DEDICATION Many thoughts are passing through our minds as ive end our classroom days as Fisher girls. As alum- nae, we will he thankful for memories, loves, friend- ships, and careers which we might never have real- ized had it not been for Fisher. Our thoughts are forward-looking, but our hearts are remembering many events with one main ques- tion — What if . . . ? What would we be doing if we had not come here for our education ... if our families had not had the pride, the interest, the love, the determination for the best for us as their main goals? For their help, their guidance, their under- standing in our shortcomings, their pride in our achievements, their exemplary ideals, we have grati- tude beyond mere words. There have often been times when we should have said thank you but have not; and, as we become college graduates and finally realize how much we owe to you, we can find no better way to express our appreciation and deepest gratitude than to dedicate this, THE BEACON — 1961, to you, Mother and Dad. resident ' s Message How wonderful to think that just two years ago you entered Fisher without knowing either students or staff members; and yet, as you now complete this formal phase of your education, you have added another dimension to your life — not only through new experiences, but also through a rich association with so many new friendships which will remain with you for life. These experiences have truly carried you from the unknown to the known. Now, as you take your next step into the work-a-day world, where more than ever you are going to be on your own, we have high hopes for you, your growth, and your success. Your progress, you can be sure, will be followed by each member of the College staff, through the Personnel Department as well as through the alumnae bulletin. Our warmest wishes are yours, as you seek the abundant life. SANFORD L. FISHER, b.s., ed.m. President nd STAFF EDITH C. BOHN Admissions Secretary CAROL A. The Charles Viewer, the newspaper of Fisher Junior College changed its format in many ways during the past year. Under the sponsorship of Mr. Wilson and editorship of Jill Fortin and Mar- lene Cohen it was published monthly. Every edi- tion, which was printed on excellent glossy paper, in a pleasing colored ink, included pictures, fea- ture articles, news stories, by-lines and advertise- ments. A special Christmas issue carried crossword puzzles, pictures and Christmas stories. This is a college newspaper that is interesting to any reading public as well as to college girls themselves. We are proud of it. Second Row: Carolyn Winsten, Jo- anne Cosenza, Merrily Ceder, Donna Torno, Gail Hodgdon. Every student at Fisher Junior College is a member of the Student Government Association, which is directed by a Council made up of elected representatives and the presidents of all Fisher organizations. The Association ' s theme for the year was three-fold: higher edu- cation on campus, better student-faculty relationships, and better stu- dent-student relationships. The Association began active work at the beginning of the year by assistance to students at registration time, helping them with prob- lems of adjustment. A most successful dance, held early in the year, provided an opportunity for Fisher students to make friends with other college students in the vicinity. The Council conducted junior and senior class elections, and a mock national presidential election; as- sisted in several philanthropic projects; and sent delegates to nearby National Student Government Association conferences. The Associa- tion has acted as liaison to solve problems between students and ad- ministration. A New England blizzard eliminated the Association ' s traditional Christmas party, but the Council undauntedly went forward with its plans and held it later in the year. Student Government Association members have steadfastly encour- aged high standards of conduct and scholarship, and have worked throughout the year to develop its three-fold theme, assisting with those sponsored by other organizations of the College, and initiating activities of its own. The purpose of the International Relations Club is to create better understanding of foreign people, their culture, their political, eco- nomic, and social life. It is also the aim of the IRC to help acquaint foreign students with the American way of life. To better inform the students, the IRC had several well-qualified speakers. These included Francisco Cuervo, Cuban MIT student; Washington Okumu, Kenyan political figure; and Meron Medzini, Harvard graduate student of Far Eastern studies from Israel. These speakers lectured on the present and future problems of their countries. During the year the club also sponsored an International Food Sale, a U.N. poster contest, an Indian supper, an International Costume Ball, collected about 450 books for African schools, took part in the Decisions Program, and took a trip to the U.N. in the spring as a con- clusion to a busy year. Fifty girls received Pen-Pal names to write to young men and women all over the world. Many of the club members participated in outside affairs such as attending receptions for Latin American students at the Pan American Society. The performance of the world-renowned Indian dancer, In- drani; the lecture given by Carl deSuze, Africa: Giant at the Door; the Harvard International Glee Club Concert; and the Pan American Ball