3 5620 50557542 7 I THE 1958 3 e a c 0 n FISHER JUNIOR COLLEGE BOSTON MASSACHUSETTS President ' s Message It was no small step taken by you, or many of you, to leave your homes in small- er cities and towns and come to the larger city — Boston. Yet, it was a step forward, for it called for the making of new friends, establishing yourself in a new environment, and arriving at decisions which were your  very own. In this same way, after your sojourn at Fisher, you are ready for yet another step — into a much more exciting, daring, and SANFORD L. FISHER B.S., Ed.M. venturesome world. Change will be breath- President taking, the sands of time will ebb and flow more than twice in twenty-four hours. Every minute in every day will be more important to you. At the same time, with so many more opportunities, wise choices will prove more rewarding, even though a balanced and stable life will be more difficult to attain. So, you leave Fisher, not alone as a graduate, but, through months of serious preparation, a more creative force, a power for good, with abilities resident within you which call out for fulfillment. Thus you now are called upon to match your knowl- edge, talents, and skills against the requirements of your new day. The plans for the future are staggering. In your lifetime there will be more miracu- lous changes than in all the recorded history of this country. Social and economic changes will challenge you to keep up with them. Science will be ready to take you into outer space. Sidney, Australia and Calcutta, India will be less than thirty minutes away by the latest means of travel. More people from distant lands will share their cultures with you. You will be called upon to appreciate, understand, and enjoy a NEW relationship with a much wider and complicated universe. May I remind you, however, that there is another side which must not be over- looked — YOU. To date this has been an interesting life. It should continue to be just that. It will if you do not forget or lose sight of your immediate individual goals. Cultural interest and hobbies bring satisfying rewards. From day to day in your work- a-day life strive to improve personal, social, and business assets and through achieve- ment and quality performance, to grow in stature and recognition. Not only I, but every member of the faculty and staff wish you fullness in this growth and a rich and rewarding life. FACULTY JOSEPH J. CARTY, LL.B. Treasurer MYRON C. FISHER, JR., B.S. in Ed. To the school, we leave behind us We will pledge a love that ' s true; With a tear and a cheer for Fisher — Alma Mater, we love you. CLASS HISTORY 1956-1957 This is an authentic case, a factual account of the events which led to the day in question, June 7, 1958. The names and dates hove not been altered. The events are related as they actually happened. It all began on September 21, 1956. On that day, many lives took a new course. Approximately 175 students, soon to be recognized as Fisher Girls, mounted the now familiar five steps at 1 1 8 Beacon Street for the first time. During that first day, many misplaced juniors were rescued from confusion and guided to their classes by understanding and experienced seniors. Two days later Mr. and Mrs. Sanford welcomed these new students to the college at an informal tea and reception in the ballroom. This was the first time the Class of 1958 met the entire administration and faculty. Classes were dismissed at two o ' clock one day during the following week. In a colorful orray of Bermuda shorts, slacks, kneesocks, and crew necks, busloads of singing, chattering girls were deported to Cedar Hill for a day of sports, dancing, and all you can eat. A chilly Saturday in October allowed many girls to acquaint themselves with the historic points of interest in Boston. Another tour, this time for the Home Residence girls, was conducted through the downtown shopping district. Also in October, the dormitories held their first buffet suppers of the year for boys from neighboring col- leges. Gaily decorated halls announced to all that campaigning for class elections was in progress. As a result of these elections, the following class officers were inaugurated: President, Elaine Tsirakis; Vice-President, Judith Robertson; Secretary, Judith Rogers; Treasurer, Nancy Spargo. In November, the fall dance was held at the Hotel Vendome. Happy hours were spent tripping the light fantastic. Thanksgiving recess was a welcome break; and later on December 6, dads were the guests of their daughters for an evening of mock classes and entertainment. The Christmas season was ushered in with a gay round of dorm and commuter parties. January saw an atmosphere of heightened activity dominated by intensive study- ing for mid-year examinations. During February, such social events as the Ice Capades, the Sweetheart semi- formal at the Hotel Statler, and the ski weekend in New Hampshire filled a short but enjoyable month. The annual Junior Mothers ' Tea occurred on March 15. Mothers were greeted by their daughters ' instructors, and after being served refreshments, the mothers were entertained in the Ballroom. Spring vacation allowed a week in Bermuda, highlighted by sun bathing and Calypso music. A warm April evening provided the setting for the Junior Prom. Decorations adorned the Ballroom, and a small orchestra furnished the music for dancing. A fashion shov for incoming juniors and their mothers was held in May at the New England Mutual Hall. The girls were given an inside view of what type of cloth- ing constitutes the Fisher girl ' s wardrobe. The galaxy of summer activities during May included dorm outings at various beaches, a Red Sox baseball game at Fenway Park, and a concert by the Boston Pops Orchestra at Symphony Hall. To the juniors, June meant finals, leaving deep-rooted friendships, and the long- awaited advent of summer. 