Miss Shell, hedd of the Business De- pdrtment, remembered thot there wos o big controversy in ndming the school. i'So mdny wdnted it to stdy Virginid Bedch High. They were olso contem- pldting Oceond High School, but be- cduse the school wos on First Coloniol Rodd, they gdve it thot home. The one thing thot teochers most re- member dbout the opening ddys wds thot the building reolly wos not com- plete. Mr. Rountree remembered thot the frdmework of the ceilings were still showing. Though the workmen mingled in with the students, their tools did not, so people hdd to wolk over ond dround two-by-fours ond Tiles. Some of the hdlls were not even finished so students hdd to tdke the long wdy dround to closs. The rooms were still being pointed so for the first few months cldsses met in differ- ent rooms from week to week. Dr. Jdmes Mounie, the first prin- cipdl, sold this wos d good time to see whdt kind of teochers First Colonidl hdd. The English Depdrtment wos under- supplied, too, dl first. TTWGTG were no text- books for the students, only d chdlk- bodrd from which they constdntly copied notes. Mrs. Rodgers com- mented, lt wos ciuite d chdllenge: but l think chdllenges dre good becduse they bring out the best in good people. Remembering the opening ddys, Mr. Fishel, hedd of the PF. The building wdsn't totdlly finished - especidlly in the gym oreof' Becduse there were no doors in this sec- tion for the first few weeks, the PE. teochers did not hdve to cdrry their bun- dle of keys. Nothing could be locked up so dll of the new equipment wos stored in the metdl shop ored. From the bdck wdll of the school to the for fence wos just o Hplowed field, so dll PE, cldsses were held inside. Mr. Fishel odded, 'il think the students ddiusted very well to the opening. x 0 Another mdior problem during the first two months wds one thot the students fdced every doy. Becouse there were no lockers, they lugged stocks of books from closs to closs dll doy. Mrs. Ezell, then in eighth grdde, now d US. History tedcher here dt First Colonidl, sdid, l must hdve looked like d dorky eighth grdder stonding in the lunch line with my pldstic bookbogf' At the end of Octo- ber, lockers were finolly instdlled ond students were dble to unburden their wedk drms. Becduse of the uplowed fieId, dthletic prdctices were held dt Virginid Bedch Junior High ond the home field for footbdll wos dt Princess Anne High School.
