Page 8 text:

Sanford L. Fisher, B.S., Ed.M. Have you ever flown over the countryside of our great nation and watched the pattern of the earth beneath you — the sand-trapped golf courses, lovely lakes, wooded sections of various size, cities here and there, and the patchwork quilt of brown and green farmlands? This changing beauty as it unfolds before you did not just happen by chance. Those great stretches of farmland which form the basket of our nation were once a vast wooded area. Man, because of need, through powers resident within himself, by physical effort, cleared small patches of land by cutting trees, burning stumps, and breaking sod so that plantings could be made and harvests gathered in. Today is no different — in principle. Though we read in magazines of secretarial trained men and women who today are presidents of banks, railroads, public utilities and nationally known department and specialty stores, these people have used the same per- sonal characteristics to build their vocation as did the farmer. The upward climb has been characterized by hard work, long hours, never giving up because of difficulty, interest in the job, seeing one ' s self as part of a team, and thinking in terms of executive or ad- ministrative means rather than one ' s own personal pleasure. Today has been our day at Fisher Junior College for we have shared with you the best that experience has taught us — both in the classroom and in extra-curricular activ- ities. But tomorrow is all yours — parents and teachers stand aside. You are now on your very own — with the privilege of duplicating and extending that which has been achieved in the past; or perhaps venturing into completely new and unchartered fields. But in any event it will be the touch of your hand and your mind rather than ours. Some of you will be satisfied with the status quo; others with mediocrity; but here and there a few of you will combine ideals and ideas with work to prove that today ' s and tomorrow ' s opportunities and privileges are as good as or better than yesterday ' s. So from these touring years of experience I will challenge you to better yourselves con- stantly in attitude and adventure. Seek out avenues of service, use these as stepping stones, keep your mind open, and never stop learning. This attitude will make it possible for you to leave a mark high enough on the wall of time to make you and those who know you proud. 4
