MRS. LAURA M. BARNES, A.B., LL.B. Proudly do we dedicate the Beacon to Mrs. Laura M. Barnes, respected member of the faculty of Fisher Junior College, in appre- ciation of her numerous services to the pupils and faculty of the College. We value her friendship in the role of Senior Advisor; we acknowledge her rare ability as a teacher; but most of all we respect her for her admirable character and ideals as exemplified in her leadership. The Senior Class of 1957 extends to her its best wishes for future happiness. 2

SANFORD L. FISHER, B.S., Ed. M. President Every president of every school who made a speech or wrote a letter to a gradu- ating class has said or thought, You are going out into the world. It is a common- place remark that one cannot avoid thinking; because like all commonplaces, it says only the literal, irreducible, and specific truth. The world, however, is going to be very much like the world in which you have been living all your lives; and certainly it will be much like the world of college which has offered you challenge and opportunity. What you remember of your days at Fisher Junior College is, like a profit and loss statement, a summary of assets and failures. The fact that you are going out into the world is proof that you have had more successes than failures. Into this bigger world, you bring the habits of success. Your assets are many and concrete; you know how to do SOMETHING. You may ask for and you will receive a fair wage for what you can do. You have many skills that you can apply to the world ' s work. You know something about how the human mind works; you understand some of the techniques of getting along with other people; you have learned a little of the history of mankind and what man has achieved. You have had some glimpses into the mysteries of medi- cine, science, and engineering. Perhaps your greatest asset is the one least tangible — you believe in self-discipline. If this were not true, you would never have learned to apply it, day after day, so that now you can typewrite at sixty words a minute. These are tools — sharp, ready, suitable tools. With them you can build a good and rewarding life. The world, like you, has liabilities: the constant threat of war, of economic disasters, of moral and religious disasters. But it has also assets: the con- stant advance made by dedicated men into the frontiers of medicine and technology; the relative freedom of speech and movement; the possibility of vast new sources of energy; the old but newly translated idea that all men are brothers. It is a good world; not easy, not to be won in a day, but a world worth going into. You have my very best wishes for that good life and my prayers that you will use your tools intelligently and with good will. 3