and International Ball were other outside activities that they at- tended. The International Relations Club, although new this year, was very active and concluded a successful year by joining the AIRC which incorporates all of the International Relations Clubs in the nation. The Fisher Junior College Newman Club is a member of the National Federation of Newman Club, the purpose of which is to establish Catholic Student Centers at secular col- leges and universities throughout the world. To encourage spiritual devotion, to discuss ques- tions relative to religion, and to establish a meeting place where students may socialize with others of the same faith is the aim of both the Federation and the Fisher Newman Club. Meetings are held at the college the third Monday of each month, when noted Catholic lay men and women are guest speakers. Such speakers as Mrs. Dan Callahan, who discussed Home Life for Women, emphasized the important role women play in the home, her rela- tion to her husband, to her children and to her community; and Mr. Michael Novak, Har- vard Fellow, whose stimulating and thought-provoking lecture, Catholic and Protestantism, clarified many questions of long standing, are but a few of the outstanding speakers en- joyed by the Newmanites. The members are encouraged to participate freely in the question periods which follow each meeting. The officers and committee chairmen plan interesting activities throughout the year. Outstanding among these have been a retreat at the Cenacle Convent, a Tea Dance co-spon- sored by the Christian Union, to which similar clubs in surrounding colleges have been in- vited, attendance at the Passion Play, and the annual Communion Breakfast at the close of the college year. During the year Rev. Thomas M. Finn, CPS, of the Park St. Information Center, Paulist Fathers, spiritual adviser, and Mrs. Dorothy M. Kelly, faculty adviser, are available for counseling and guidance at all times. A fellowship of student and faculty groups committed to the will of God in building new individuals and a new society according to the growing insights and faith of the cooperating Christian groups — this is the dedication of the Student Christian Movement in New England. In its initial year, the Student Christian Association at Fisher has been a living example of the description of its mother organization. Several interesting speakers were guests of the S.C.A., and many Fisher girls attended the performance of the Easter passion play, Pilate ' s Daughter, which was presented at Roxbury ' s Mission Church. Helping in Project Cleanup in Boston ' s South End, many members received deep and grateful thanks from the rectory at St. Stephen ' s Church. Col- lege vesper services were introduced into the religious life on campus, sponsored jointly by the S.C.A., the Talmudims, and the Newman Club. All three organizations also cooperated in sponsoring an Inter-Faith Mixer in the Spring. The Jewish girls of Fisher have formed a new organization, The Talmu- dims, whose purpose is to give us a better understanding of Judaism and give us the strength to have faith in our beliefs. The first meeting was held in the ballroom Wednesday, October 26. Rabbi Zigmund, the Regional Director of the Hillel Foundation in New England, spoke informatively on the forming o f the new organization. The group staged religious debates, workshops, dances, inter-faith meetings and participated in charitable work for their community projects. The Talmudims ' aim is to gain a clearer understanding of the ideals of true Judaism; to strengthen our faith in the One God; in our great leaders, Moses and the Prophet; to appreciate the laws and commandments given us by these leaders and to obey these commandments in daily life. The Talmudims hope that the classes will continue to uphold the tradition established this year and that the organization will become a permanent and valuable part of Fisher College activities. GLEE CLUB Janet LaGreca, President; Sharon Avery, Vice-President; Pat Bevelaqua, Secretary. Under the supervision of Louis Siegel, the 1960-61 Fisher Junior College Glee Club had a year of numerous and varied accom- plishments. Not only did this group of fifty students meet each Wednesday after- noon for a round of joyful and serious sing- ing, but they also appreciated the oppor- tunity of being coached by a man of such excellent talent. The Glee Club participated in several school assemblies, and other activities of the college. This year brought forth an out- standing glee club, and it will be a credit to the school in years to come. SWIMMING CLUB Splash, Splash! may remind you of a familiar song, but it also describes the YWCA pool Mon- day afternoons. At that time about twenty Fisher girls met regularly for instruction. Each week the girls assembled for lessons in fundamental and advanced swimming and diving. These classes were really enjoyable since all the strokes are done to a musical accompaniment on a good hi-fi system and the instructor can turn out as pretty a water ballet as you will see in any acquacade. The program lasted eight weeks and was repeated in the spring term. HUNT CLUB Once each week members of the Hunt Club went to the New England School of Equitation in Jamaica Plain. There they were taught the art and the sport of horseback riding. The girls in the elementary group quickly learned to trot and can- ter, while the advanced riders