O ' Brien 9 To the Graduating Class of 1978: This year marks the 75th Anniversary of Fisher Junior College. It is an appropriate time to take stock of the accomplishments of the college and the productivity of our 75 years. In 1903, thirteen students had faith in a new college which, as yet, had no public image, no achievements, and no recognition. Seventy-five years later, this college is a recognized institution of higher education, a leader in the two-year college field, enjoying full regional accreditation and empo- wered to grant two-year degrees. Thousands of graduates testify to the quality of education they received. They reside responsibly and successfully in a wide range of business, industrial and personal endeavors. Your life pattern is much the same as a college. Yo u begin with no accomplishments and no achievements. Contributions from life experiences, agencies and institutions like Fisher Junior College, faculty, and family all contribute to the panoramic development of your life. Look now, today, and evaluate your use of the past years. Make plans now to use the coming years with wisdom and judicious application of your talents. All of us here at Fisher Junior College hope we have helped you achieve a happy, wholesome, and productive life. This yearbook contains the memory of our moments together. We cherish them with you. Scott Fisher, President 10 Leo Paul Chasse HISTORY In 1903, two brothers, Myron C. and Edmund H. Fisher, opened a business school in Somerville, known as Winter Hill Business College. The school prospered, and in 1910 a branch school was opened at Dudley Street Station in Roxbury. Both schools were then named Fisher Business College. In 1919, a third school was opened in Central Square, Cambridge, and in 1920 a fourth branch was opened in Waltham, Mr. M. C. Fisher gave general direction to all of the four schools. The Waltham school was merged with the Cambridge school in 1925 and the Roxbury school was moved to a central location in Boston at 30 Franklin Street in 1926. In 1927, the Cambridge students were merged with the students of the Boston School. This now left two schools, one in Boston at 30 Franklin Street and one in Somerville at Winter Hill. In 1939, before Myron C. Fisher retired, his final project was the acquiring of new quarters for the Boston location at 118 Beacon Street — one of the finest mansions in the city owned by Mr. and Mrs. Henry P. King. In the new location a whole new era in education was ushered in at Fisher. Between 1939 and 1965 dormitories and additional classroom buildings were acquired from 102 to 118 Beacon Street, 131 and 133 Beacon Street, 181 and 183 Beacon Street, and 86 Marlboro Street, a total of thirteen buildings with a classroom capacity of 500 students. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts granted the privilege of the name. Fisher junior College in 1952; the awarding of the Associate in Science Degree in 1957; the Associate in Arts Degree in 1963; and the granting of honorary degrees in 1975. In the interest of economy dormitory buildings at 86 Marl- boro Street and 181 and 183 Beacon Street were sold in 1975 and 1976. Today young women study at Fisher in preparation for professional careers. The college has alumni that number into the thousands, perhaps 20,000, that have made their contribu- tion in business and industry, particularly in the greater Boston area. 14 Mr. and Mrs. John P. Your career and life here will always be valued and remembered by all of us. Thank you. 1 Mary A. Tonougar, B.S.Ed., M.A.T., Ed.M. 102 Mr. and Mrs. Rene Nicole Miss Tonougar came to Fisher i n September of 1957 as an instructor of foreign languages and Geography. She has been an advisor to many student groups, began the International Club, and was instrumental in gaining the W.U.S. Chapter to aid students in foreign countries. She has provided students with her own costumes, literary works, many other artifacts from her travels; and made many personal sacrifices. Miss Tonougar ' s career has been one with an emphasis on helping others. With her knowledge of different cultures, she has enriched students in both the classroom and in activities with World University Service. Her drive and en- thusiasm have stimulated many to dedicate themselves to the needs of others. In many ways, large and small, foreign students have been helped towards adjust- ment to our American lifestyle. Martha Bruch, President World University Service Mrs. Rita S.
