, can muster enough second and third place positions to come up with a successful season. the hutchermen in past seasons have controlled the class “b” indoor meet as they have completed four victorious years in that event, with the overall team strength they should cop this year’s trophy at yale. besides attending invitational meets at hartford. fairfield. and brown university, the trackmen will hold all their home meets at home for the first time since moving into the new school. relayers 107 diamond men first row, francis tashea, phil eleven returning lettermen, prom- ise to come through with a winning season, pending on the advent of a new baseball field, the squad will play all its home games here at 'school. coach clayton meehan feels that for the first time in his coaching career he has the right depth in his players enabling him to ob- tain the maximum strength from his squad, he also feels that this year’s schedule is the team’s most challenging, since we are playing a majority of class “a” schools, nevertheless, he feels that his boys can, and will, arise to the occasion. ‘a battery of co-captains” junior varsity
