CLASS SONG β 1951 To thee our Alma Mater, We raise our voice in song; To praise tby name and spread thy fame, In chorus loud and strong. We now must leave thy hallowed halls, The world without we ' ll face; But lessons learned in hearts are burned, They ' ll live and grow a-pace. As through the years we travel on, Our goal will ever he; To work and strive to keep alive, The ideals taught by thee. So, once again we stand and pledge, Our debt of thanks to you; And through the years our hearts will turn, To FISHER, we ' ll be true. β Sylvia Greenlaw Men ' s School Joseph J. Carty, Treasurer Roberta C. Macdonald, Dean of Inst ruction Miss Lucy Vignone Dedication To you, Miss Lucy Vignone, we, the class of 1951, dedicate our Memory Book. It would certainly be impossible for us to put in writing our appreciation for your help and inspiration day after day. May we extend our humble thanks and very best wishes for your future. And finally, we leave our sincere gratitude for the guidance and inspiration given us in the past two years; and we hope that we may prove we can pay dividends equal to the investment of patience, toil, and under- standing which was spent in our behalf. WE HEREBY APPOINT Albert and Flea-flea as co-executors, and in witness thereof, we here- to set our trembling hand and noble seal to this our First Will and Testament, on this the eighth day of June, nineteen hundred and fifty-one. Witnesses: SIGNED: MISS UNDERSTAND MISS TAKE JEAN HOGARTH Our Story Probably the quietest day in the life of the Class of 1951 at Fisher was the day we began our careers here! Mr. Sanford, Mr. Myron, and Miss Macdonald discussed our classes and the various clubs and group ac- tivities which were open to us. As we gazed about the beautiful Greek Ballroom we all wondered just what it was going to be like and how well we would like it. Then be- gan the ever-present nightmare of typing, which for many of us was a completely new and alien subject. But as you can see, we did survive β much to the surprise of many of us and our teachers. Early in October we held a special as- sembly to elect our class officers, for what can a class do without officers? After stir- ring campaign speeches the following were elected : President Judy Brown Vice President Nyla Stowe Secretary .... Muriel Murray Treasurer DOROTHY SCHACHT Late in October Alpha Iota sorority sponsored the Halloween Pumpkin Ball and we were all proud and pleased when our lovely redheaded classmate, Gwen Davis, was crowned Queen. The following month the school treat- ed us to an informal dance at the Hotel Sheraton. This was the first look most of us got at the Fisher men up the street! Throughout November we in Glee Club practiced long and hard for the an- nual Christmas Convocation which we pre- sented at John Hancock Hall just before going home for the Christmas vacation. It was a night never to be forgotten, full of the spirit of Christmas. After vacation those of us who had not spent enough time on our studies began to envy the ones who had, because both soror- ities sent out bids to those who deserved them. The first week in March was hazing, when the neophytes had to dress up in the most outlandish costumes and bow to every wish of the sisters β we carried books, man- uevered stairs on our knees, learned the Greek alphabet and pushed life savers the length of the cafeteria floor with our noses β to mention a few of our penalties. But we loved it and decided that belonging to a sorority was well worth the entrance fee. In the meantime we were peeking in on rehearsals of Our Hearts Were Young and Gay which was presented by the Dra- matic Club later that month. St. Patrick ' s Day fell on Friday last year and though of course we all dearly loved shorthand, about 25 of us in Mrs. Hurley ' s class went AWOL that day to fol- low the most Irish of our number to South Boston to see the parade. Thank you, Mrs. Hurley, for being so understanding about it. It was also about that time that Seniors began to wonder if we were crazy when they kept hearing us talk about Albert and Flea Flea, but we told them that we weren ' t really. They just couldn ' t see our little friends because they were Seniors. But I think they still wondered. Monday, April 17, marked the begin- ning of our Junior Week and the sun shone brightly, just for us. That morning we held a special assembly to properly begin the week, and we were all presented red roses from our Senior sisters. Then Joan Keller amazed us no end with her magic and sev- eral other members of the class performed musical selections. The next day we enter- tained our mothers at tea with music by the Glee Club and delightful little sandwiches and cakes. This was the first time most of us had helped put on a tea, but we got along famously with the able assistance of Mrs. Cornell. Then on Friday night we had our never-to-be-forgotten