concentrated on jumping under the tutelage of Mr. G. Wright, their instructor. The club, which is sponsored by Mr. Laurence Hansen, planned a Hunt and a Moonlight Ride to end their activities for the year. COMMUTERS ' CLUB Front Roiv: Genevieve Champy, Audrey Layton, Pat Monahan, Eileen Nally, Treasurer; Sandra Dall, Secretary; Mrs. Judge, Advisor; Jean Nadeau, President; Gail Hodgdon, Vice-President, Judy Bernaby, Judy Cesati, Kathy Moran, Kathleen Stewart. Fourth Row: Sandra Smith, Marianne Ward, Linda McDormand, Carol York, Janet Mann. The Commuters ' Club is comprised of that group of Fisher girls who travel to and from Bos- ton daily. Its purpose is threefold: (1) to help students become better acquainted with one an- other, (2) to instill responsibility to one and all through the direction of its officers, and (3) to help those less fortunate and deserving. These things are accomplished through social events and worthwhile projects, such as distributing of food packages to needy families at Christmas and Eas- ter, and the presentation of a scholarship to a deserving commuting junior. Whether the commut- ers live near or far, the common interests of the club keeps them together and develops strong friendships which will endure long after college days. A hayride at the Lazy S Ranch in Canton, Massachusetts, followed by a dance at the Ponkapoug Grange Hall, was the first activity of the 1960-1961 season. The ski week end held by the Commuters ' Club (Feb. 24-26) at Istvan ' s Lodge at Mt. Snow in West Dover, Vermont, will long be re- membered by its participants. The girls enjoyed a week end of skiing, swimming in the outdoor 100° heated pool, and fine entertainment at the lodge. A golf program at Fisher was initiated this year by the Commuters ' Club. The girls, as well as the staff and faculty, enjoyed the lessons given by golf pro Ed Barry, from Pine Meadows Country Club in Lex- ington, Massachusetts. Needless to say, this program met with the com- plete approval of all concerned. Other events of the year included a night out at a Boston night club, a cake sale held at Sears Roebuck in Cambridge to raise funds for the club, and finally a beach party. ANDREW HALL Front Ron: Carole Mandell, Anne Shea, Arlene Elias, Judy Skehan, Judy Curtis, Carole Superson. Fourth Ron : Gail Maculewicz, Martha Loud, Roberta Zampieri, Jane Affleck, Carole Lindale, Linda LaFortune, Kathy Bassler, Judy Cole. Life at Andrew Hall during the past two years has been exciting, rewarding, and also quite hectic for the seniors. Aside from doing our daily task of homework, we will always remember the pleasant times we had together at our parties when we heard, B 5, N 42, being called during the Bingo games, or when Mrs. McKee, our House Director, would surprise us with her treats of candy, cookies, and ice cream. We will never forget our Christmas parties, to which we invited boys and girls from the Salva- tion Army. The expressions of joy and thankfulness on the children ' s faces when they came in sight of the huge tree and many gifts made us realize how fortunate we were. Last year we had a penny bank into which we dropped our pennies, etc., and we were able to send three children to the Morgan Memorial Fresh Air Camp. This year we are aiming to do the same. We have also given our old nylons and clothes to the Boston State Mental Hospital where they are much appreciated. We, of course, must make mention of our senior House Council members, Sharon Avery, Claire Gedutis, Tanya Maniatty, and Rae Wellington, and the fine job they did in keeping our dorm quiet during study hours — also, in giving out demerits. Yes, in years to come we will look back and treasure the fine times we had and the many friends we made while at Andrew Hall. Fourth Row: Judith Lovell, Joan Groves, Ellen Carroll, Lucy Rose, Ruth Levine, Loretta Johnston, Marilynn Myers, Jill Fortin. Edmund Hall has been busy during the past school year. It has watched the com- ing and going of its girls to a variety of activities, such as: Y. W. C. A., Ice Capades, lectures, the American Ballet, dances, movies, theatres, collecting for Multiple Sclerosis at a pro basketball game, and various college weekends. Edmund was entertained at a Hallowe ' en Party by Florence. It had a wonderful time watching its girls ducking for apples and singing. Christmastime brought about the preparation of a party for underprivileged children which proved to be a success. It also put an end to the suspense centered on the joke gifts under the tree. Another suc- cess of the season was the carol sing at Vuley Nursing Home in Brookline. Edmund Hall reciprocated Florence Hall ' s Hallowe ' en party in the beginning of February by giving a start-the-semester-off-right party. February 11, Edmund Hall had a buffet supper and dance using Valentine ' s Day as its theme. Late in the Spring, Edmund had its own party as a sort of farewell to the departing seniors. These are but a few of the many things Edmund Hall has done during the year. FLORENCE HALL Front Ron: Linda Karkane, Sally Lehr, Marie Lincoln, Diane Scussell. Second Row: Marcia Nichols, Social Chairman; Patricia Rogers, Secretary; Mary Czuckrey, President; Betsy Ryder, Treasurer. We ' ve had a very exciting time in Florence Hall this year! In the fall we held a party to which we invited boys from Boston College and Northeastern. Everyone had fun dancing, playing cards, or just chatting. To