1957-1958 After re-establishing old friendships and forming new ones, those self-same girls of last year faced a new challenge — their senior year at Fisher. They soon were readjusted and were busy with the many activities of school life. New elections were held in November. Ambitious posters proved successful for the following: President, Mary Sue Curran; Vice-President, Ann Norton; Secretary, Joan Forte; and Treasurer, Betty Bartlett. The events of the year were much the same as the past year ' s, but each event brought new experience. From the classroom, too, came experience — the usual agonies of office machines, the perpetual pushing toward the next higher level of dictation, the important job interviews, and the final examinations. Thus the Class of 1958 had prepared for that day in question: June 7, 1958 — Graduation. This day was the culmination of a wonderful, never to-be-forgotten Senior Week which in- cluded — the outing at the beach, the banquet, and the Prom. At Commencement the class received its reward for two years of effort — valiant effort, and a great reward. SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS President, Mary Sue Curran; Vice-President, Ann Norton; Secretary, Joan Forte; Treasurer, Betty Bortletf. JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS President, Penuel MocLean; Vice-President, Claire Taber; Secretary, Brendo Monroe; Treasurer, Frances Wiencek. STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION Row ?. C. Afwood, B. Staretz. The Student Government Association is the connecting link between the faculty and the student body. With their advisor, Mrs. Gidanski, they help with school policies and disciplinary problems; for example, at every lunch period you ' ll find one of the SGA girls trying to direct the traffic in the Cafeteria. To raise their funds, the girls print Christmas address books and sell them to the students. In addition, they charge for returning lost articles found by the Association. The activities of the Student Government Association this year consisted of con- ducting the United Fund Campaign, presenting a very successful Fall Dance at the Parker House, and awarding a $100 scholarship to a junior. This year ' s Association has originated a Big-Sister Counsel, which provides each incoming junior to Fisher with a big sister in the Senior Class who will act as a social and academic counselor. She helped us create a home among ourselves here at 181 Beacon Street. We shall always remember her for her guidance and under- standing. Our activities at Andrew made an important mark in our lives. We learned to live and share with strangers who soon became our best friends. There certainly couldn ' t have been a happier group under one roof! Often our studying and duties were set aside for social functions, many of which were held in our own home — buffet suppers and dances with men from nearby colleges. Every girl played an important part in the running of Andrew Hall. If it had not been for the cooperation of each girl with the house council and House Mother, we would not have had a dormitory of which we could be proud. We hope it will make a home for every girl who comes to live here as it did for us. EDMUND HALL Row 7: S. Dobie, N. Pierce, A. Hulchlns, J- Moody, P. Mango, M. Suprenant. Row 2 Mrs. Cook, B. Mrs. Cook, our House Mother, and thirty-two girls lived here from September until June. We had two buffet suppers in the fall, and at Christmas time we gave a small party for orphan children. We also had our own Christmas party and gave joke gifts with humorous poems attached. The Come As You Are parties were attended by ail, as we sat in our pajamas eating, laughing, and singing together. Our years at Fisher have gone by too swiftly, but we shall always remember these happy experiences. We sincerely thank our House Mother for her patience and guidance and wish the best of luck to future residents of Edmund Hall. FLORENCE HALL Row I N. Powers, D. Zivillica, M. Wright, A. It is the oldest of the four dormitories owned by Fisher Junior College. This year thirty-five girls lived here with House Mother, Mrs. Miller. During the year we planned varied activities for the girls. First we had Initiation Week. Then we invited boys from nearby colleges to attend our buffet suppers. We followed this with o Come As You Are party with