Junior Prom, at which Phyllis Rapa was crowned Queen. As we moved up and down the marble staircase in our long gowns we were more glad than ever that we had come to Fisher. May passed more or less quietly but we spent a lot of time walking on the Esplanade and watching the boats on the river. When Shirley May France made her epic attempt to swim the English Channel we cheered as a boy from a Boston college swam the Charles, coated with Crisco. Friday of the first week in June we took part in the Class Day exercises of the Class of 1950 as ushers and members of the Daisy Chain. Although everyone present was broiled by the early summer sun, we enjoyed the program put on by the gradu- ating class in the Hatch Memorial Shell. After the program we said our good- byes, promising to write and keep cur friends posted on our activities and fun dur- ing the summer, even then anxious for fall to come when we would all be together again. 1950-51 September 19 of the following autumn was like old home day, as we rushed to greet our old friends and catch up on new inter- ests, summer jobs, and the latest gossip. What a difference from the previous year when we were all so alone and shy. We also welcomed the Finishing Secretarial and Stenographic sections, who arrived for their one-year courses and would be part of our graduating class. When the time for class election came three of last year ' s officers were again vic- torious and the final results were as follows: President Judy Brown Vice President Janet Bailey Secretary Muriel Murray Treasurer Dorothy Schacht Late in October Alpha Iota sorority presented its formal Pumpkin Ball in the Cambridge Boat Club and a pert senorita who had come all the way from Brazil to go to Fisher, Sonia da Cunha Bueno, was crowned queen. In November all the students of the Fisher School, both divisions, were invited to be the guests of the school at an informal dance at the Hotel Vendome and a large crowd attended. The Glee Club was par- ticularly busy during December β we re- corded a group of carols to be broadcast over Station WCOP, performed on Dick Tucker ' s television show, and presented a program of carols on historic Boston Com- mon as part of the city ' s large Christmas celebration. All this in addition to prepar- ing our regular Christmas Convocation which we again performed in the John Hancock Building. Swing your partners! This was the battle cry of Theta Alpha Chi sorority as it made plans for the Barn Dance which took place in an old barn on the Larz An- derson estate in Brookline early in Decem- ber. We all let our hair down and had a wonderful time. On February 10 Theta Alpha Chi was again in the spotlight when it sponsored the Cupid Caper in the Gold Ballroom. A decoration committee with imagination added red cupids and hearts to the classic Greek decor and we all agreed that Dor- othy Schacht made a beautiful Queen of Hearts. The girls in the same sorority will re- member the nights they attended Pops, a Braves-Dodgers ball game, and their won- derful week-end at Faith Penniman ' s house at the beach. During Junior Week we gave our lit- tle sisters red roses and helped them put on their Mothers ' Tea. Turn about is fair play and they gave us a helping hand on our Mothers ' Tea. About this time we began completing our requirements for graduation and some of us began to realize that we really might make it after all, for all our doubts. During May, even as we strove to do what we must in order to leave Fisher, we began to have our qualms and wonder if we honestly did want to leave. After all, we had had the opportunity of working and studying with some of the most intelligent and wonder- ful people in the world. And what lay ahead? If we could only know! Then as if by magic June was upon us. Exams. Just think, girls, these are the last exams we will ever have to take, as far as school is concerned. Thursday night we met on the Starlight Roof of the Hotel Shelton to have our class banquet, to which members of the Alumni were also invited. How good it was to see those familiar faces after they had spent a year in the world we were about to enter, and to discuss jobs and futures with them! Friday afternoon we had our Class Day exercises in New England Mutual Hall, which was gay and bright with flowers and the feeling of festivity that pervaded every heart. That night was our last formal dance at Fisher β our Senior Prom β that solemn though happy time in the life of every girl which marks the ending of an old life and the beginning of a new one. And on Sunday morning dawned the day toward which all our efforts for the past two years had been directed β GRAD- UATION! After we had received our diplomas we would be on our own. We were proud as we marched up in our blue gowns to accept our diplomas. All that we had put into these two years was worth it, and each of us promised