celebrate Hallowe ' en, we decorated our dining room with witches and black cats, hung apples from strings, filled tubs with water and apples, popped corn and in- vited Edmund Hall over to help us keep the goblins from our door. It is our custom at Christmas to help bring the spirit of the season to the aged pa- tients of the Boston Nursing Home. This year we filled baskets with fruit for each pa- tient, but because of the great snowstorm we were unable to deliver them in person and sing carols as usual. However, we did send the baskets by cab. In January, we tried a new party idea. Four of our girls invited their dates to enjoy a dinner which they prepared themselves. It was a grand success. After dinner the cou- ples spent the evening dancing to records and chatting. Several girls since have had a small party and find it works out very well. To top off our year at Fisher, we have a dorm picnic at Nantasket Beach in the latter part of May. Hot dogs, hamburgers and chips are the specialty. If it is warm, we go swimming. If not, the park is always fun. All in all, this year has been very eventful and exciting. MYRON HALL Front Row: Marcia Shiro, Karsen Faulkner, Sue Curtis, Dotty Kaiser, Barbara Gentile. Second Roiv: Bar- bara Maynard, Secretary; Joan Knapp, House Council; Betty Brown, House Council; Diana Graves, Presi- dent; Miss McNevin, House Director; Donna Torno, Treasurer; Judy Wilcox, House Council; Sarah Dunbar, House Council; Jackie Guzzardo, Social Chairman. Third Row: Paula Segal, Sally Brown, Linda Giles, Phyllis Ginty, Linda Asunmaa, Beverly Cleathero, Geraldine Osborn, Pat Barbour, Mary Lou Moy- nahan. Fourth Row: Amy Badger, Linda Marold, Diana Ricciardi, Sharon Turnbull, Elizabeth Steeves, Betsy Amenta, Donna Caldara, Judy Cronig, Karen Reida, Sandra Jackson. Myron Hall is Fisher ' s newest dorm. When we first came as juniors, the hall was just being completed. How excited we were to be the first to move in! Everything was so new and beautiful that we had a certain proudness in us right from the beginning. As juniors, we participated in the dedication of our dormitory which consisted of the President ' s speech and a tea. For two years, with the help of Miss McNevin, our House Director, we put on a Christmas party for underprivileged children. Plans and preparations each year were made weeks in ad- vance and both parties turned out as we expected, a huge success. The Christmas spirit was really catching then, and just before our vacation, we joined forces with an M. I. T. fraternity and went Christmas caroling. After that, we had our dorm party. The gag gifts and our Santa Clause really made it a lot of fun. During semester break of ' 60, many things were going on. Some of the girls went on a ski trip to Stowe, Vermont, and enjoyed one of New England ' s favorite winter sports. During May there was a little excitement in the dorm — a window was broken — but when Miss McNevin went to investigate it, she found a surprise birthday party waiting for her. It was just a token of our appreciation for all the wonderful times we have had at Myron Hall. During the end of May, the dorm had a bea ch party in Marlboro. Everyone had a wonderful time and realized that we would never forget the fun of swimming, skiing and the other enjoy- able things we did. Consequently, another beach party is planned for this year. In a way, it will be sad because it will be the last activity of doing things together, but we will always remember our college life at Myron Hall. Third Row: Barbara Sloan, Barbara Duncan, Lois Silton, Pat Romprey, Marily Bacon, Helen Omer, Judy Neylon, Beth McClusky, Carolyn Winsten, Judy Villa, Dena Ginsburg, Donna DeHaven. Sarah Mortimer Hall will always bring back fond memories for seventeen girls, class of 1961. It was our home-away-from-home for two years and represents many happy moments and the be- ginning of lasting friendships. We had many activities organized by our social chairman but among our favorites were the Children ' s Christmas Party, our Buffet Supper Dance, and our Spring Picnic. It was always fun too, to throw a surprise engagement shower for a lucky bride-to-be. The unsuspecting girl was lured downstairs by an invented phone call, usually in pincurls or dripping wet from the shower. Along with group activities there of course were dates with students from the many other colleges in Boston. The telephone was a very important part of this social life; it was busy con- stantly, and many of us held our breaths and listened for the code of the buzzer. The dorm was also our haven for studying; social life was not our prime concern. Remember our study hours? Some nights two hours was too short and our homework seemed endless, other nights those two hours seemed an eternity. We all realized though that these study hours were beneficial and were glad they were part of dorm life. Mail call, ironing, Whist games, fire drills, curfews, theme papers, nylons, nightly pincurls, pickup suppers, and too much soap in the wash ing machine were all part of our dorm life and synonymous with those years. These will fade in our memories though and leave more room for new happinesses. Never though will we forget our friends we made here or our house mother who was our guiding light. We wouldn ' t trade these years for anything. SOCIAL 1 o Ne; ; r ' rrr — m EVENTS sher i ° J Colonial Th V W1W1 THEATERS I ' wtAB Starting Fcbru.tr.