Edmund Hall. In December you could feel anxiety mounting as you entered Florence Hall, for we v ere all eagerly awaiting the arrival of Christmas. Our dorm project was enter- taining at the Veterans ' Hospital in Jamaica Plain. We returned to the dorm to have our own Christmas party. We, the seniors at Florence Hall, wish to extend our thanks to the juniors for their cooperation in giving Florence Hall such a happy, family-like atmosphere this year. SARAH MORTIMER HALL Row ?: G. This year thirty-six girls, hailing from eight different states, lived with our House Mother, Mrs. Smith, and a faculty member, Mrs. Plante, in this pleasant five-story brick building. We shall always remember the good times we have shared at S. M. — our initiation, parties, and singing around the piano. Mrs. Smith has endeared herself to the hearts of all of the girls at Sarah Morti- mer Hall for her understanding help throughout the year. COMMUTERS ' CLUB OFFICERS: Presidenf: JANE KELLEY Vice-President: ISABELLA STEVENSON Secretary: RUTH BRYSON Treasurer: JUDITH JOHNSON The Commuters ' Club gives all commuting students an opportunity to become better acquainted with each other and to enjoy various functions such as plays, shows, and concerts as a group. Together with their advisor, Mrs. Judge, the commuters plan many projects for the year. This year the girls sold chances for the Fisher Junior College Captain ' s Chair in order to sponsor a scholarship for a junior commuter. At Christmas the Commuters ' Club engaged in charitable projects; they gave gifts to hospitals, orphanages, and other similar organizations and agreed to help a needy family by supplying them with Christmas dinner. HOME RESIDENCE CLUB Row I R. Ross Social Choirman-L. Hurley, President-J. Barclay, I. West, D. Huff. Row 2. N. Crafts, M. Langley, A. Howard, A. Raymond, V. Harriman, C. Jones. The Home Residence Club consists of all the girls who earn their board and room while attending college by helping a local family with household duties. In early October, the Home Residence girls held a shopping tour of Boston ' s leading stores. A supper at Filene ' s Colony Corner followed the shopping rush. Of course, the girls looked forward to the buffet suppers they gave in November and in the spring. Boys from M.I.T., Northeastern, and Bentley were invited to these suppers. After satisfying their appetites, everyone went to the Ballroom to enjoy dancing. FISHER FLASHES Row J. A. DeVivo, R. Bryson, M. O ' Brien, J. Nutlall, J. Johnlan, M. Donahue. Row 2: P. Downing, P. Casteline, B. Horting-Co-Editor, J. Gardner-Editor, Miss Slinchfield-Adviser, M. Wright-Co-Editor, A. Ma- rongi, N. Phillips. Without the Fisher Flashes, it would be very difficult for the girls to keep up on the latest happenings at school. After much scurrying and worrying, the girls are always able to meet their deadline and produce a well-written newspaper. Special credit is due to the advisor, Miss Evelyn Stinchfield, reporters, typists, and mimeographers. Of course, we shouldn ' t forget the assistance Round-Robin gave in putting the paper together. GLEE CLUB Every Monday afternoon the Glee Club can be heard rehearsing in the Ballroom under the direction of Mr. Harvey Davies. In September and October, we heard them practicing Bless This House, and Let All Things Now Living, which were presented at our Thanksgiving assembly. In December, )he long hours of those rehearsals were well rewarded by the splendid comments as the Christmas assembly was successfully presented. A spring concert was held with Wentworth institute to bring the year to an end. We have been proud of the Glee Club during the past two years. HARVEY E. DAVIES, A.B. DRAMATIC CLUB Row 1 L. Gosule, Adviser-Miss Newman, R. Ruff, A. Sutherland. Row 2. B. Elia, J. Furman, C. Russell, G. Coe, J. Dunn, J. Rent, A. Buczak. The members of the Dramatic Club provide entertainment for the various func- tions at Fisher throughout the school year. The programs of the Dramatic Club con- sist of discussions about stage techniques and plays and readings of plays. Under the capable direction of Miss Nancy Newman, a graduate student at Emerson College, Fisher students learn to distinguish between an exceptional play or a hit and one which is mediocre or a flop. The members become familiar with theatre terms and the behind-the-scenes events. During the year of 1956-1957, the Dramatic Club put on two amusing plays, one of which was presented at Dad and Daughter Night. A program of monologues for the entertainment of the mothers at the Junior Mother and Daughter Tec was enjoyed by both the audience and those students who participated in the program. For Dad and Daughter Night this year the Drama Club presented a one-act play, Florence Unlimited, which was a tremendous success. SPANISH CLUB Row J R. Ruff, Secretary -S. Watson, Vice-President-M. Though this rarely happens, the girls still enjoy the interesting speakers and movies they have on different phases of Spanish culture. The highlight of this year was dining at DuBarry ' s and attending a performance given by Jose Greco and Company.