herself to make very sure that she would always be a credit to Fisher. Many of us parted with tears in our eyes; but we all vowed to meet again β someday, somewhere. Student Activities Committee Seated: (Seniors) Janet Bailey, Vice President; Muriel Murray, Secretary; Judith Brown, President; Dorothy Schacht, Treasurer; Joan McParland, Senior Coun- cil Representative; Marcia Curley, Senior Council Representative (not in picture ) . Standing: (Juniors) Adele Byron, Secretary; Justine Nunan, Treasurer; Doreen Eastman, President; Dorothea Hayden, Junior Council Representative. STUDENT ACT Late last fall the Student Activities Committee was organized to act as a liason between the two classes and the administra- tion. The group consists of the eight class officers, plus one representative each from the Junior class and each of the one-year classes. Miss Macdonald represents the ad- ministration and Mrs. Hurley, the faculty. The main purpose was to iron out dif- ferences and misunderstandings and help each side to see the point of view of the other. Each month the representatives of each class had separate meetings and one joint meeting, with Miss Macdonald and Mrs. Hurley present at all. The Committee presented gripes of their classmates, as the best means toward their solution. iS COMMITTEE When it came time to think about Graduation and the many social activities surrounding it, each Senior member of the Committee was assigned an activity, of which she was to act as a kind of Chairman, ex-officio, in a supervisory and coordinating capacity. The girls worked with the gen- eral committees in seeing that the proper work was done and also worked with the faculty representative or committee, where such existed. Things seemed to work out fairly well and we hope that the plan will be contin- ued next year. It is a day when we seniors can be justly proud, for we have strived for this goal since the day we enter- ed Fisher. Most of us began our secretarial training two years ago, and some a year later; nevertheless, when we entered, Class Day and graduation seemed somewhere in the distant future β too far ahead to think about. It is unbelievable that the time has gone so quickly and that we are assembled together for the last time before graduation. As we glance back, we remember the day we entered Fisher, uncertain as to what was to be expected of us, yet eager to find our places. We remember the beauty and solemnity of the Christmas pageants, the inspiring music of the Glee Club, the rush- ing between classes, the strolls along the Charles, the din of the typing rooms, the chattering in the cafeteria. All these and many more are part of the life at Fisher; and they have come to mean much to us. We have many fond memories; memories that will remain with us in the coming years. Many valuable friendships have been formed; and these we hold dear, for we have worked together striving for the same goal and we have experienced the same feelings of uncertainty, discouragement, joy, and satisfaction. We must not look back; for it is the future that holds much in store for us. There will be golden opportunities; and because of our excellent training here at Fisher, we feel that we will make the most of these opportunities. Conquering the fu- ture will not be easy, especially in the un- certain world of today; but as always we must work diligently and faithfully so that we may deserve the best. We hope that we shall be worthy of the positions we are destined to fill. No matter how small the positions, all of us must feel that there is a place for us and that we will fit into the scheme of life. We feel justified for having spent this time at Fisher; we have acquired and per- fected those skills which will make us able to find our places in the business world of today. We look back upon the tasks re- quired of us that seemed endless and diffi- cult; yet how minute they appear now. We have worked hard, but we realize that all worthwhile accomplishments are brought about by the willingness and eagerness to put forth every effort. We hope that this Class Day will be a memorable one to each graduate, her par- ents, and friends. The expectant faces of the girls, the singing of the class song, and the Daisy Chain will make us remember this day and look back to it with happiness. As now we are about to leave, we wish to express our appreciation to our teachers, who have so willingly instructed us. We shall appreciate them even more when we are working and experiencing some of the things for which they have tried to prepare us. It is our wish that the Class of 1952 will carry on with as much interest as we and that they will make the most of their happy days here at this school. Our senior year has come to a close, and we hope that this class will be remembered as one of the finest that has ever graduated from Fisher. β Ruth Gordon
