PRESIDENT ' S MESSAGE Through all of the last eighteen to twenty years you have been active in build- ing your future — your parents have nur- tured you, schooled you, instilled in you ideas and ideals; you have grown through adolescence and come to your young adult- hood. Now you believe and we believe that you are ready to undertake all the exciting projects you have been anticipating these many years — to be on your own, to try and fail, or try and succeed — to make your choices and decisions and be fully respon- sible for them; to select your field of ser- vice, and even the location for the expres- sion of your abilities. Since last I wrote to the class of 1958 the tempo of life has not decreased. Rather, it has increased. While you have been attending col- lege: We have been through a mild reces- sion, which has caused many with limited preparation to have been unemployed. Jet travel has been established by our commercial airlines, thus cutting nearly in half the travel time from one side of our KJI continent to the other. (..-.r Min i cicucd n c ri w Animals have been projected hundreds SANFORD L. FISHER B.S., Ed. M. of miles into space. President satellite has traveled far beyond the moon, well into outer space. Already plans are being made that will permit man himself to travel — who knows where. All these indicate that civilization is on the move — that great events are happening in rapid succession. The pace is increasing. All this calls for you to be more prepared and more alert if you are to be more than an observer. However, in your effort to keep pace, may I suggest that you keep your feet planted and your memory fresh, regarding the ancient landmarks or contributions which were made by your fathers and forefathers. It has been said that a dog, carrying a bone in his mouth, stopped on a bridge and there observed a better bone than the one he possessed. Reaching for the reflection in the water, he lost them both. You are the custodians of all the good of the past and the present, as well as the architects of that which you wish the future to be. Build upon the best tradition you know. You are brave, you are competent, you are ready. Best wishes! Now you are ready for the world. You are ready now for the test. You are now ready (you can wait no longer) to make those decisions that will succeed or fail. This is a frighten- ing moment. It is also a glorious moment. Every college president says to his graduates, You are going out into the world and though the phrase may sound perfunctory, even hackneyed, it never sounds that way to a college president. He means it — he has kept the world in his mind when arranging for the courses and the training and the years of preparation when your mind and your life have been in his keeping. He knows something of that world and he knows something of you, and having done, in earnestness and hope, what his responsibilities required, he sends you forth into the world that you are prepared for. And what a world it is! Every part of it within speaking distance of every other part; every foreign country no longer inhabited by aliens but by other human beings, also within speak- ing and understanding reach; everything new and ready to your hand and heart. The world is old, too, and has brought from the past many good things. These are yours, too — truth, diligence, good-will — all necessary and useful in every generation. But each generation finds a new world and you, like Columbus, have yet no conception of the splendid things you have before you in this new world.

MESSAGES In the future we shall look back upon these two wonderful years at Fisher Junior College as a delightful part of our lives. Since we have received our de- gree, we may thin k that our education has terminated; we must, however, ac- knowledge that education is a lifetime process and has only just begun. The College has laid before us the entire stock of its knowledge and the vast and varied experience of its teachers; that we should grasp at least some of this knowl- edge is Fisher Junior College ' s objective. We, the class of 1959, most sincerely urge the classes following us to take full advantage of the myriad educational opportunities and facilities available at Fisher. We want to extend to every underclassman the very best wishes for a happy and fruitful college career. Brenda S. Monroe President of Class It would take more than these pages of the Beacon to capture the many, many memorable events that have taken place in the short period of our life spent at Fisher. This yearbook will serve to stimulate our memory, and will be a symbol of the trials and tribulations of our education. We have shared many happy and difficult days; let us not forget these. Cherish and keep this book. In the years to come, it will be a source of great joy to look back on the many friends made, the knowledge attained, and the administration whom we have learned to respect. My sincere and deep appreciation to all those who have helped to make this yearbook possible. And herein we write the final chapter to many of our happiest days. Maureen J. Wright Editor of Beacon
